How hard technically would this be to implement? Impossible due to the engine or possible but maybe not considered important?

Many gamers dogged DAO because the combat was like watching your character move through thick syrup, other thought the DA2 combat speed was a frenetic mess. I'm in the camp that though DA2 combat would have been ok at about 60% of its speed, but I bet the next person you ask will say I am wrong.

Why try to find that middle ground, why not just let us choose a combat speed that is comfortable? For example in DA2 things happened so fast is frustrated me, I had to constantly stop the action, wrangle my errant party, give orders.

Also I did like some of the flashy combat moves, I'd have loved to, at my whim to slow down the combat, just to watch my crazy ninja rogue flashing through the enemies doing his thing and enjoying the slo mo animations.

I know game devs groan when fans think sliders and check boxes can be made to cater to every players whims, but something like this, so core to making the combat enjoyable(and controllable)to a wide variety of players..............why can't adjustable combat speed be a feature? As I said, I'd use it for gameplay reasons, as well as just watching the great animations and spell effects unfold, just because I liked to see those things happen.

I've suggested a combat speed slider before. I haven't seen any feedback from the devs about it.

Action fans want it really fast, those who want to control the entire party without having to constantly pause want it slower.

I fully support having a speed setting.
I found the combat in both games too slow for my liking, so having a faster speed would be great.

I think BobSmith101 has suggested a FIFA-like speed slider. I could go for that.

Yep seems like a no brainer really when you get the sort of complaints you got with DA2. Works really well in FIFA so it's a tested concept.

I'd much prefer a better tactics system and more intuitive ai

Well you have two basic ways of playing which are both opposites.

Playing while controling the party would benifit from a slower pace since you have a higher workload. It would get rid of the pause-play-pause-play-pause play that you see in a lot of Youtube vids.
On the other side you have controlling the character while the AI takes care of the rest. You really don't need to pause much and that benifits from a faster pace.

I would love a game speed slider. I liked the speed that Origins had. Sure, it is slow, but it feels realistic and that is more important for me. In DA2 i had to pause every three seconds or so to issue commands due to the monsters being killed so fast.

This'd be great. I'd like things to go a bit faster than Origins (maybe 20% or so) but definitely slower than DA2. Like a rogue not attacking at a significant fraction of the speed of light, that'd be cool.

But the problem many had wasn't just the speed, it was the whole "Lolgravity" thing with the animations too.

You obviously didn't see the mage combat animation on a fully upgraded haste (I used the "super lots of skill upgrades" mod, so combat speed was around 100% faster).
THAT is the future.

[Edit] Seriously though, I would like to hear some developer's opinion about this; I think it'd be an interesting concept to adapt to DA.

This is something I'd like to see too.

The Total War games use a battle speed slider and it works perfectly. You can play those games at your pace. Granted, it's a strategy franchise but still.

Not sure I'd like a speed slider, but a speed between DA:O and DA2 would be something I'd favor going forward. You definitely need a speed whereby it's comfortable making and implementing tactical decisions for your party.

I also echo what Cstaf noted above that the slower pace of DA:O was more realistic, and realism remains an important part of the experience I look for in RPGs. The improbable combat animations of DA2 also figure into this realism quotient, and I'd like to see a return to less cartoonish animations.

I just want to mention that the animations in DA:O weren't exactly realistic either, no one would swing their sword around like a baseball bat like you do with the greatswords... Though, I get what you're saying, and I agree that Bioware should turn the speed down and introduce actual animations for using weapons, not just two stills and some sfx... Oh, and please no more roundhousing of the bombs.

I don't get it; I play both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II on Nightmare difficulty, and while they are both... interesting (wave combat in DAII and absolute fail nuclear missile-level overpoweredness of the mage in DA:O being my main complaints about each game respectively), I've never really seen much of a difference between the two, because I am constantly pausing the game to control party members effectively and synergize (more so in DA II, because in DA:O I just force field the tank and faceroll aoe mostly).

Am I playing it wrong or something? The combat in both games is strategic and fun (with a few caveats of course), but the game speed seems to be an incredibly small problem when you consider that you can pause the game at any point, effectively slowing the game down for you.

Not trying to rock the boat here, just seeking enlightenment.

Hmm, you don't? Swing a greatsword like that i mean. I have no idea how you would swing a greatsword but i never did consider it un-realistic enough for me to be bugged by it. The greatsword animation in DA2 did however.

Yeah I'm not sure how it would work or if it would work, but I've sometimes thought it would be cool to have on-demand bullet time in a party-based game as alternative way of controlling multiple characters instead of constant pausing.

Actually, I would like the combat to remain fast and I want to be able to control all of my companions from a single universal hotbar setup so I don't have to pause.

They could tone down the flashiness a bit, though.

And bring back the tactical cam.

And a pony.
