EDI/Joker, what happens if they don't get together?

In the synthesis ending, you see Edi and Joker get off the normandy.

But I've heard rumblings that you only see them IF you persuaded Joker and Edi to get together. (supposedly also applies in the original control ending also, not sure since I didn't pick that prior to the Extended Cut).

What happens if you don't get them together? Are there other changes elsewhere in the game, does the synthesis ending NOT show EDI? Does constantly telling EDI not to upgrade herself, or that synthetics are not real life (argument between Javik/EDI, etc) affect it at all?

I'm only curious because I read on some forum somewhere else that there are more changes/impacts to their relationship than previously I knew about.

I did a full Renegade playthrough where I didn't encourage them to get together once. Naturally, they don't end up as a couple, and much of their dialogue changes as a result. If I recall correctly, for example, the conversation with EDI in Purgatory shifts from revolving around their relationship to the fact that EDI feels a bit isolated from other people in general (and the Normandy crew in particular) because there are no other life forms in the galaxy that are quite like her (though by the end of the conversation she arrives at the conclusion that she doesn't need to feel isolated at all). Also, just before Priority: Earth, instead of saying that she kissed Joker for luck, she says that she picked a four leaf clover on the Citadel. There are other little changes like that. I don't recall how the Synthesis cutscene plays out, as I didn't pick that ending during that playthrough, though I expect it works much the same as it would have if you encouraged them to get together, except without the two of them embracing.

During that playthrough I also Renegaded EDI all throughout the conversations with her, meaning I kept telling her that synthetics were not really "alive" and whatnot, but she didn't seem to be very swayed by Shepard's words. If I recall correctly, she still wound up modifying her core programming by the end of the game, even though I told her not to after she got her body. I guess EDI's convinced that she's truly alive regardless of what Shepard says, and she only considers Shepard's words as an alternative perspective on the matter (it sometimes feels like there's a bit more tension between her and Shepard if you go this route with her).

I remember the leaked script had Joker being all mopey and down if you discouraged their romance. I've never done so in-game, so is this the case or not?

If I remember right, he seems rather down on himself if you discourage him from pursuing EDI at Purgatory, and if click on him after that, he'll say something like, "Go have fun, I'll guard the table" with a certain tinge of melancholy. I don't recall any mopeyness in his conversations after that, though.

Can anyone verify that this is true? I hope it is, as I'm not a big fan of the relationship.

I just wanted to know if you prevented the relationship, what happens in synthesis.

Though all the other changes sound fun. I'm considering a playthrough with a Shepard that is much like Javik in that he hates all synthetics and will stop at nothing to wipe them out, including the Geth and EDI if he was given the chance.
