I cant travel through denerim because i keep getting ambushed by this army of around 17 soldiers. they accuse me of "pilfering". fair enough, as i have got leliana to mug just about everyone in the city, i assume that thats what they are refering to.

anyway, i get owned within seconds. flemeth, high dragon and the revenants are nothing compared to this battle.

did anyone else face this and actually win?

yes it not to bad and once you kill one guard patrol there will be one more as well, I find you definitely need potions and/or wynne to help and one character must go for the pesky crossbowman right away while the tank or so handles the others

Tactics?

Really, compared to those fights you list...and the Wolf Pack Encounters, this battle is pretty easier.
Stay back, make them come to you, take out their ranged with your ranged,

If you still have problems, drop the difficulty.

It's pretty rough, you just have to make liberal use of pause to queue up tactics and poultices/heals.

Try all the CC spells like sleep, waking nightmare, mass paralysis, and if you have Leliana scattershot. Most of the grey level soldiers drop literally in one or two volleys. Unless of course you are here at low level but you must be at least level 10 to even be here with wynne completing the mage tower. Personally I take Denerim after at least two treaties are done and I have my second specialization so 14+ makes it easier. Maybe even take Ohgren or Sten with Indomitable for stun immunity against the mass archers spamming scattershot.

There are quite a few encounters in Denerim that go much smoother with better skilled and equipped characters. And yes as Tassiaw mentioned definately try to micromanage your group more effectively than tactics can. At least for for the opening moves and anytime you feel the battle getting away from you.

Storm of the Century clears out the other bandit encounters with the greatest of ease. It's seriously like a vacuum cleaner to bad guys.

On my first playthrough as a mage, I only had Leliana stealing from a few people, and I ended up getting these ambushes all of the time.

On my second playthough as a solo rogue, I stole from every single person I could and never got a single ambush.

Does anyone know exactly who you have to steal from to get these?

I think it is if you fail at stealing or steal the "bad luck charm" thingie. Not sure though.

ooohhh, the bad luck charm. I'll have to keep that on me next time. I didn't bother stealing from the barkeep at the lake the second time because of that item.

I only write this in case others see this thread in the future(I saw it now). I was looking for if those ambushes actually had to do with my thief pickpocketing people. Because then I'd feel bad about killing the guards.

About tactics. Assuming you have a sensible setup you have at least 1 mage(i recommend 2) and 1 warrior. Use your warrior to gain the attention of the bulk of the force. Use your mage to cast force field on 1 ranged and crushing prison on another. Pick those furthest away. Then fire your aoe's at the bulk and try to avoid friendly fire on the warrior. Then finish the rest of the ranged with your mage and thief, by now the thief has reached the ranged, unless the thief is ranged itself of course.

Force field is the most useful spell in the game in my opinion. It can save allies, like making a low-hp mage a tank for 20+ seconds, take the strongest aoe casters, and other strong units out of the battle while you clean up the lesser opponents, and so on.

Also, be sure to remember using poultices if you don't have, or have time to, heal.

This looks like a necro'd thread, apologies, but I found it via Google (since searching for "patrol" here came up with nothing). I've had one of these patrol encounters and it was tough! Can someone confirm there will be only one more, than I can travel on the back streets of Denerim freely?

Thanks

Just to answer my own question:
I've moved around Denerim freely since the 2nd ambush attempt; so far it seems that two ambushes is indeed the end of it.
