Sacrifice myself for this world? Not a chance. Gaider's point?

The human nobility is corrupt.

The dwarven social system is unjust.

The elves are a bitter and broken people.

Mages submit to a hypocritical church and live as its prisoners.

Why would you sacrifice yourself to preserve this status quo?

Hells, if you can't tear down these institutions, why not join up with the Archdemon and watch it all burn?  Or at the least head north to Orlais, let Ferelden fall, and force the Grey Wardens of Orlais to deal with the Blight?

Perhaps I'll make a mod called "Head North" that ends the game immediately following or perhaps even before the battle at Ostagar.  :-D

Perhaps Gaider's point is that it isn't worth sacrficing yourself and your friends/lovers for?  His characters who sacrifice moral principles or love for the sake of duty to kingdom or cause (Maric, Loghain, Rowan, others) live a life full of regret and pain.  Thoughts?

I'm nearing the end of the game and I have no motivation to sacrfice myself to save this world.  I've read that there are multiple endings including but not limited to self-sacrifice, so I'm hoping for a decent ending for my character.

I'm curious to know why (from a RP perspective) you might be willing to sac yourself, so feel free to share your thoughts on why I'm wrong and vile and evil.  ;-)

They will build an utopia with plenty of cake for everybody!

You're a Grey Warden.

It's what they do.

Because I love my family?

The darkspawn can not coexist with any other form of life. If they win, then they become the only life on Thedas (then presumably they die out due to a lack of broodmothers).

Except that the cake is a lie, the Archdemon has a monotonous machine-like voice and puts her minions through trials and tests involving portals.

Because Ferelden devoid of any life isn't something to look forward too? It is not like Orlais is any better with politics.

Read The Calling, the darkspawn do want to create utopia and live in peace. You're trying to stop them.

You're EVIL.

I wanted to join Ser Jory and escape Duncan and the Grey Wardens, so that doesn't function as motivation.

I read that so fast I thought you said incest not trials and test.

To the OP: I'm not sure. I don't think in any of my games I'll kill my PC. I don't find any "noble" ending in my death.

You don't have to be the one that strikes the final blow. You asked for a reason to explain why you would sacrifice yourself, I gave you one. If you kill the Arch Demon and you are a Grey Warden, you die.

Unless you bang Morrigan.

Funny, I thought archdemon was male. Anyone got a proof about her/his gender?

Well, for one character, she saw things quite similarly, and decided she simply didnt want to exist any more in such an f-d up world, and decided the archdemon was offering her a wonderful solution.

I don't think you are wrong or vile or evil, it could have made a valid option. Other games you do get the option of joining the darkside, but really, in this game, you've had to join the darkside so many times, that joining the archdemon would almost be like redemption compared to the choices you've had to make.

That's an incredibly narrow and selfish way of thinking. Our real world is no better than "barbaric" Ferelden. There's an ever-widening rift between the rich and poor, social injustices are as common as mosquitoes, terrible men lead nations, religious fanatics threaten our very existence... and yet, we don't submit. We don't lay down and give up. It's not our way, so why should it be any different for a Grey Warden? They do their duty because it must be done. Evil must be fought, and the innocent must be protected.

This just in: humanity sucks.

And that goes for elves, dwarves and whatever other not-human-but human races we can think up.

What would you prefer? A happy world of flowers and carebears and a smiling happy sun? Those don't exist. And never will. Yes, I'll sooner accept a world with dragons and magic and broodmothers than one where everybody gets along and nobody is disenfranchised.

That doesn't make it not worth saving however, and there are many reasons why each individual character may want to sacrifice themselves.

And if not, they can get their patsy to do it. Or have an evil witch impregnated. So really, what's the issue?

All dragons with wings are female, ergo the Archdemon is most likely female?

Ferelden is MUCH better than Orlais

Thedas is still developing. There have been times in our history when things have been even worse.

You get to solve most of those problems if you want.

Very nicely put.

But I'm not so sure that the real world is worth dying for either.  ;-)

It was the dragon's time of month.

Except for dragons it lasts several years.
