What does the Paladin get to make up for the severe deficiency of not being able to move or shoot while shielded?
Not able to move, yes, but retains directional control. You can also insta-dodge without having to suffer a shield-break animation.
I like the Paladin so far, but that shield has severe issues. For one thing, it has a very small area that it blocks off damage from, seemingly smaller than the actual shield dimensions. That Geth Hunter being able to shoot through it issue can be killer if there are two or more, making shielding in those situations rather pointless. It isn't limited to the Hunters: Pyros can reach around it with their flames.
There's no damage reduction while breaking the shield either, which means that you have to be intensely careful where you plant it and when you melee/use a skill. You'd think that when crowds draw closer, you could instantly melee them back and kill them, but no: aside from having a small, rather useless melee range when breaking the shield-plant, even if you kill the Pyro or the Hunter, their bullets usually manage to kill you at the same time. Its okay when dealing with rocket-troopers, centurians, Marauders, and so on. Assuming they ever get close enough. Really shines when you plant it against the fodder <_<
Basically, he seems to have issues in dealing with the Geth, but that isn't something limited to this class alone. He's pretty good against Cerberus (and absolutely beautiful when taking down Phantoms) and expectedly great against Reapers (in being able to block warps and tank multiple Ravager shots).
Cryo shield is just a gimmick: doesn't actually snap freeze more than 1 target most of the time (no doubt due to the ridiculously limited reach of the shield in the first place). Fire shield has its uses against bosses: spray a Brute with ice, dodge its charge, and meleeing it with your shield takes of a nice chunk of its armour.
Where the shield shines is when you synergize with a killer like the Fury or the Shadow: you take agro with the shield plant while they do the killing. Literally "taking it for the team". Also, they're great in a hack zone or protecting an activation/deactivation module. Where even on PUGs you have people to back you up.
Over all, that omni-shield seems more useful for the occasional shield-bash than actually planting; it seems to be less effective than its meant to be, so it needs a bug fix. If bugs aren't the issue, then it needs a buff.
