Hi,

I've seen several topics complaining about graphic artifacts (graphical distortions, multicolor objects appearing on the screen) when using nvidia geForce 8600 and 8800. I have a 8600 and I got the same problem.

I could not solve the problem, but find a way to keep playing.

First of all, I know that generally this kind of problem is related to overheating of the board. It is not my case. I can play other games without any problem and, I monitored the temperature of my graphic board and I could see that it stays in a accepted level of temperature. In fact, when playing DAO, the temperature is not even the higher of the ones I get when playing other games.

Well, to keep playing the game I:

- Installed the latest nvidia driver (195.62) which made the problem better (lower the rate of appearance) but not solved it;
- As soon the problem appears, I Alt+Tab the game, then Alt+Tab into the game again. The problem disappears.

I know it is not the best solution. And, if you are really getting heating problems, this will not be the best way to even try to solve it. But, to me, as I'm not having the heat problem, is the only way to keep playing the game.

For now, I only pray to EA build a patch to solve the problem. To me, it is clearly a incompatibility problem, if you are not getting heat problems, of course.

You aren't the first to mention using the "Minimize" trick, for this game, or any other; however, you should caution your readers about the JEALOUSY that many modern games exhibit with regard to Alt-Tab.

They really seem to hate losing the OS' Focus, and if you do not return it to the game fairly quickly, you will find that this game, and many other recent games, will ignore all attempts to "wake back up". It's totally out of touch somewhere in its own (virtual) LaLa Land. For "normal" minimizing purposes (as to pause for a check on email, or whatever), the best way is to go to the Saves / Exit menu first, give that screen time to load, and THEN you can safely Alt-Tab and stay away long enough to take care of whatever business might be needed.

That menu screen is not similarly "jealous" of losing the Focus, and will pop back up happily when you want it to do so.

Lastly, I do not think that you can blame the artifacting on anything other than nVIDIA's poor understanding of the new GPU architecture that ATI pioneered back in 2003, and nVIDIA only belatedly adopted two years ago, with the Geforce 8000 generation (their last complete card generational release).

Yeah, you're right, I forgot to mention that I always hit F5 to quick save, hit the space bar to pause the game, then do the Alt+tab.

Of course, this is a "trick" that I cannot assure that will always work properly. Use it at your own risk.

Good news!

I did what is said in this topic to try to get higher FPS:

http://social.biowar...58/index/460116

And, it appears that it solved the artifacts problem! I don´t know if are both related, but, I get more FPS (the game is smoother) and I´ve played for about 3 or 4 hours and no more artifacts!

I hope it really solved the problem.

Well I for one am going to try this, now if only it'd solve the CTD's I've been getting every 5 mins.

I have a save in ostagar, just after Duncan leaves you. I run across the bridge to the other side with all the tents and the game CTD everytime! However I have noticed alot of artifacts since updating from my 192 forceware to 195 and also noticed it's always the bloody 8800's that have the problems =/ time to change Graphics cards methinks....

Updating: it´s been some days that I don´t play it (I´m traveling, far from my PC :P) but last time I´ve played, the artifacts start to appear after several hours of gameplay, and I could "solve" it doing an "alt+tab". In other words, it still happens, but more rarely.
