I'd have to say Unreal Tournament 3.  UT classic was amazing, UT 2003 was a giant step forward, and UT 2004 fixed issues with 2k3.  Then the abomination that was UT3 came out and showed us a craptastic Halo/Gears of War-ized version of FPS's that , sadly, is the norm nowadays.

The story was atrocious for UT3 but the game play was flawless. Yes, we know feel of the controls etc was different in comparison to the rest of the series and my god I hated the gravity change but hey ho stand alone it was solid. What I found most annoying was the differences between consoles. Have you ever tried a rocket launcher on PS3? Seriously, the auto-lock targeting on it is unbelievable, there is no map big enough that wouldn't let you stand at one end and lock on to something at the other. I have it both for PS3 and the entire series on PC. The main reason UT3 didn't take off wasn't because they tried to follow the trend at the time. It was because the community just weren't happy about adapting to the subtleties in the controls. On that note, if I play one, I have to spend a day getting my timings back for another. If this is top of your list, you haven't been playing many games then. I'd put hellgate way before I put UT3.

P.S. Does this make me a UT fanboy?

the following games were an EPIC FAIL
red alert 3 (compared to the other titles in the series and the franchise it is just pure filth, the worst by far)
empire total war (all talk and still a fail... M2TW was a good game but this was just trying to hard)
NFS Carbon (and all titles after)

these game were ok but still a fail
ES 4: Oblivion (morrowind was awesome, this was far to graphially oriantated and they still sucked)
NWN 2 and to some extent 1 (comapred to BG 1 and 2) although i havent use any mods

UT story has always sucked ass. That was not the point for the game whatsoever. Unreal maybe, Unreal Tournament? Not at all. I thought the actual game play of UT3 was really good, better then UT2004. I liked UT2003 a lot for its time, but I thought UT2004 messed up the weapon balance pretty bad. UT3 feels like it reestablished the balance for the weapons.

Man, don't mention NFS Carbon, i was eating here!   *pukes*

You know the problem with Oblivion? Too open, Too wide but without much content. And sincerely, given the graphic quality and the level of detail, it is much heavier than it's supposed to be on the system. (not well coded, i think)
At a first moment you are in awe: "OhhhhhhhBLIVION" the next day you are already fast-travelling  and in the third day you are... well... Bored.

Knights of the old republic 2.  The light side ending sucked.

UT3.  It lacked many of the options in UT 2004, which I feel is superior gameplaywise.

Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness.   That game was just awful.

TOEE was good IMO but it was kinda rushed and unfinished *sigh*

oblivion, fallout 3(oblivion with guns and fallout died a looong time ago)
MW2 (dumb AI, sentry gun enemies & named allies cant be hit lol i saw enemies shoot around them even on the highest level)
NWN 2 (not Storm of Zehir, that was very good but too short)
Lionheart (if it was like the old fallout then things would have been better instead of a click fest dungeon crawl one way street)
L4d 2 (its a L4D with mods, i wish they added more content like true zombie survival like barricading and food and limited ammo)
UFO afterlight (**** that was a down grade from its prequels UFO aftermath and aftershock, aftermath has good animations like shoot from cover and interesting research material and not being used in the equel, aftershock got nice and easily balanced level up system and class system and never got used again in the sequel. afterlight is just nothing but dirt... research complete! let me see the contents.. oh right nothing)
ha ha! ranting on video games lol
KOTOR (the games is good, but they should have gave me a scoundrel like jedi like in KOTOR 2, my scoundrel class became a lackluster, but i guess its game balance, we dont wanna one shot sneak attack the bosses do we lol)

edit: added KOTOR

Dawn of War II. The game is good and all, enjoyed the campaign (co-op anyways). The multiplayer just seemed to be lacking compared to the original Dawn of War. Its weird cause I like Company of Heroes and it plays mostly like it. I guess its more fast paced I guess, its hard to put my finger on the actual culprit.

Halo 3, all that hype and it was such a let down. I haven't touched the Halo franchise since.

Final Fantasy 8. It sticks in my mind as something I hated with a fire that burned but did not consume.

Hellgate London. Even though it said it was by "the makers of Diablo," I went into that game only expecting a Diablo clone to help hold me over until Diablo III. And because my expectations were so low, I actually enjoyed the game. Right up until the end, when it all went to s**t. There was this horrible giant robot sequence (the controls were craptastic, and you could easily kill all the enemies yourself, the quest just forced you to use the robot), the "ending battle" was almost non-existant, and the "final boss" ended with
Spoiler
. Overall a good experience if you stop before the last act.

I'm going to add Spore to this list (such hype and potential and it ended up being lame as hell) as well as Sacred 2 (I liked the first one)

If you think Pool of Radiance was bad, try playing Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.

Also, to Merin: I kind of liked Lionheart (though not enough to finish it)..but I had bought it having never heard of it like 5 years after it came out, so i had no expectations whatsoever.

Ruins of Myth Drannor was exactly the PoR I was speaking of.

The Gold Box game, Pool of Radiance, that's a classic that started a great series of games.

I wanted to like Lionheart.  The beginning was intriguing, but I never got very far and I think I tried like 3 or 4 times.

