All the AoE spells.... Great for blocking doorways and then luring enemies through them. Particularly Blizzard, since it freezes them on the way through.
The Disorient -> Waking Nightmare chain is also really good for crowd control.

I don't like walking bomb. Or any spells that aren't 100% under your control and may hurt allies.
Blizzard, Lightning Storm, Inferno, and Earthquake on the other hand can be dropped on your enemies' heads with zero risk to yourself or your party members. They all require 30+ magic to get so won't be available until around lvl 10, but they are very fun to play with.

Friendly fire only kicks in on higher levels.
Walking bomb is badass.

so what about healing spells?
I always nab the basic heal spell and take SH as my spec.... but is it worth it to go any higher since that's Wynne's type?
I guess I want that survivabilty of defense and offense

The 3rd heal spell is pretty good (But use it early it doesn't help when your nearly dead). Maybe heroic attack and defence if you want haste. If you don't ,I'd go with the Glyphs.

Mana Clash utterly destroys enemy magi 95% of the time (they have a small chance to resist). I saw this used to great effect on Nightmare difficulty where enemy magi tend to be rather deadly adversaries.
To add to what has already been said: friendly fire happens on any difficulty setting above Easy, the amount of damage increasing with difficulty. I usually play on Easy to marginalize combat but for my dark warden I had to bump it up to Normal so I could kill neutral NPCs.

Walking Bomb and Virulent Walking Bomb are extremely powerful. They seem to deal more damage than the other AoEs except of course for Storm of the Century. If you're on normal or below, the friendly fire isn't that big a deal and on normal I found myself deliberately detonating bombs in the middle of my party without even being worried.
Sure if you're on a higher difficulty you have to play a bit smarter, but it's still a very good spell. Just combine it with any of the many spells that lock down the enemies and you'll be dealing tons of AoE damage. Actually even the single-target component of VWB does great damage.

I'm currently running an elven mage, but as a new player who just recently picked the games up on sale. I do play on Easy mode because I don't really care about the combat being challenging; I just enjoy playing the story.
Mana clash is definitely awesome for anti-mage casting as Endurium said. Not only does it usually kill with one shot, it's an AOE spell you can hit multiple nearby mages with, and it can often be cast into a neighboring room. I recently knocked out three mages with one shot in what should otherwise have been a tough encounter, because they were all standing inside its circle.
I have a maxed-out fire line, because I intended to take Morrigan along and have her complete the cold line, but I've started working on that line the last level up as I find I leave Morrigan at camp. While it takes a bit of management, more than once I've cleared a dangerous room of enemies that could not yet see me by having my party members stand still and positioning myself to cast an inferno where it covers as many of the enemy as possible. Using the overhead view is helpful for positioning this. At its most ideal, the enemies will run around in the fire trying to find you/escape till they perish. At worst, you deal with a much more weakened swarm of enemies than going into the room was going to give you.
I maxed out the Virulent Bomb line as well. If I were going from a purely RP perspective I'd probably skip it, as they're all kinda gross abilities, but I'm finding Animate very useful from an extra target perspective in big fights. Enemies beating on your pet are not beating on you. :> If you *do* use Animate (or the ranger pet skill) remember that clicking on the "additional tactics slot" message that pops up when you initially cast it is the only way to set tactics for the pet. Without setting tactics then, the pet will only do normal attacks unless you control it manually. Also note that activating Spell Might from the mana clash line right before casting it will result in more skills available to the pet. You can turn Spell Might back off once the pet is animated.

Mana Clash is extremely overpowered. You can easily deal 1000+ damage with it in some cases. You can oneshot mage bosses. It works on demons too as they apparently use mana.
The most overpowered of course is Storm of the Century. You can kill groups of enemies before they can even see you, so they won't fight back.
