I fought Gaxxkang. I fough the High Dragon. I fought the brood-mother. I fough Flemeth.

But none of them were as tough as a bunch of back-alley thugs in Denerim.

Yea Ser Cauthrien in Denerim estate if you take her straight up with no pulling into Anoras old room :P

Must say misderection hex is one way to cakewalk it though.

Gax was rough... he cleaned my clock when I took him on at level 14 or so. I gave up after a few tries. I came back at level 18 and with much better gear and also Wynne instead of Leliana and that was a lot better.

The first boss encounter in The Fade was very rough too (the one with 4 different forms). Mainly because it was early in the game and I could not decide to avoid the fight and come back when I was stronger (like with Gax) when I was in better shape since I was stuck in the Fade. I also did have Morrigan since I subbed Wynne for her so I lacked spells with offensive punch (no COC!)

I think that's the one battle were all those hours spent on baldur's gate II really come into play. It's all about crowd control, waking nightmare, blizzard, cone of cold on the archers and engaging Cauthrien with a tank and off-tank. No dirty tricks needed.

I really like that fight, it's really tactical.

See now I have never died to Gax, I thought that fight was quite easy and not as long as people claimed. The moment he buffs himself with anything I just dispelled him, so no aoe damage and no healing for him. Dispel Magic is your friend in this game. If you dispel him he is just another tank and spank Revenant imo. When I went there with my no mage party he died pretty quick as well, just had to make use of heal potions.

I have to agree that the swarms of bandit archers are the hardest encounters in this game. They gave me the most troubles in my first few playthroughs.

Marjolaine at lvl 10, a party without a tank(3 mages and Liliena). boy she hit hard with her bare hands!

Broodmother with 1 mage only (why did I think trying Deep Roads without Wynne would be fun?); Flemeth at lvl 9 before I cheesed it and used Shale to tank her; and some of the back alley Denerim fights.

I'd say fighting branka, Jarvia & the landsmeet fight (not the duel). Branka because of the cloning, Jarvia because she would always run back into her traps compiled with her army of rogues/archers & the landsmeet because all I could do was kite Logaine & his gaurds around the hall.

I could also go with fighting Logaine's _itch the 1st time you get to fight her but i think you get more xp out of going to jail.

Spider Queen on the Deep Roads was the most difficult for me, I had to reload like 6 times.

And, shame on me, that encounter with wolves on the road. Nasty beasts, I am sure they set the leghold traps specially for me...

The final Desire Demon on Nightmare if you choose to take Jowan instead of one of your own mages. That fight can be rough.

The Redcliff fight on Nightmare if you want to save Murdock. That dude falls like a chump.

as for none boss fights, I'd have to go with the 3 major fights before the prison in the last battle & the prison gate battle. the 3 before the prison all i could do was have Leiana go up, crit or scatter shot a few & hope I got back around the corner where my party was before getting killed. I think I had the hardest time with either the last major fight right before the gates or the one before that, which ever one had the orge standing at the top of the stairs with an army of archers with him.

actually there are two signs explaining that the traps was set for the wolves.  I loled when I read it.

Yea that was sorta funny.... concidering that the sign was BEHIND! the traps & pack of wovles! I read those signs, set my controller down & stepped outside for a smoke, the girlfriend asked what was wrong i said go read the signs I'm standing infront of then look at the wall of traps & horde of wolves behind me. she laughed & i glared ROFL!

I failed a pick pocket while in Denerim and right after ran into Logain's Guard it was a total surprise party members got slaughtered in quick form. Approx 20 or so from white to yellow and I think that the Capt. was an orange. They jump you twice btw. It was early in the game so I can't remember my party level at the time but right after Lothering so below 10 at any rate.

at lower levels i had trouble with the blood mages in a denerim sidequest, they just kept spamming blood wound before i could do anything and i had nothing to counter them with, where as i personally had no trouble with the likes of cauthrien or archdemon

it's usually the pure number of opponents that is the hard battles rather then a specific single enemy. a enemy that is alone is so screwed.

Nope fight Gax guy he's solo probably hardest guy in the game.

Yes, I have to agree.  I can't imagine killing him on nightmare setting.   This setting would be some battle.

For a mage, Jarvia. For a warrior Gaxkang. For a rogue The Bloodmage leader and or Caladrius.
But I think the 2 hardest battle generally at Nightmare mode is the Hurlock Emissary in the Kocari Wilds, and the Ogre at the tower while your a vulnerable new recruit.

The one that really stuck in my mind was my first encounter with the revenant in the Redcliffe courtyard. Mage PC, and I didn't realise I could open the gate for reinforcements... Image IPB

Cauthrien was also...interesting. Although that may have gone better if I'd had my normal party (I didn't want to bring Alistair on the basis that my character wouldn't have wanted to risk the candidate for king while attempting to rescue the queen...) After taking out Flemeth and the high dragon without really having much difficulty at all, Cauthrien running around two-hit-killing even the "tank" (Sten was no substitute...) party members was a bit of a shock.

Gaxkang I actually didn't find too difficult - carefully placed a Glyph of Neutralisation under his feet but not under the tanks (being Alistair and a wolf), got him pinned in the corner, and kept the tanks healed.

Yes, yes, they're set for the benefit of the wolves! Image IPB
