For some reason, people posting stuff like that on public message boards really bothers me. I can't really explain why. It just does.

No it's not that it's tasteless... it's hard to explain.

I just do not like to make a big deal out of my problems, and do not like sharing them with others, particularly random people I've never met and never will meet. I guess it just makes it a bit hard to take seriously when people are so open with complete strangers about stuff they claim is super important to them. 

That makes my more cynical side (do I have another side?) doubt their sincerity, or wonder how much it truly does matter to them, which, in turn makes ME feel like a terrible person for always assuming the worst of people, when they're probably totally sincere.

STOP MAKING ME FEEL LIKE A TERRIBLE PERSON, GUISE.  

P.S. I hope I don't come off as uncaring or heartless or whatever. That's not my intention.

I am most certainly perfectly capable of empathising (saying otherwise is very condescending and quite insulting). 

My main problem with things like this is that it is very hard to distinguish genuinely sincere people who just want to talk to someone about their problems, from attention seekers simply looking for lip service sympathy posts. 

Solution: if you want to tell someone about your problems, you tell your psychologist, or a close friend, spouse, etc. You should not disclose the information to the entire internet. 

In connection to this, lemme share something with all of you. Something I have reached after nearly 30 years of self reflection and observation of others. (Imagine me with a Stardusk impression on my face and the solemn pronunciation a seasoned wisdom dealer)

Your reaction to something is better off leaving the stimuli out of it. What I mean is whether someone is being sincere or just looking for lip service, your reaction will first and foremost have an effect on you yourself. Therefore, whether the stimuli was real or not, your reaction will leave you feeling in some way. It is up to you to decide how you want to feel.

To make it simple, if I extend a hand to someone just looking for lip service, that will leave me feeling good about myself regardless of what the intentions of the other actually were. I won (not going to go deeper into this, winning is something most of us consider positive) and therefore it is a win-win situation. If I find out they were only looking for lip service: its still win-win, because we both got something good out of it. I will act the same next time I face a similar situation, because it is the "I" that counts.

Having a muzzle on all the time for fear of reactions will result in the sick sad world of Lady Gagas and Kim Kardashians (in this case identified with fasle values) that we live now. Nothing will change until we start reflecting first and foremost on ourselves.

Kyrene wasn't trying to insult you, mate. I know how irritating this sounds, but perspectives change with age. In that Stardusk is certainly right.
