If you could change any non-story element(s) of ME1, what would it be?

I'm playing through ME1 again, and it's great.  There are some non-story things I'd love to be able to change, though:
  • Use ME2 and ME3's cover system, squad commands, and combat UI.
  • Have the gravity of each planet affect the Mako's handling.  We go to planets that have different gravitational strengths, don't we?  That should reflect in how the Mako handles, if for no other reason than for there to be a reason why it handles so badly sometimes.
  • More topical variety on the planets.  Rather than simply jagged mountains, how about some flora and streams?
  • Inventory menus and UI completely reworked to be more user-friendly and intuitive.  The following is a good read and points out a lot of the UI's shortcomings.gamedesignreviews.com/reviews/mass-effect-interface-fail/
  • Mission and Assignment tracking could use some re-wording to help better direct you when you don't know where to go.
That's all I can think of at the moment.  I'll add more as it comes to me.

What non-story element would you change in ME1?

I personally like the pretty much non-existent cover system of ME1 - third person shooting out of cover is fun. Squad commands and combat ui can be worked around using autohotkey to bind hotkeys to squadmate powers, though it's tricky. But yeah, the Mako thing would be nice, like the way pull lift can instakill enemies in low gravity.

I'll second everything but point 1. Having side-mission maps that look like they were created using an EKG machine just doesn't feel legit, and plays havoc with a Mako that seems to have the physical mass of styrofoam.

The inventory system is tedious and could be more efficient. By that I DO NOT mean dumbed down/removed altogether.

Otherwise I love this game. It does indeed feel like playing a 3D version of Starflight, a series I played to death in the late 80s/early 90s.

- ME3's combat system but mantaining out of cover combat, which returns to a some extent in ME3
- A combination of ME3 weapon management (but not ammo) with a more traditional inventory system.
- No recycled maps.
- Different physics on different planets
- Rebuild the wards, they seem dull an without a logical structure.

Actually, I would welcome a remake of ME1 with ME3 modernization. And Ashley's ME3 hair-do available for a Femshep.

I love ME 1 (warts and all) but the only thing that bugged me recently (just leveled to 60 and now almost done with ME 2 import) was the strange overabundance of shotguns and a few other weapons and the dearth armor. It's also odd how hard it is to get the better Onyx armor. Granted its not the best armor in the game, but it is the signature armor and my personal preference for Shepard. (I FINALLY found a suit of Onyx X heavy armor in my last playthrough). Also, unless the game starts to feature unique armor sets (like in KOTOR) ALL armor designs should be available to purchase at stores instead of being random.

Also, long after you've purchased master spectre gear and maxed out your credits, and even reach level 60, the game still offers random drops of significantly inferior equipment and mods.

I admit, I love the feel of ME1. Even cover (or lack there of...I don't know how many times I have finally gotten into cover, but I forget to "stand up straight" once the combat is done....HA!) doesn't bother me. Stacking items in the inventory I think is the only change I would love to have, but I would welcome the jungle flora/fauna that @Doug M posted, and the gravity idea as well....that could be fun!

@Zuzu Mumu - I am so for having Drells......soft spot for them....obviously (glances at sig... o.o) :D
