Hey guys I just decided to test out the Sword Mastery tree because I was told that the extra damage to shields is broken.  What I didn't expect is that both of the options for teir 6 are broken

----

All games are on bronze with no gear or mods equiped.

----

Shields

Control - 1 point in SS
Shadow Strike Damage    Trooper    - 2 bars
Shadow Strike Damage    Centurion  - 2 shield

Sword Mastery - 3 points in SM
Shadow Strike Damage    Trooper      - kill
Shadow Strike Damage    Centurion  - 0 shield
Shadow Strike Damage    nemesis   - 1 shield

Sword Mastery - 6 points in SM (no extra damage, extra shield damage)
Shadow Strike Damage    Trooper      - kill
Shadow Strike Damage    Centurion  - 0 shield
Shadow Strike Damage    nemesis    - 1 shield

And here is a video from death_for_sale proving it too.

----

Armor

Control - Sword Mastery - 3 points in SM - SS 1 point
Shadow Strike Damage    Pyro (shot off shields only with tempest) - 4 bars

Sword Mastery - 6 points in SM (no extra damage, Extra Armor Damage)
Shadow Strike Damage    Pyro (shot off shields only with tempest) - 4 bars

----
EDIT:

It appears that the extra damage works for the melee attacks (not Shadow Strike)

Gamemako wrote...

control: light melee = 6 bars off of centurion (4 remaining)

with electrical evo: light melee = shield entirely removed

Edit again

Found out that the SS teir 5 40% extra damage is based on total damage.

Gamemako wrote...

Just tested. 1290 listed damage (+65% SM / +50% SS) against a Silver Centurion. No stunner, no MA, no TC, electric sword evo. Immediate damage put him at 9 bars of health (lost all shield and 1 bar of health). After DoT, he had 5 bars of health remaining.

He has 1125/1240 HP. Assuming no other input, the 1290 listed damage would leave him with 1075 out of 1240 HP remaining. That's 86.7%, which rounds to 0.9 (9 bars of 10). That is, the electric evo is not factoring in at all.

After the DoT, according to your estimate, he would be at 835 HP, which is 67.7% -- rounding to 7 bars. This is clearly not the case. However, adding 40% to the total damage leaves him at 559 HP -- 45.1% of his base, rounding up to 5 bars.

So yeah, based on these numbers and previous testing, we can say without a shadow of a doubt that the final SM evo does nothing at all to SS and that the 40% bonus is based on total, not base damage.

in short
Silver Centurion  1125/1240 HP

SS with DoT Damage  - 5 Bars Health

Math says he should be at - 7 Bars Health

----

TL;DR
  • SM Rank 6 applies to normal/Heavy melee only. NOT SS.
  • TC is being double dipped from and causing extra damage.
  • SS teir 5 (40% extra damage) is possibly based on total damage.
Because Science!

You really shouldn't post these kinds of threads without video proof.

Same, I just couldn't be sure if I was doing any extra damage. Now I wonder if the Armor damage is broken...

I would but I don't have a video recorder for my xbox.
However, you have the abiltiy to try it out and post back on your findings

I was hoping it was just my imagination earlier, but I'm afraid you may be correct on this. I noticed that speccing into it had no effect on the damage I was doing to enemies with shields or barriers, but was thinking it may have been me just not paying attention before.

Video is overrated. I have never heard of a science journal that requires video proof. Just report your method and finds so we can repeat.

Edit:
It is possible that the rank 6 Sheild/Barrier and Armor Bonus doesn't apply to SS at all. I'll have to check my math.

Yeah, but why would you go for shield damage in the first place...?

Ability to one-hit kill almost every humanoid enemy without the need for melee equipment or gear?

Wait, so one of the spec increases in an ability doesn't work correctly?

Holy ****, I'm in shock. Never seen that happen before.

I tipically don't like to go for the heavy hitters since they normally can sync kill me. (happens too often *___*)
and almost everything has a shield so I wanted to be able to kill the small frys while my team dealt with the harder stuff.

How?
Cerberus: Two enemy with armor(Atlas and Turret)
Geth: Two enemies with armor(Pyro and Prime)
Reapers: Three enemies with armor(Ravager, Brute, Banshee)

Cerberus: Six enemies with shields/barriers(Atlas, Centurion, Engineer, Nemesis, Turret, and Phantom)
Geth: Six with shields(Hunter, Rocket Trooper, Prime, Pyro, Combat Drone, Prime Turret)
Reaper: Two with shields/barriers(Marauder and Banshee)

There are many more enemies with shields or barriers than those with armor. If you're playing against Cerberus, that armor bonus is only going to work against two units(and a turret might not even be put into play) while the shield bonus would affect five different units, minus the turret if it doesn't get set up. And the shielded units are much more common for all factions, with the armored ones appearing less frequently.

That, and armored enemies tend to have the strongest short range damage capabilities, putting the Shadow right into the kill zone for them.  Lighter shielded enemies tend to be focused more on ranged attacks with low health, making them ideal targets for the quick hit and run attacks of a melee Shadow.

I can't say for sure tonight I need another respec card but my data suggests the armor tree might not apply for SS either. I wonder if it works does for normal melee.

I knew it felt off. I'll still use it since the appearance of a shock sword synergies better with the other abilities of the phanto..I mean shadow. ... and I don't feel like repsecing.

- Does the Shadow Strike Energy Drain evo work correctly? I remember hearing it didn't somewhere.

Control - Sword Mastery - 3 points in SM - SS 1 point

Damage Pyro (shot off shields only with tempest) - 4 bars

Sword Mastery - 6 points in SM (no extra damage, Extra Armor Damage)

Damage Pyro (shot off shields only with tempest) - 4 bars

Science! <3

Anyway, OP needs to test melee attacks, not just SS. I would be curious to see if it is wholly broken or merely not affecting SS.
