Hello, I am a relatively new player and was wondering about the Paragon and Renegade feature in ME1. I am trying to stick strictly with Renegade choices. If I happen to pick dialogue or actions that add to my Paragon, will I lose any points in Renegade? Or is it possible to raise one without losing anything in the other? Thanks for any help you can offer.

The Paragon and Renegade features are on two separatescales and can only be increased. Taking renegade actions will increase the renegade meter and vice versa. Taking renegade actions will have no effect on the paragon meter.

If you're playing a Renegade, bear in mind that you don't always have to choose every 'renegade' conversation choice - in fact you can acquire a higher Renegade score by sometimes choosing non-renegade options.
This mainly comes up when you first talk to quest givers: the renegade option is often something like, "screw you, i don't have time for this," and then you can't do the quest at all. You may get +2 renegade for giving that answer; but if you give the neutral answer ("um, sure, if i have time") you can get the quest, along with any items and XP that come with it, and then when you complete the mission you can sometimes Intimidate them into giving you more money or items, for even more renegade points.
In short, sometimes the greatest renegades seem helpful at first, only to put the screws to you later.

That's true. It's often wise to go neutral when you're playing renegade but want to get the most out of a given conversation. Paragon might not be in character, but the renegade choices are often over the top and silly. Also, unless you're playing a sociopath, it's wise to at least be neutral in responses to your companions on the Normandy.

Not necessarily so. I find that if I go with options I would follow in real life, I easily end up with 75% Renegade... The crewies are commonly crybabies and Paragon-answers seem totally out of place. I mean, why would Shep (the ranking officer aboard) dry the tears of a Gunnery Chief? Or allow a Lieutenant to second guess orders?
There are many situations in all three games that are perfectly fine with a strong answer, but reward you with Renegade-points. Makes me scratch my head sometimes.
