Maps can make any video game world look cool and epic. It doesn't mean they all are.

Compare it to Tamriel and the Elder Scrolls. 

Morrowind, Cyrodill, and Skyrim are all infinitely more interesting. Thedas is your standard fare 'high fantasy' land. There's nothing unique about it at all. The land is incredibly flat and boring, there is nothing interesting to look at on the horizon, the cities are lifeless and lack occupants, the art style is equally as boring and unoriginal, and the list goes on.

The only thing Thedas has over Tamriel is unique and interesting characters the PC can interact with. That's literally it.

I don't think they're planning on going Elder Scrolls level openness but I expect we will see zones that are fairly large and open to exploration.

I think they said that DA3 would have a more open world than DA2, there is no chance that they would make DA3 an open world.

The DLC for DA2 provided for more interesting environments...

Hoping that those were a prelude for the next installment. Orlais has great differentiation in the landscape that could be in the game if BW continues from there.

If Bioware makes D3 an open world, it will be the final nail in the coffin for the already ailing company. Leave open world nonsense to junk games like Elder Scraps and Failout. We don't need more nerds flocking to actual story-based RPG genre with their need to wander the game world for 30 minutes in order to complete another generic FedEx quest. Bioware is treading a very fine line here. DA universe is supposed to be a spiritual successor to BG series - and I didn't do any meaningless "open world" exploration in BG, that's for sure.

What was actually written on the article didn't sound like Skyrim open world, it sounds like they would be making something similar to the world map of Origins. At least I hope they will be, the Skyrim open world would feel very awkward and bizarre in Dragon Age, especially since the battle system won't be first person. It would take forever to walk through the world if it were open like Skyrim is.

Well I can only hope they will be bringing it back to Origins, which was the more successful of the stories.

Yes, I agree. However, while the DLC was great in fixing most of my complaints about DA2, it still had one problem. The funnel down a tunnel feel when you're running through environments. It seems like everything follows a road and it's 10 feet wide. Like it funnels you exactly where they want. Why can't they open it up more to at least give an illusion off it's bigger than it is? Bioware's level design is really bad, IMO. It's arguably their weakest aspect of the games. Ambient environments and level design need to take a big step forward for DA3 so the world can come to life.

As mentioned in another thread, Baldur's Gate should be what Bioware is aiming more for with the "open" feel in their games. I've only seen them attempt it twice. Baldur's Gate(arguably had the best exploration formula) and Mass Effect 1(arguably had one of their worst exploration formulas).

Agreed (again :)). That's why I wrote a prelude......

If not all can be possible (zots and stuff....) if even some of them would be really open to some extend this would be great. Kind of like the Dalish settlement in DAO before the woods but bigger..

Yeah, you really can't compare the two because they are different kinds of rpg games.  Bioware RPGs tend to be more character driven and want to make you feel like you are in a movie to some extent while the elderscrolls games tend to focus more on the world itself and exploration.

If we could get a game that is massive in scope like Skyrim but have that character driven focus like DA2, then I'd be happy.  It's not likely to happen though as that would take a ton of time and money to make.

(Of course, I'm pretty sure that the article doesn't mean anything other than someone is spreading unsubstantiated rumors.) I don't need another sandbox game, there are other developers who have already made the world their main character and done it very well. And while I enjoy a good dungeon dive as much as the next girl, I'd rather not spend days wandering around the country side trying to check out every nook and cranny. What's compelling about BioWare games is their characters and the story. So as long as they don't lose sight of that while creating a more imaginative and interactive world, I'm sure I'll be pleased.

When did The Elder Scroll games go from sandbox to just open world?

Damn, I feel dirty just calling that a article. "The was a report released and we have a report" "Oh it was just some nameless fans that talked to some nameless developer"

I have reliable information that DA3 will not take place in Thedas. It will actually take place during the hyborian age on Earth and will tell the story of how humans migrated to Thedas. There will also be giant walking Mechs, a four armed dogged, and a purple monkey that pisses canadian maple syrup and poops waffles.
I heard that from a magic cokaroach at the Mars Comic Con.

I thought the same thing too when I read that.  I almost took Origins back because, to me, it wasn't an open world but stuck on paths.  With some here claimin that TW2 does an open world experince, I guess I don't understand what an open world game means now.  I'm so confused!Posted Image

You have two opposing elements at work. A story needs focus , open worlds are all about wandering around doing your own thing.

The more you add of one the more the other loses out. Banter is all well and good but when you either run out and it becomes silence, or you hear the same line for the 100th time (WKC II while hunting for a 2% drop item) it does grate.
What initially seems like a very simple idea "Stick a Bioware game in a TES world" is not really so simple.

The reason the Witcher2 works is because it gives the illusion of an area much larger than it is, while at the same time not leaving the plot for hours at a time to do sidequests.

Larger area maps where the player is not railroaded into having to visit each in a specific order (similar to DA:O, but with larger maps) would be a reasonable interpretation of "open world" for me. It's not Skyrim open world, but it would be free roaming where a player to go somewhere, leave to another out of many other locations and return.

In the second Dragon Age, we were limited into three variations of locales. I'm sure that some people felt that the different districts of Kirkwall counted as different locales, but impression is more important than actual numbers. (All designers should know this IMHO.) I got the impression that we rarely left Kirkwall despite the number of different maps.

In DA:O, it felt like I was traveling to other places even though it was really just different maps. (Even then, Denerim felt like one location to me despite its multiple areas.)

So, I'll take the "free roam" version of areas as represented in DA:O over the second Dragon Age. I will wish for larger maps, though (even if it's just the impression of a larger map).

Still, has anyone been able to verify this "open world" rumor that the article irresponsibly cited from some random fan?

Something like the Witcher2 or NWN would work well. A large area map that the player can explore as they wish.

I really, really, really, really doubt that Bioware could do an open world game well. So I really hope this is not remotely true.

Hey guys, I talked to a Bioware DA3 developer and he said that Cullen will be in our party and be a LI. He also said that our other companions will also be LI and will include Teagan, Alistair, Zombie Anders and Fenris. We will have a set character named Sue and there will be no character creator except to change haircolor and the new setting for the game will be Mordor.

You can have free travel without an open world. Baldur's Gate did this. Even without the intervening wilderness areas, there could still be open travel. Mass Effect had open travel.

How did you get to the Gnoll Stronghold?  How did you find Nashkel or the Firewine Ruins?

BG had extensive open exploration, both within each area and across the world map generally.  The world wasn't continuous, but there was still open exploration.  And I'd love to see that return.

How could you explore in the Witcher2?  I've played it only once and I only had three main locations to play in and they were given to me in order of progression.  I walked around on paths, hitting the right button to climb or descend, but they were part of the same area, much like DA2's maps were (graphics not counting)   Of course, it was rather a short game because I seemed to keep stumbling on the main plot line and progressing further into the game to the end.

Good point.  Dragon Age is all about the world of Thedas, not the main characters that are discarded continously.  This, Bioware stresses to us.  Of course, "world" can also mean the politics, social struggles and freedoms that make up the world in which the characters live in.
