First off, this is the link: http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Rank
I get creatures in white text will be easy and creatues in yellow text will be at your level and will put up a fight, however...
What is the difference between a boss and an elite boss? My real question is, will dragon age have like "rare elite" monsters that aren't related to the main quest, and you can kill just for the hell of it? (like can you find these monsters while just exploring the environments and running into, lets say, a huge dragon that takes up the entire screen basically?)
on the drage age wiki page, it mentions monsters being "ranked" by color coded text. I'm confused.

Uh, I guess it's possible you could find a powerful creature out wondering around, they've done it in most of their games. Dragon is unlikely though.
Can't particularly tell you the difference other than an elite boss would likely be a lot harder to kill.

thin circle around you foes
i would be suprised if they didnt let you turn it off or control how bright it will be
although it might be only those you select

In the Giant Bomb quicklook the normal enemies were white named. By that, I mean that if you moused over them their names where in white font. A Hurlock Alpha, a noticably harder enemy, had yellow text. I also remember hearing that boss monsters aka the ogre in the tower had red names.
Other than that I couldn't tell you what sets boss monsters apart other than they are likely at the end of areas.

Did I read the words level scaling?
Is this going to be oblivion all over again? *groan*
I hate games that punish you for leveling.

There is limited scaling. Like between 12-16 in level.

Think Mass Effect. Oblivion just had scaling based of the character's level where Mass Effect ranked the mobs and then each mob had a scale such as Bosses +5 levels. Smaller enemies were 30% of level unless you were playing on insane ofcourse which made all enemies a level -10 levels above you.

I believe it's grey -> white -> yellow -> orange -> red.

The name of the monster appears written in the proper color.

Have to admit, it's a bit of a distracting to see this sort of thing IG. This is kinda like NPC influence for me, I would rather discover it in a more realistic, less OOC informing way, even if that way means I just got my proverbial butt handed to me or I just pissed Morrigan off by saying something and was not aware she took it so harshly.

I suppose this could be modded to disappear. Not a big deal, would just have to be a toggle on/off option. Maybe it's like gore effect and the command already exists in game settings.
