The Champion of Kirkwall, after having acquired more money the old Amells ever possessed and buying a mansion in High Town will still let his old, frail uncle who sheltered and fed the Champion’s entire family in their hour of need, live in a bloody hut.
That’s just cold. Not even bonding over the loss of Leandra opened the doors of High Town for poor Gamlen.

Would Gamlen even want to join Hightown society? In any case, he may be in self-imposed punishment for stealing the Amell estate.

Gamlen had a fortune. Gamlen squandered it.

His circumstances are entirely his own problem.

Maybe not join the Hightown society but I think he would like to live in a place where there are no rats around and cheese doesn't sit in the same spot for over a year.

Well... recall that he wouldn't have needed to feed/shelter anyone if he hadn't stolen and then thrown away the estate.

Everyone makes mistakes.
Gamlen is still family and and he helped the Hawkes when they needed. Letting him rot in Lowtown while the Champion has a mansion all to himself; and possibly the LI; just sounds exceedingly cruel. I would have liked the option to invite him to move in after they bonded over Leandra's death.

Yeah, no. I'm not inviting my creepy, thieving uncle to move in with me because I suddenly have an extra room.

If I had been given the option, I would have done so. However, I have a feeling Gamlen refuses it out of pride or something.

On the subject of thievery, I think Gamlen's actions were understandable.
He did steal from his sister but it was his sister who decided to turn her back to her old family to get married. And it was Gamlen who remained on Kirkwall and helped their parents until they passed and still received nothing for the trouble.

We are all human, we all have our vices and we all makes mistakes. And I don't think Gamlen deserves to live in squalor for the rest of his life because of his.

I think Gamlen can freely go in and out Hawke mansion, but it poorly shown in the game.

Hawke can let Bodhan and Sandal live with her, why not Gamlen?

I don't feel Gamlen is totally bad, there will always be someone like him in a family.

In anyway, if not because of the Blight, Hawke and family will not going to Kirkwall and maybe forget about Kirkwall at all...even Leandra suggestion going to Kirkwall is protested because it is a city full of Templars...

I felt bad for Gamlen until I did his ACT 3 mission. Then I felt better for him.

While an invitation conversation would have been amusing to see, I do get the impression that Gamlen prefers to be on his own. Other folks on this thread have already provided some valid reasons for why he might prefer Lowtown over rubbing shoulders with Hightown nobility.

In the very least, I figured it this way - considering how many trips he might be making to the Blooming Rose, I doubt that he wants to be shuffling back to the Estate in the wee hours, smelling of booze and perfume, to find his niece/nephew leaning against the banister, waiting for him with an arched eyebrow and a smirk.

So he can pawn my stuff and blow it all on booze and ****s?

Yeah, no. Gamlen's a tool, he can rot.

...knowing my Hawke, she'd probably be at the Blooming Rose herself

Honestly, I really liked Gamlen. Great development from act 1 to act 3 and it's one of the only aspects about Hawke's "personal" storyline which I greatly enjoyed--the part where you two were the only family left and gained a (not very explored) bond.

I'd have loved to offer him a spot in the mansion, possibly reform his life--his issues with everything wrong in his life disappear over time as he mourns Leandra / gets to know her children and finally finds his daughter assuming you do that (great character development imo).

Hell, it's a shame the Amell mansion is abandoned post-DA2. I'd like to imagine my Viscount Hawke leaving it to Gamlen and Charade before leaving.

Posted Image  I think this pretty much says it for me.  I never exactly hated him for what he did, he did most of it to himself and owned up to it for that I can respect him for.  He seems to want to live on his own though, perhaps he feels guilty for what he's done in the past.  Though after his quest in act 3, I feel he's getting himself together, he just needed a push is all(better late than never)

Heh.  That assumes you aren't playing the kind of Hawke that will have stumbled in smelling of booze and perfume five minutes before Gamlen managed to.

Add my voice to those who assume that a small sense of pride keeps Gamlen from moving in with Hawke.  His shack in Lowtown might not be much, but it's his.  It's what he managed to hold onto himself on his own.  Plus it's convenient to the Hanged Man.

Nah, i'm cool. After finishing Charade quest I ALMOST forgave him. Until I loaded up a Isabela Romance save and heard about him making disgusting comments towards her. I found out later he makes stupid comments to you about all of your romances (but is actively gross towards Isabela)
You can rot in Lowtown forever, creep.

I agree about pride, or he wants to be alone, but it would have been nice to be able to invite him and he turn me down, as it is I feel I never offered and he didn't want to impose

I like Gamlen. I really wanted him to move in with my Hawke at the beginning of Act 2, before Leandra died.

Leandra would never have returned to Kirkwall if not for the blight so you can't really blame him for living at the estate and he made a mistake and payed for it (granted he payed for it with money/housing that wasn't his).

Poor guy :( I've never hated him.

Gamlen's my favorite Hawke family member. He's a deeply flawed and deeply human character. I'd have probably been more upset with Gamlen dying than Hawke's mother. Leandra just never got any character development and the twins were a bit cookie cutter as well (though I did like Carver).

I would have liked to have a chance to invite Gamlen to live in the mansion or at least an option to buy him a decent apartment. Not all my Hawkes would have done that but the option would have been nice.

In my headcanon, Hawke did invite Gamlen to live at the estate and was refused because Gamlen wanted to maintain his independence. It just happened offscreen.
