After an early patch, I would occasionally find myself sucked into a game in progress with no knowledge of its settings or players, but no big deal, I'd quit out, try again, and most of the time I would get a lobby.
Another patch later, and the lobby became virtually inaccessible except by using "create a game", which most people know usually leaves you either waiting for 15 minutes with no one joining, or going into a game solo.
I'm past the point where I care about what classes other players are using - I either adjust my strategy to accomodate how the other players play, or I live with it and leave the lobby after the game is over.
I still care a great deal about both the difficulty level, and the random options. But unless I'm willing to play alone (most of the time, that is how I start playing) I have to join a game in progress that could be in any wave, with any difficulty, and almost always has a specifically selected location/enemy. If it's on a later wave, my equipment is wasted (which already happens enough with the Ops packs being wasted 50% of the time). Even when I play alone, unless I set it to "private", I'm pretty much saddling up to three players with the exact problem I have.
I don't expect they'll go back to the original matchmaking design (although I believe it was a lot better), but couldn't a new toggle option be created? A Lobby Only option for players like me (a minority, but there are plenty of us) and a Lobby/Game in Progress option for players who don't mind jumping into the unknown.
