Seriously though, the problem with wild mages is it takes too many levels before wild surges are managable. Once they reach high levels Dweomer Shields make surges trivial. Moreso if you stack them through cheesy methods. When you get to Throne of Bhaal territory even the -5 caster level penalty stops to matter. They're like sorcerers with a wizard's spell selection. The problem is getting to that point. I have to give you credit for playing one through BG1. That had to be a pain.
