I am usually not one for soldiers in MP but this new addition to the class line up has literally changed the game. It is everything a soldier should be, a badass, multiple heavy weapon carrying tank with legs. Why play a Destroyer?
Because bullets.
The Build:
6/0/6/6/6
Devastator Mode:accuracy/RoF/Dmg
- Rank 5 mag size increase is tempting and has awesome use on certain weapons like gaining a shot in the Black Widow and the Wraith, but overall RoF seems to give you the most versatile advantage on any weapon you choose to use, including the single shot power-houses.
- These little things are awesome, maybe they dont hit as hard as other grenades, but you have to remember with the above setup you are firing 5 of them at once. When you adjust to the learning curve on these things you can clear out trash faster than most, an excellent panic button when you are overwhelmed, or nice support from range.
- Obvious that on this guy you want maxed wep damage. I leave rank 5 marked as unique to account for playstyle. If you want rely on your rifle like a true soldier, take headshots and pop the melon off of anything that isn't a boss unit even on higher difficulties. Taking the power damage increase just means your frags hit harder and that's not a bad thing. The choice is yours here.
The Loadout:
Typhoon: EB and EM (it has built in piercing!)
Claymore: EB and Shredder
Warfighter/AR amp/shotgun amp/barrage package (again match the gear with your playstyle)
- If you don't have your hands on a typhoon yet, the Harrier is another great option, if you don't have that either try a Revenant or another favorite AR, some of them recently got buffed! As for the secondary weapon I chose the Claymore because of the reload canceling you can pull off with this class. (which I explain further down in the post.) Alternate backups include the new Piranha or a Hurricane if you have it.
Playing the Field:
One of the greatest advantages, besides all the ones you already receive, from Devastator Mode is being immune to staggering. Take an atlas rocket to the face? Keep shooting. Hunters on your face? Moar bullets. I have avoided death and in turn dealt it more often due to this mechanic. Another very useful function I have discovered with the Destroyer is his ability to reload cancel. Sure, many of us know about reload canceling, and we know that any class can do it with any weapon, and we also know that infiltrators usually benifit the most due the the bonus from TC and its easy timing with TC's cooldown.
At the start of waves I tend to launch my grenades into large groups to help clear the trash and save ammo for elites/bosses. The handy thing is, while carrying large heavy weapons (which have a drawback of a slow reload time) you can hit the granade power button to cancel your reload instantly instead of waiting on a cooldown such as cloak. Instant Claymore or Typhoon reloads make this leadhose even more deadly.
Another mentionable note that I have noticed with this class is his heavy melee. Yes, you read that correctly, but it is not because it deals massive damage, but for the simple fact that if you do get downed, as you are revived (or if you self-gel) you can heavy melee much like geth can to clear yourself of enemies with a staggering AoE, except the Destroyer bypasses the standing animation, meaning you get back up and kcik the earth in the face like a boss. This may be a bug and changed in a future patch.
