My favorite parts are Hollywood and Santa Monica. Unfortunately, the gameplay near the end is a bit boring (and tough if you didn't boost your combat skills). That said, the ending (or rather, the multiple endings) is quite good.

The past few playthroughs of Bloodlines I just cheated and gave myself 999 XP just so I could explore all the disciplines fully and enjoy the plot with minimal combat effort. The combat does get VERY stale and unenjoyable if you played the game as much as I did. The rest of the game doesn't.

My first few playthroughs where I did not cheat, I invested heavily in combat. I don't even want to know how long it takes to work through hordes of enemies otherwise. But a brujah with maxed celerity and combat skills can steamroll everything. Toreador and Gangrel are also "easymode" with the right build.

Depends. There are so many ways to kill things in this game. Melee, guns, stealth kills, and disciplines. I've been able to create characters wholly specialized in one of those four capable of clearing the game. They all have their tough spots in parts, but all are viable. I would hate to play a purely diplomatic character, however. Someone that only takes conversation skills is going to go crazy once they reach the sewers.

Personally, I enjoy the combat despite finishing Bloodlines more times than I could count. Back when it released, I spent a solid six months playing nothing else and still got into it. I genuinely enjoy that aspect of RPGs, however. It doesn't matter if it isn't very strategic or engaging. I simply find it satisfying to destroy enemies in games. :P

---

Totally forgot about the Fat Larry persuasion bit. I took it for granted one might skip that skill. Persuasion and seduction tend to be popular choices. Still, missing that point in finance is not a huge loss if you have no ranks in it. The advantage of Fat Larry's free boost is getting it for the last point so you save on the huge XP cost. The 3-6 XP you get from receiving it early isn't as cost effective.

Worst case scenario, you can split points between finance and haggle to save a bit of XP instead of maxing out either.

Of course they're important. Your playing a vampire, persuasion and seduction are hallmarks of the character. A Vampire that can't seduce or bind people to their will is just a goth kid with a biting fetish.

Depends on the vampire. I mostly agree. The vast majority of my games I picked up persuasion and seduction knowing the latter was often redundant. It was a role-playing choice. I've not known anyone to play this game without taking at least one of those too. Cursed anecdotal experiences playing on my assumptions. :P

However, the monstrous vampire archetype is plausible and supported. I once played a Gangrel with low humanity and only intimidate. Total badass straight up monster in human skin... usually. Some of the low humanity dialogue is priceless. Totally befits a Gangrel too.

Hey! It's not like they're Nosferatu! Those are the only one's I would consider beasts among all the kindred. Sure the Malkavians or Toreaudors would be the more Anne Rice type vampires that seduce and lure people into shadows. The Gangrel however are more like Dracula. They walk that thin line of man and beast. Never too aristocratic, but not entirely animalistic. I'm playing a gangrel now with high seduction and intimidation. It offers the most fun too. You can turn into a beast or command bats in combat, and still seduce VV into telling you everything you want to know.

I thought I did have some Persuasion skill- I've put points into it- there just aren't enough to go around for all the damn choices. lol I probably just missed the threshold. Maybe I will reload. Without spoilers, is the ship quest from Prince Lacroix super hard?

Not really. It's a little reminiscent of Half life 2. That should give you an idea of how to play it. But keep in mind it's still a stealth mission.

I think it can go either way. A Gangrel can be erudite. Beckett is living proof of that. They can also devolve into barbarism by giving into their Beast. My Gangrel did just that. A woman who was a monster in life and became a literal one in death. I don't think it's very different with Nosferatu, appearances aside.

You should try a low humanity character at least once, though. Sadly I can't make specific references without spoiling events.

I think I'm going to. But I wonder what the more "sophisticated" vampires would be like with a low humanity.

I'm not sold on the Nosferatu. Tung is probably the most humane of them all, and he's a bit of a scumbag.

There are examples of NPCs fitting that mold in the P&P game. Good shorthand is your average selfish a-hole. Although P&P introduces other paths that complicate matters further. Plus outlook varies between sects. Not every vampire sees maintaining humanity as sacrosanct. I assume Troika didn't include other paths to keep mechanics simple.

I'm going tostart a new game of this at this rate. Too much Bloodlines talk and it's been years. Which clan to play... which clan to play...

There is a rather cool bonus for finishing this quest without getting spotted or killing anyone. Just so you know.

Here's my character sheet.  I'm open to suggestions and critique, though I doubt I'll play a Tremere again anyway.  Not that Thaumaturgy and Dominate aren't cool.  BTW is the haven at the Tremere chantry worth getting?  I didn't get the plague quest from the Tremere guy, talked to Damsel first, so now I don't think I'm going to get access to the haven.

