This is 50% related to Dragon Age.

So I got the UE in the mail about a week ago, but as soon as I tried to install it my disk drive wouldn't read it. At all. No whirring to tell me it's doing anything, no lights on to say it's thinking, nothing.

It's not just specific to DA either. No disks at all will be read.

So I figure, what would be the best -- and preferably cheapest -- way to fix this issue: My computer's disk drive refuses to read any discs of any type -- games, music CDs, etc.?

Well.. it's easy to solve your UE problem. Just use the EA: Origin store to download the digital version.

You only need your CD-Key (assuming you've registered your game, which by the logo under you avatar I see that you have) to verify that you'd purchased it. The download is free.

You might try looking into device manager and seeing if the disk drive (I'm assuming DVD drive) shows there, and seeing if you can roll back the driver or find an up-to-date driver online. If it doesn't show there and you can't think of anything you might have uninstalled or changed before it stopped working, it might be the drive itself is bad. They're fairly cheap though, so if all you have to do is replace it then the damage isn't that bad. Maybe you have another computer with a disk drive lying around that you can swap to see if a different drive works.

Really? Huh, I didn't know that.

Well, I had recently installed a slew of discs that would allow me to fix some issues with my laptop's drivers, since my laptop hasn't wanted to work for some weeks now.

Prior to this issue, it was reading discs fine. The aforementioned driver-fixing discs were read, downloaded/installed, and went into my computer's system. Then when the UE went in, nothing.

oh yah, that sounds like a 'not recognizing the drive' issue rather than hardware. drive mapping perhaps?

Unfortunately, I can't help you. This is when I call friends who 'know stuff'
