I think the Sten had a good pronunciation when he spoke the Qunari tounge in DA:O.

But one thing that bothered me about the Qunari in DA2 was their language.
Why was the pronounciation so American? They are supposed to be a foreign people and yet they pronounce it in
one of the most common dialects of English. It really
grated my ears.

What do you think?

Dwarves and Qunari both have that very flat, American Midwestern accent, and I'm pretty sure it's *supposed* to grate.  They're very often harsh people, after all.

Mark Hildreth's (aka Sten's) pronunciation is very Midwestern American, he just has different vocal qualities from, say, the Arishok  (Rick D. Wasserman) and the few other Qunari with speaking parts in DA2.  Most of this is due to the fact that he was projecting a voice that's rather a bit deeper than his ordinary speaking voice--you can hear it the few times he shouts or speaks forcefully in the game, because his voice loses its deep resonant quality entirely.  (When he sings he almost sounds like Justin Timberlake.)

The Qunari (aside from the Arishok) in DA2 were speaking in their more natural voice, which allowed them to a.) speak more quickly and b.) speak more forcefully.  Both of those bring out the harsher aspects of the American Midwestern accent.

Oh, and it's not a *dialect*, it's an *accent*.  A *dialect* means that the vocabularies either have different meanings or that there are words present in common usage that are not used at all in one of the vocabularies.  They may even be mutually incomprehensible, whereas nobody has difficulty *understanding* Midwesterners because of their word choice.

Each group has a different accent.

The Elves sound Welsh/Irish.

The Humans of Ferelden sound vaguely English.

The Dwarves and Qunari kind of have American accents.

I'm guessing you're American and that's why you don't think the Qunari accent sounds foreign? That's exactly how I feel when I hear the Elves speaking.

Ah no. I don't have an issue when they speak English. I was referring to when they uttered things in the Qunari language, Qunlat. That's when it grated my ears. It sounded like when American actors are trying to pronounce words in Arabic or Russian. It sounded horrible.

Oh!  Thanks for the information.

Yeah, that's also a weird thing. Two different people, living far away from each other and for some reason they have similar accents?

Hehe no, I'm not American.