Pfft, you mean its an All-You-Can-Drink Buffet. I even drained the corrupt *ss cop who lets you on the ship. The Prince was so mad at my Malkavian I didn't get the free haven. *shrugs*

I mean I tried to sneak by but when the first one fired at me AND hit me. It was buffet time. And when they'd stop firing at me I'd stop topping myself off.

I decided to reload and do everything in downtown over.  I did get the persuasion option with Fat Larry this time.  However for some reason Venus didn't give me my money reward for her quest ($600) so I'm still poor as a churchmouse.   I think that must be a bug.

This time around I took Blood Shield, the 3rd Thaumaturgy level, instead of 3rd level Dominate which is Suicide.  Fun as that is, the Blood Shield is more useful.  It soaks up a lot of damage even though it uses about half my blood meter.

Well you're a bit generalized there, with 1 point in strength and melee, which are the best offensive skills. But honestly I'm not sure there's anything wrong with that. All my legit characters had high strength and melee though.

The Tremere haven is quite good because you find an artifact there that boosts your thaumaturgy damage. Now that you're trying Downtown again, talk to the regent first in the plaguebearer quest and when you get the reward, pick the item instead of hte cash. When you hit Hollywood, there's a quest where you must side with the Tremere. You'll know it when it happens.

By the way, I think the Tremere are pretty hard to play (but can be quite fun) compared to the combat specialized clans, so if you are really having trouble, you might want to try out a brujah with some more points in combat skills (and Celerity!). Actually, anything with high level Celerity should be pretty easy to play.

I've reloaded twice, and each time, to fix what I did wrong I had to redo the damn Haunted Hotel. I HATE THAT HOTEL SO MUCH... but the Voerman sisters are sooooooooooo my type. Crazy means never having to say "Olive Juice".

'Cause I hate doing the ladder/elevator jumping part. I'm not good with judging distances in first person perspective. It wasn't until I got downtown that I learned I could go 3rd person at will without having to go into combat.

Let me guess, you like playing a Malkavian.  lol

Tremere is proving to be tough.  I'm going to stick it out for now.  Not being able to use firearms on vampires is a challenge.  Most melee fights are a claw for dear life.

Blood Shield will hopefully help.

The anarchs are so cool... that Nines.  Mmmff.  He and Smiling Jack are the best characters.  They've also got the best club music.

I swear I must be the only person here who doesn't have problems with ladders and jumps in this game. Oh I'm so special!

PS: Blood Shield is great. That and Purge are the best Thaumaturgy spells in my experience. The rest just go through your blood pool in seconds without being anywhere near the damage potential you'd have with something like Celerity. Blood Boil looks incredibly cool though. I dare you not to laugh maniacally while using it.

I am a Malkavian and the Internet is my other fourth wall. Nines freaked me and Damsel out towards the beginning of the third Act. And am I crazy or is Damsel voiced by Courtney Taylor? Bah... I love so many of the characters in the game. Even the ones I'm supposed to hate or mock, I love. And clearly I thought Beckkett was a Werewolf this whole time. I didn't know he was a Gangrel, he was so well spoken.

...

What? MY BEST FRIEND IS A GANGREL! THAT MEANS I CAN BE SPECIEST! *waves dismissive hand* You don't know me!

Gangrel aren't necessarily feral as Beckett proves. They are just a bit different and more solitary than other vampires.

I love most characters in the game. Smiling Jack is obviously great. I also do my best to annoy Damsel every time just because she's so funny when she gets mad.

Yeah, she also voices Heather (your ghoul), Rosa (the thin blood in Santa Monica who can see the future) and the old lady who owns Surfside Diner (in Santa Monica again). Beckett is awesome, he's pretty famous in the cWoD as well (whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/Beckett) as is Jack (whitewolf.wikia.com/wiki/Smiling_Jack).

Oh right, Rosa. She's great, one of my favorites. She just makes complete sense once you've played the game. Unfortunately, I never did find out who stole my wheeled contraption.

I know Vampires come in all kinds of flavours but its been a long long time since I've steeped myself in the WoD. Hell before Bloodlines the last thing WoD related I touched was Hunter: The Recknoning - Wayward for the PS2. And that was - many many years ago. (None of my Hunter pnp sessions remotely resembled the video games.)

Courtney Taylor is and forever will be Awesome. I remember how elated I was to learn she voiced Juhani from KOTOR. (I think I'm spelling her first name wrong.)
