Neither, actually. While I grew up with Afrikaans as my mother tongue, and often still speak it, it is not my primary language nowadays. I married an ex-Rhodesian woman, and she and my kids are (as you said) Anglophones. Therefore, I just speak English primarily nowadays to be understood (and because my vocabulary is greater in that language).

Seeing as how both you and the Lord of Oz hail from former colonies, you could unite against the Pomms!

Why? 

Seriously though, that shows a distinct lack of cultural knowledge.

A South African would rather support a Kiwi than an Aussie, unless it is rugby.  A South African would rather support a Pom than an Aussie, unless it is rugby.  A South African would rather support a Pom in rugby against the Kiwis, and a Kiwi in cricket than a Pom.  I cannot speak for how Poms, Kiwis or Aussies see us.

Oh, and (to correct Sirian from earlier) South Africans DO actually view both Aussies and Kiwis as sheep shaggers when we're being horribly stereotypical, but apply it more to Aussies, because we generally dislike them more on a cultural level. 

tldr: no way in hell would that ever work!

Kyrene, be nice to Sirian, please. What he said was perfectly fine -- was his opinion and put forth in a very civil manner. I took no offense from it. I was fully prepared to potentially see some very nasty things (which didn't happen). That comes with the territory of opening up publically on something very personal and, for some, controversial. I can see where Sirian is coming from. I knew there would be potential that I might be seen as insincere or seeking attention.

My point was that if my story touched even one person -- maybe a poster, maybe a lurker -- and gave them a different perspective, or inspired them in some way, or made them take more notice of someone in their life, then my post would have been worth it. You never know who you might touch with your own story, which was why I put it out there in so public a place. Judging by a few PMs I have received, it did serve its purpose and touched a few people who benefitted from its existence, so for that I am grateful and glad I said my piece.

Moving on to happier times...

Well Afrikaans is contains quit a bit of Dutch and Dutch is a Germanic language.