Ah, yes, how could I forget Deus Ex 2. After Deus Ex, I figured you'd really have to bomb it to make such a bad game. Boy, did they ever.

Wolfenstein. Boy did they f**k this one up. Return to Castle Wolfenstein as well as Wolfenstein Enemy Territory were such beauties , only to be followed by another COD console port clone that completely lacks anything that made the original so amazing.

Mass Effect and KotOR II.

ME because all the RPG elements - plot, (almost all)characters, setting severely lacked depth and just came off as characatures at times, K2 because it's just an unfinished mess.

Pool of Radiance 2 - I played through, but... i felt nothing...

Baldurs Gate 1 - I played BG2 first, so it was weak in comparison to that holyness!

Deus Ex 2 - Call it "Ex Deus Ex"... booooring!

Dungeon Siege - pity. Not recommended for potential Alcoholics ! *g

NWN 2 - maybe i didnt like it, because i played as a Drow Warlock, but the characters were "mild"

Lufia(for the GBA) - a shame it didnt even come close to the awesome Lufia II ...

I personally cannot list Baldur's Gate as a disappointment. I didn't have much expectation when I bought it. And I never finished it, but that was at a time where I bought more games than I played.

When I consider "disappointment" I weigh how excited I was for the game vs. how bad the game was. So high expectations and a mediocre product results in disappointment while no expectations and a bad product doesn't.

The Settlers: Heritage of Kings (Settlers 5): There are no words for this horrific thing they did to a classic series.

Monkey Island 4: The controls, oh the controls!

Spore: Although I kind of figured beforehand that the promises were just too good to be true (still bought it, stupid me!)

Gothic 3: Supposedly with the right mods it can be pretty good, but I never got into it.

Tomb Raider - Angel of Darkness: Yes, I liked the original TR games. And I even liked what AoD wanted to do. Only it failed miserably.

The biggest disappointment I ever encountered is definatly Neverwinter Nights 2.

Everything that made NWN1 great is missing, and the sounds and music from NWN1 was still there. As if I hadnt grow tired yet of those voice sets and music after hearing it 5 years.

They also promised horses, which would create some actual new gameplay. Then this was cancelled, and in the meanwhile NWN1 did receive horses through a patch.

Obsidian made the foolish mistake to work from the base NWN1 game without expansions and patches, taking pretty much all bugs from the unpatched original along for the ride.

The character models look hideous, attractive characters cant be made. The censorship is also rather extreme, bare hands and heads are all you see in this game, even bare arms is out of the question.

The campaign is terribly linear and forces all kinds of choices down your throat and does not allow you to create your own character at all. They name your mother, make you a peasant adopted by an elf, choose dumb friends for you, and the story conflicts with anything else than a young adult human because you are so often refered to as "boy" "girl" or some other way to indicate you are young.

Furthermore the choices are very black and white. you do something evil or something good, and a neutral way is often missing.

Area design is also quite terrible, Often too bright colors are used on NPC's which makes them look weird, and Shandra's farmhouse is huge on the inside and richly decorated, worthy of a wealthy noble family. A farmhouse shouldnt be the size of a mansion and definatly shouldnt be filled with the most expensive looking furniture.

And of course the other two components, Multiplayer and toolset are dramatic. You need walkmeshes to log into any module and often you need to register at their forum before you can get the walkmesh. It takes about 15 minutes or longer to log into a single server and thats a lot of time when you are looking around for an enjoyable server. In that time you can check past 10 nwn1 servers.

The toolset is very cluttered with all the screens, you would need two monitors to properly operate it. Its also functioning rather clumbsy compared to NWN1.

And all of this is just the tip of the iceberg, I could write a book about the faillure thats NWN2.

But theres more games I have been disappointed with. KOTOR2 of course because its not even finished, but theres more.

Mass Effect and Dragon Age.

Both great games without a doubt, but I do expect better from Bioware after NWN1,. Jade Empire and KOTOR. I didnt play Baldur's gate so cant judge that.

Both games lack their own identity and just feel like rather generic settings. Lack of armor and weapon models is also a problem, pretty much everything in the same category is a reskin, especially in Mass Effect. In Dragon Age its not with the weapons, but just as much wiht the armors.

For Mass Effect I did find all companions quite interesting though exept for Liara, I just felt that her voice acting was of lesser quality than that of the others.

With Dragon Age I find it quite difficult to find an interesting companion, Wynne is the only interesting one to me. She is elderly but its done in a very believable way and not the common stereotype.

All other companions just felt lacking. Sten talks too much for the strong silent type, Lelianna is way too naive compared to her background which destroys all believability of it, I cant even imagine Alistar being even considered for templar training, Zhevran is a stereotype homosexual, Morrigan is just some whining gothic girl that doesnt want to be happy, Oghren is funny but too much of a dwarven stereotype and Shale is a rather cheap replacement of HK-47.

Theres more games that disappointed me, but I only find those I had high expectations from worth mentioning. I have great respect for Bioware and maybe I do expect too much from them, but I just feel they could do better.

As for Obsidian, I wouldnt want them to ever touch a Bioware franchise again, I lost all faith in them. They should make their own games instead, that way people wont expect it to be of Bioware quality.

Now they just give Bioware a bad name because many people thing Bioware made the sequels as well.
