But none of them were as tough as a bunch of back-alley thugs in Denerim.

Must say misderection hex is one way to cakewalk it though.

The first boss encounter in The Fade was very rough too (the one with 4 different forms). Mainly because it was early in the game and I could not decide to avoid the fight and come back when I was stronger (like with Gax) when I was in better shape since I was stuck in the Fade. I also did have Morrigan since I subbed Wynne for her so I lacked spells with offensive punch (no COC!)

Yea Ser Cauthrien in Denerim estate if you take her straight up with no pulling into Anoras old room![]()

I think that's the one battle were all those hours spent on baldur's gate II really come into play. It's all about crowd control, waking nightmare, blizzard, cone of cold on the archers and engaging Cauthrien with a tank and off-tank. No dirty tricks needed.
I really like that fight, it's really tactical.

I have to agree that the swarms of bandit archers are the hardest encounters in this game. They gave me the most troubles in my first few playthroughs.

I could also go with fighting Logaine's _itch the 1st time you get to fight her but i think you get more xp out of going to jail.

And, shame on me, that encounter with wolves on the road. Nasty beasts, I am sure they set the leghold traps specially for me...

actually there are two signs explaining that the traps was set for the wolves. I loled when I read it.GuilisBaenre wrote...
Spider Queen on the Deep Roads was the most difficult for me, I had to reload like 6 times.

Yea that was sorta funny.... concidering that the sign was BEHIND! the traps & pack of wovles! I read those signs, set my controller down & stepped outside for a smoke, the girlfriend asked what was wrong i said go read the signs I'm standing infront of then look at the wall of traps & horde of wolves behind me. she laughed & i glared ROFL!

it's usually the pure number of opponents that is the hard battles rather then a specific single enemy. a enemy that is alone is so screwed.
Nope fight Gax guy he's solo probably hardest guy in the game.
Yes, I have to agree. I can't imagine killing him on nightmare setting. This setting would be some battle.

But I think the 2 hardest battle generally at Nightmare mode is the Hurlock Emissary in the Kocari Wilds, and the Ogre at the tower while your a vulnerable new recruit.

Cauthrien was also...interesting. Although that may have gone better if I'd had my normal party (I didn't want to bring Alistair on the basis that my character wouldn't have wanted to risk the candidate for king while attempting to rescue the queen...) After taking out Flemeth and the high dragon without really having much difficulty at all, Cauthrien running around two-hit-killing even the "tank" (Sten was no substitute...) party members was a bit of a shock.
Gaxkang I actually didn't find too difficult - carefully placed a Glyph of Neutralisation under his feet but not under the tanks (being Alistair and a wolf), got him pinned in the corner, and kept the tanks healed.
Yes, yes, they're set for the benefit of the wolves!Jestert wrote...
