Generally the easier it is to communicate, the more... interesting people show their colors. XBL just has the unfortunate problem of having cheap, readily available mics and a younger average userbase.

I think I've only run into one douchebag while playing. I'm on PS3, though. My experience of playing within this community has been a pretty good one.

Never had it on PS3. Switch over and save on the multiplayer fee (I've never understood why Xbox players are ok with that).

Guy with a mic said "nice rocket". An me3 hooligan he was.

this. On xbox, I've dealt with one bad group. Apparently he didn't like that I was using a turian sentinel with a saber II. I switched to my phoenix vanguard, but by then I had two kick votes. When the low N7 in the lobby wouldn't vote to kick, he started screaming all sorts of obscenities. I didn't hear half of it cuz I didn't have my mic connected. Which was probably a good thing

Guilty. I usually scream massive obscenities into the mic, denouncing and degrading at searingly acidic levels of derogatory terms. But 99%of those times, I'm just chatting with my 4 yr old for being up so late, using the wrong color in her coloring books, or making errors in her Calculus homework. It's traditional for Asian households.

Usually I find most players with mics to be, if not friendly, then at least cooperative. Rarely, however, are they interesting - and for this reason I keeep 99% of players muted. However, late Saturday night I listened (heady with schadenfredue) while a guy on a mic was breaking up with his girlfriend, purportedly for spending too much time playing Xbox. That was pretty interesting.

I'm on pc and I've honestly had like 2 separate occasions where I had to deal with jerks.

One was a Russian teen who kept cussing at me for no reason and who played as a Kroguard. He sucked and left somewhere during the middle of the game. The other was a guy whom I completed a game with prior, in the next game I died very early in wave 11 so I couldn't help the team. And at extraction he accused me of leeching.  And he curtly told me to "GET OUT." Kinda lame, since I already proved myself in the previous game. 

But beside that I've surprisingly had mostly positive experiences, most people are polite, helpful, and cheery when they're on the mic. A lot of times nobody is talking except me, but later in the game they start talking too.

Well if he couldn't put down the controller for a break-up conversation, then she may have had a point.

I'm on the PS3. I have a very minor gay lisp, it's not really in your face or anything but you can definitely tell i'm gay.

I don't use a mic anymore, when things go south the first thing people do is shout homophobic slurs and say horrible things to me I won't repeat here. It's just easier that I stay silent.

You'll encounter idiots on every platform... it's the curse of the online game, as your not just playing by yourself with computer AI NPC's, but other people as well. If you encounter any abusive idiots, just disconnect your mic or leave the match.

A PC user, so I can't speak with actual experience, but I have to say that among the posters at BSN, the overwhelming majority of jack-asses, anti-social buffoons, morally depraved glitchers (and their apologists) or just plainly nasty people have been X-Box users.  

And...I thank my lucky stars that I don't have to cross paths with them ingame.  It's bad enough to read their self-absorbed drivel here in the forums, but to actually ruin my playtime by running into them on a regular basis during my games would probably be the deathknell for my enjoyment of this otherwise (mostly) spectacular game.
