Shale was built as DLC from the start, I believe (there's little to no reference to him in the core package or single player module files).

No, Shale was cut from the game due to various concerns. When the PC release was delayed, they decided to try to get Shale back in. The delay was long enough that they were able to overcome the concerns/difficulties they had with it., but it was not done in time to be included on the disc itself.

Since BioWare did not want to charge people for cut content, it was decided to include it as a free DL for all newly purchsed copies of the game.

The rest of your statement about charging for it if you buy a used copy is spot on. (I don't tihnk it has anything to do with piracy, as the pirates will get it for free anyway).

@murry: I'm not sure about the international versions. It seems that for various reasons of which I am unaware, publishers produce different CEs for different markets. Sometimes (like with Assassin's Creed II, I think) the US gets the short end of the stick and sometimes the EU does. However, I can empathize with your irritation about the price cut. I paid full price for the US CE and I'm happy with it, but in two months it could be selling for $30. You never know. I got the CE of Red Alert 3 from my wife as a birthday present and within a few months that was selling all over the internet for $30 (which is less than half of the original price).

Well mine was s wooden box (EA Singapore), Stone Prisoner, Bergen's Honor, Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes, Final Reason, Blood Dragon Armor, Memory Band, Feral Wolf Charm, DVD Bonus and the stinky cloth map. $50.00 (US) My rant is they could have included warden's keep but they didn't.

What is infuriating is I have seen this pirated so fast I swear I could have flipped out and punch those jerks who cheated their way to obtaining DAO.

Bioware in all of its knowledge could have tied these CE items to the registration of the game's serial number before releasing them. This could limit the devaluation of the CE Edition.

Paid £39.99 for the UK collector's edition.

What did I receive?

The Game
A carboard sleeve over the box
The 3 In-Game Items
The Stone Prisoner
The Blood Dragon Armour

You should have also received a bonus DVD.

murrymonster wrote...

Anyone able to confirm if the UK buyers of standard editions got 'The Stone Prisoner' for free???

All new copies come with both The Stone Prisoner and the Blood Dragon
Armor for free. I live in the UK and bought the standard edition, but I also imported the CE and got the wooden box version with the cloth map.

I thought that was the case already. You mean the DLCs aren't tied to a registration? That's a bizarre setup; I thought even the NWN premium modules had that kind of DRM.

Sure they are.  You need to log in with your EA account once to verify that you're allowed to use each DLC that you install.  Then, you can use them offline.  But, I'd imagine that there's a variable in a file somewhere that says "this has been authenticated" and I'd imagine that the pirates just found a way to set that variable.  Let's be honest, here.  The only way to prevent game piracy is to use a system in which you must be online registed an account to each game key and then log in with that account to play (see World of Warcraft).  Obviously that's a horrible idea for singe-player games, though, and I wouldn't pay a single penny for such a game.

Also:  you guys got wooden boxes?  All I got was a lame tin box that's the same size as a normal DVD case!  Bah!

Cheers for clearing that up, you are also correct I did have the bonus disc.

Still it is somewhat alarming that the extra £15 was for a bonus DVD and three in game items, if as you say the standard game came with The Stone Prisoner & The Blood Dragon Armour.  I was under the impression from the 'GAME' website, that the standard edition did NOT come with those.  Otherwise I would not have bought the collector's edition.  It is really quite distressing to see people pay $50 for so much more...

Just to add.  GAME state that 'The Stone Prisoner' & 'The Blood Dragon Armour' are unique to the collector's edition.  False advertising???

The bonus disc is useless it says you get a free theme but wait you can ONLY get it by putting the disc in your PC! On top of that the soundtrack can only be accessed by putting it in the PC <_<

Bioware am going to be very weary of your Mass Effect 2 collectors edition just incase you decide to put all the stuff in the regular apart from a couple of poorish items and a bonus disc where you need to a PC to access the theme...

Sounds like it. I'm pretty sure it's been stated several times that any new DA:O game will contain a valid code for these two items.

Hm. I'm not sure what you mean by "theme." The DVD has wallpapers, which obviously can't be used with a console system. That seems a bit like me complaining about not being able to use the XBOX Live avatars that were just released because I'm using a computer.

As regards the soundtrack, I think the tracks are in MP3 format on the disc. I don't know enough about console systems to say whether those could be accessed through those devices in some other way.

Yep, you get everything except the physical product plus Warden's Keep. It's a matter of preference. Some people like getting and having a physical product, not just a download. Other people like getting all of their games via digital distribution outlets. It's a question of a) what you want and B) what you have access to.

The free Warden's Keep was meant to compensate for the lack of a cloth map and tin case/wooden box, and I guess also a mug for those whom received one.

Collectors edition gives you +3 to every stat there is on every character , the best helmet in the universe , and the best staff in the universe

I was pissed when I found out that I COULD have had all that stuff , IF I had known

Toolset ;)

I've made a helm that's essentially Bergen's Honour melded with the Helm of Honnleath and toned down a bit for balance.

And more importantly, it looks the business. :P

I usually buy collectors editions to support a company that I know make good games and to enjoy the extra stuff in the box.

Well after bying the DAO CE I will probably not buy another Bioware CE, at least not before checking what's inside. That poor printed map is more a kick-in-the-nuts then a nice present, the DVD won't play on my PC, so the only thing that's in for me is the soundtrack as mp3 and some wallpapers I don't like.

I ask myself ever since I finished that game, if Bioware knows what is going to happen if they continue to ****** off their fans like that.

Personally I would have bought the Collector's Edition, but they messed up over here in England by making it an Exclusive through GAME stores. Considering that GAME are generally the worst on the market when it comes to product knowledge and stocking levels (I should know, I used to work for them when I was a student) that pretty much stopped me from buying it. Ended up getting the standard edition instead.

For SE Asian countries, the Collector's Edition comprised of a wooden box, a cloth map, special content DVD, the free items, dragon blood armor and Shale DLC. It retails here for approx USD 60. I bought it for my collection, together with previous Bioware titles.

I think that companies should NOT charge money for in-game items, only for additional quests and locations. That being said, some quests apparently exist only to provide the player with new armor or weapons, because gameplay-wise they're worthless (Warden's Keep being a good example). However, there's at least a modicum of decency in that, as opposed to shamelessly selling people superior in-game items, like in some other games. I also hated it when Bioware included two additional merhants in Baldur's Gate 2, available only to owners of the bonus CD (without a mod, that is).
