I have found the anvil in ostegar and have done it both ways, killing branka and saving the anvil and destroying the anvil. Is there a difference in the outcome?

In the final battle your troops differ based on this choice (not that they're really needed). And the little epilogue lines of text at the close of the game. Branka will always wind up behaving just like Caridin (as he predicted) if you save the anvil.
