How/when to play DLC campaigns and Awakening?

Could someone summarize the gameplay connections between the original DAO and the various add-on campaigns? Which ones use information from a DAO save? Do they use the actual character or just refer to the gameplay choices? Is there a recommended order? The modules' thumbnail descriptions aren't very explicit, and I'm reluctant to search too much as I don't want to inadvertently read any plot spoilers. A link to a spoiler-free page would be perfectly fine if one exists. I've completed the main game and the DLCs that run inside it, but haven't touched the external ones yet.

I'm guessing that Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles are entirely independent, apart from giving you a reward in the main game if you complete them. But the others (Witch Hunt, Amgarrak, and Awakenings) I'm not at all clear on.

The only order you can import your character in is: DAO->Awakening->Golems->Witch hunt.

Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles can be played at any time, but it is recommended that you complete Origins at least once before you play them as they contain spoilers (especially Chronicles). Not an issue if you have already done so.

Note that Awakening raises the level cap from 25 to 35.

^as @caradoc says. As for importation/gameplay; some choices made in the main game will reflect in your import to Awakening-Golems-WH, and of course, if your Warden didn't do the Ultimate Sacrifice, you continue playing as him/her. If your Warden is dead, Awakenings helps you set up a new Warden from Orlais, to play through the expansion followed by Golems, then WH. Hope that made sense.....have fun!

OK. Very helpful, thanks.

Then, from what I've read, you'll also carry over items on your Warden and in your inventory, but not any of the red-tinted DLC items - except for those from Return to Ostagar. Is that right? Seems very arbitrary that only RtO items carry over.

Do skills/talents/equipment for your companions matter at all for any of the campaigns? Or do you basically just strip the high-end unique equipment from them in order to have a better baseline?

Correct. Before you make the export save in Origins, select your favorite items and sell the rest. You can buy good items in Awakening (better than you have from Origins), but they cost a fortune so do take money with you. Also, you can make your own runes and buy respec tomes for yourself and your companions in Awakening.

All classes also get extra branches in their talent trees as well as new specializations (you have a chance to pick additional specailizations).

Edit: note that Awakening has a few known (quite nasty) bugs so be sure to keep several manual saves at hand.

I agree with the above comments. Chronologically, it's Leliana's Song, Origins, Awakening, Golems, and finally Witch Hunt. But my guess is that Leliana's Song would have greater emotional impact if played after getting to know Leliana and doing her personal quest in Origins. But it's independent from the continous storyline/character import of Origins to Awakening to Golems to Witch Hunt. The only impact it'll have on your Warden is access to the Battledress of the Provocateur.

As for transferring DLC from Origins to Awakening, you may have some luck with this mod.

Have fun!

For some reason, if you're on pc, the Helm of Honnleath (Stone Prisoner) transfers over. Everything else from Stone Prisoner and Warden's Keep doesn't, which means no Starfang, Warden Commander armor, or Harvest Festival ring for Awakening.

I've used the Harvest Festival ring, and Olaf's cheese knife (both stone prisoner items) in Awakenings. Warden-Commander armor dissapears though.

Golems, Witch Hunt, and Chronicles can be played between DAO and Awakenings, btw. I did that after my last DAO session because I didn't feel like playing Awakenings, and I hadn't done those three DLCs yet so I played them instead.

Yes, but you can't import from GoA or WH into Awakening.
