The fun of getting this game to run on Windows 7. I forgot about that. Well, I've got to get this game running first before I can add fun things to it.

It wasn't very hard at all, compared to some other games I've tried. All I did was install the community patch and it takes care of improving textures, updating to modern widescreen resolution, etc., as well as fixing a lot of bugs and restoring cut content.
You need to go here to get the latest community patch (8.1 I believe)

It's not just the patch. It's figuring out the right combo of Win XP emulator to run and then figuring out who to relate that with Steam. According to the forums on Steam, it's a pretty common problem. I now remember what turned me off from playing on PC.
I've never used any WinXP emulator for VTMB, just run it directly from the Steam start menu in Win7.
The only change I made to the Steam start menu setting was to add the "-console 1" to the launch options, and that was just in order to enable the console, so I could use a console command to get past an area where I was stuck.
If you right click on the game in your library, go to Properties, then Set Launch Options, you can add -console 1 in the box there if you want to be able to use console commands.

Hmm... It's not working for me. I get an error message that reads "can't find steam." The game refuses to open. The last time I played it, I had to use an XP emulator in order to get it to run. Looking over the forum now to see if there's a fix.
That happens sometimes with modern games as well. Try to restart Steam.
If that doesn't fix it, try installing the community patch 8.1. It includes a 64-bit Vista/Win7 install fix tool as well as the widescreen resolution fix.

Thanks! I'd like to try this game again, too. What does the VTMB mod do? It says it entirely overhauls the game- isn't it better to play the vanilla first before seeing an overhaul? Same with the high res pack?Skelter192 wrote...
This is a MUST read. This thread is always updated with the last community patch and info so read it. I'm not sure but I think 8.1 is the latest patch.

Yeah, everyone on the forums suggests the same thing as well. There's also the need to change both to admin acess, which I'm going to do once I redownload it. Just a little frustrating since I've got older games to run on steam with zero intervention on my part, and now I've gotta patch.<_<

Never tried KOTOR 1, so I can't compare, but I'd say VTMB has perhaps the best story and dialogue of any RPG I've played.
Incidentally, it's not nostalgia goggles, because I only played this game for the first time a few months ago.

They're working on an MMO in the same universe which looks like it will be very faithful to this game.
It's CCP they will do a fantastic job. Just don't expect it for a long time.

I was getting the "steam not found" issue after applying 8.1. Also got the same issue with 7.9 and 8.0. It seems the renaming of a .dll fixed the issue along with fixing the UAC in the control panel.
Oh, that's awesome - glad to see you got it working.
Planning to install some other mods as well? I haven't tried any of them, but I heard that the Clan Quest mod is pretty good.

As I understand it, the studio dissolved just after the game came out so there wasn't any platform for official support. Pretty sad. It looks like they did good work.
Yeah. Rock Paper Shotgun has a pretty good interview from a couple years back with Brian Mitsoda, one of the main writers for Bloodlines, which goes over the development of the game and other thoughts he has on stuff like writing in games, which is pretty interesting:
I feel like bad writing is tolerated, while mediocre writing gets spooned. I don’t think good games necessarily need good writing, but I would really enjoy it if games that sell their story first and foremost did a better job of delivering. Certain studios and writers, I think, get a pass (and work) no matter what they turn out, while a few veterans(like Tim Schafer) continue to turn out excellent work. I think if critics are going to focus on a game’s writing, they should analyze not only the marriage of the narrative to the gameplay, but set some higher standards for what they expect from characters, plot, and dialogue.
A good scene, a good line, and/or a decent character do not make a game’s story great. Bad writing is bad writing – it might not matter if the game is fun, but don’t score the story higher because the game mechanics were tight or the setting was novel.
Ultimately, the writing really isn’t that key to a fantastic game, but for those that do make ita crucial part of their game and hype it as such, those are the games the gaming press should be a lot more critical of. And for those that identify themselves as game writers, critics and fans should absolutely hold feet to flames ad infinitum, myself included.
But yeah, Troika and Bloodlines got screwed over in releasing right alongside Half Life 2. Not a good move. Its a shame that the people that worked on the game don't get any part of the sales that have surely spiked since digital distribution has become so much more prevalent. Instead it all just goes to Activision.

As far as the writing and characters go, it is probably one of the best written RPGs I've ever played in terms of having believable characters that feel like they're actual characters that live in the world and have their own motives and schemes and they don't just grovel at the feet of the player character. You're constantly wondering who you can trust and what you should say considering what consequences what you do or say could have.
And it has probably one of the best uses of a non voiced protagonist I've seen. Your choice of vampire clan at the beginning has a significant effect on how others will view your character and what dialogue options you'll have (Malkavians).
For being one of the very first games on the Source engine, it also has some really great facial animations that hold up well and the voice acting is superb.
The combat is kind of a drag. And the sewers level is a pain in the ass to navigate. But its really a great RPG.
I'm really looking forward to Dead State, Mitsoda's next RPG.

edit- LOL, that interview is great, particularly the part about what it's like to voice game dialogue.
