This might be something everyone else knows but I did not I was under the impression that the collectors edition was the only version that came with 3 special times AND Shale the stone golem...However after speaking to a friend he said he bought the REGULAR edition and got Shale and dragon armour I am like what on earth???!!!

What is the point of the collectors edition as being in the UK already finding out that the US version is a far better deal that the ONLY benefit for us in the UK is that we get 3 weak items a helmet, staff and a book.

In my opinion in works out better including the stone golem in the collectors edition only because what is confusing is if you are going to throw that in with the regular version to then why on earth would you be charging 1200msp for it on the marketplace when you are giving it away with both versions anyways???

At least you should have given Wardens Keep with the collectors edition Bioware I had to buy that seperatly on the Xbox 360. So I paid an extra £15 for 3 boring items and a bonus disc full of useless stuff.

Look at collectors editions like Bioshock, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Forza 3 instead of giving is a cardboard sleeve and a disc which is useless oh and what is further more upsetting is that the so-called theme on the 360 bonus disc is for the PC only!!! Why?????

Shale was built as DLC from the start, I believe (there's little to no reference to him in the core package or single player module files). The reason its given to everyone who bought the game is essentially to milk money off people re-purchasing or pirating the game. Anyone who buys a used copy or pirates a copy will have to fork over cash in order to get the extra content. Anyone who buys the game 'legitimately' (nothing really wrong with buying a used copy, except Bioware/EA won't see a penny) will get that content for free.

So, what you do get for the Collector's Edition...is whatever extra you get in the Collector's Edition that you don't in the regular one. No idea what that is. A cloth map, DVD-Commentary and stuff? That's no different than any other Collector's Edition out there. Just because this is one of the few DLC games, doesn't mean they're going to change that formula over night. Collector's Editions are for people that want to fork over some extra cash for a little extra paraphenalia and show their love of the game.

Collectors edition gives you +3 to every stat there is on every character , the best helmet in the universe , and the best staff in the universe

I was pissed when I found out that I COULD have had all that stuff , IF I had known

I remember the days of the Collector's Edition boxes being HUGE. Those were the days.

There are still games that have rather large special editions.

Bioshock 2 is going to come with 164-page hardcover art book, three posters, the orchestral score on CD, and the orchestral score (of the first game) on a vinyl 180g LP

With the CE you start the game with a book that gives +3 stat points, same as a levelup. You then can use those 3 points to increase any stats you like.

Staff and helmet are nice, but not really the first thing I'd buy.

I never bother with collectors editions, in the past most of them just give you something like an extra T-shirt or an action figure (lol).

Primarily it's the tin case and the bonus disc with the videos, wallpapers, and soundtrack sampler. If it's a game I like, I'm a sucker for that kind of thing, but if you could care less about that stuff, then, honestly there's not much value-added content beyond that. The cloth map is typical of the ones that come in Bioware CEs--it looks cheap and poorly-made. The DLC, with the exception of a few inventory items, comes in the standard edition. So that just leaves the DVD and case--if you're a big Bioware nerd, that's probably enough; on the other hand, if you aren't. . . .

Most CEs aren't too impressive these days in my opinion. The only folks who really tend to put out CEs crammed with stuff are Blizzard and NCSoft (for the PC, at least). The original NWN had a really nice CE with a soundtrack, art book, and T-shirt (and it came in a massive box that could double as a maul, if you had such a need).

There are two reasons for this trend, I think. One is the overwhelming popularity of digital distribution. There's no point in making an expensive SKU that no one will buy because everyone's getting your game from Steam or Impulse or D2D. Very few brick-and-mortar stores (in the US) carry a large quantity of PC games for this reason (well, that and the console games are more profitable). Of course, the idea that brick-and-mortar stores frequently have a poor selection tends to feed back into digital distribution outlets, and ultimately I think that retail box sales are going to diminish to the point of near-nonexistence in the not-too-distant future.

In any case, the second reason is that DLC is being used here (as was pointed out above) as a disincentive for the secondary market (or the black market, for that matter). I believe, particularly because of the trend I mentioned earlier, this is going to become an increasingly popular alternative to traditional forms of DRM for companies wanting to focus not on protecting their product (which people are slowly starting to figure out will never really happen) to adding incentives for consumers who might otherwise turn to these markets to buy a copy themselves.

Agree with the OP, wardens keep should of been included. My major disappointment was the lack of a substantial manual, could of lived without the 'extra' stuff and just had wardens keep. Would of been cheaper at least - I feel ripped off.

Were you promised anything in the Collector's Edition that didn't make it in? Or did you just buy the Collector's Edition under the assumption that you would get a bunch of extra stuff and want to whine about the fact that all you got a bunch of paraphenalia you didn't want, but bought the Collector's Edition anyway, because you didn't even look at the description of what would be in the box in the first place?

Because unless its the former, I fail to see how you were ripped off.

some people dont seem to get it.

you dont really buy a collectors edition because you want free game items and content, because usually they will suck and not be worth paying double for.

you get it because you want the extra 'collectable' items, like the tin case, the map, the bonus dvd, and all that junk. if thats your thing then it will be worth the extra money.

if you dont want that junk, you will always feel ripped off buying a collectors edition.

i mean you really think getting 3 stat points on your character and some other really minor junk is worth paying double for? if you do, then you have more money than sense.

Indeed, and in this case imo it wasn't worth it. Most of the videos on the bonus dvd can be found on youtube though, and in just as excellent quality.
And then there's the soundtrack which has about half the songs you can buy from the album they released a few weeks ago or so.

While I think you're basically on target here, at least in the U.S., you're not paying double for the CE of this game. As with most CEs, it's $10 more than the standard edition price (except that a lot of retailers and digital distro outlets have had the SE on sale for about $39 recently, which would actually make it $20 cheaper than the CE).

I have to agree with the poster who commented about the manual. I like a big beefy manual and it would have been nice if the CE had included something that listed and described talents. For as many people as there are who say "RTFM" all the time, it's a shame that most games come with wafer-thin manuals or, worse still, inserts that say, "Go to the docs folder on your game disc to view the PDF manual."

I guess I understand why this is too, though. The trend seems to be moving in the direction of putting only the bare bones info needed to play in the actual game manual and all of the ancillary information that used to be in manuals in the fancy $25 - $35 strategy guides and deluxe or collector's edition strategy guides. Before Spore came out, I'd never heard of a "collector's edition" strategy guide.

I just want to point out that the UK does not get a tin and cloth map...Also I was reading today that Bioware or EA were saying Mass Effect 2 will be far better than Dragon Age beit that they are 2 different games but both RPG's before EA Bioware did tins so now I am wondering if Mass Effect 2 will come in a cardboard sleeve too <_<

Paid £39.99 for the UK collector's edition.

What did I receive?

The Game
A carboard sleeve over the box
The 3 In-Game Items
The Stone Prisoner
The Blood Dragon Armour

The basic game was £24.99.  I could have bought The Stone Prisoner for the same price and missed out on the in game items and the sleeve.  If the UK received the free 'Stone Prisoner' with every new purchase, I essentially paid £15 for 4 in game items.  Which is ridiculous.  I was originally under the impression the case would be tin, hence why I bought it.

To trump matters, GAME has the CE exclusively, thus I was forced to buy it from there.  A week after I purchased it they dropped the price by 50% .

Anyone able to confirm if the UK buyers of standard editions got 'The Stone Prisoner' for free???
