Subject: Colborn's inquiries

Sir,

I must warn you about Taliah Colborn's inquiries regarding our low-level indoc. field agents since last week. As I have painstakingly made clear in the past, her Psych office should treat only the higher-level agents. It would be a grave mistake to allow her anywhere near one of grunts -- especially the new recruits.

I must point out that Cerberus is at a crossroads now. As the war with the Reapers grows more and more difficult, several of our officers and specialists quit, even as our troop numbers swell. Should Colborn learn of the details behind our Indoc implants would she remain loyal?

She must be discreetly led astray. And if that proves impossible, she must be stopped right away.

Respecfully,
Dalit Lee, Director
Morpheus Station

Harbinger: How are you feeling today, Husk #7678 ?
Husk: Euuuh.
Harbinger: Fine. Back to duty.

Harbinger: Why exactly did you leave cover to run straight into a sniper's line of fire, Mr. Cannibal?
Cannibal: There was a corpse. I was hungry.

:P

K: That was it, doc. He hugged me. Held me tight, even as he slumped to the ground, my sword in his chest. His friends boarded the shuttle and went away. His last words were 'I got this, you go home'.

DC: Well, Kaoru, you took down a valued enemy operative. That's a victory right there.

K: That's just it, doc. The whole time that Paladin was sitting there? He was confident. He knew what was gonna happen and he was fine with it. Me? I was afraid. And I still am.

From: Dalit Lee, Morpheus Station Director
To: Chronos Station Executive Office
Subject: Nemesis Operative 3141 evaluation

Sir,

Enclosed you will find Taliah Colborn's most recent evaluation. She's interviewing Specialist Jenner, referred to as "Kathy" in Colborn's notes. Yes, THAT Specialist Jenner, from the Galbari debacle.

Again I strongly recomend taking action against Colborn's inquiries. This recording should provide sufficient evidence that she has ulterior motives.

Respectfully,
Dalit Lee, Director
Morpheus Station

[begin recording]

Orderly: Hey, doc. Long time no see. Are you alright?

Doctor Colborn: Hi, Andy. I took a sick leave, nothing serious. I'm quite alright now.

O: Great. Hey, um, your next patient is here. She's... a bit creepy, this one. You sure you don't want me around?

DC: Thank you, Andy, that won't be necessary.

O: I'll be staying outside just in case. Just call me if you need me, OK?

DC: Nothing to worry about, Andy. Just send her in.

[Colborn begins her own recording as the patient walks in]

DC: Good morning, "Kathy". Take a seat, please. How are you today?

"Kathy": Why, quite well, doctor, thank you for asking. I trust everything is well with you?

DC: Yes, yes...

K: I heard you were sick.

DC: You did...? Well, it was just a bad flu, nothing serious. I'm alright now.

K: That is good. I also worried I might be late. That orderly kept me under tight supervision. I like being punctual.

DC: You are quite sharp, Kathy. So, how do you feel about your last operation?

K: I am perfectly well, doctor. In fact, I do not see a reason why I should be here instead of on the field.

DC: Well, you were the sole survivor of a Cerberus operation gone bad --

K: It did not go bad.

DC: No?

K: No, indeed. That I was the last survivor is a mere detail. We succeded.

DC: You sound very sure of yourself.

K: Should I not be?

DC: Well, you held out for five straight days on an alien enviroment, with nothing but your rifle. In the end, the N7 Squad that killed your people found the alien artifacts you were guarding and --

K: Immaterial. I --

DC: ... and took away the artifacts. I wonder --

K: The Reaper artifacts are unimportant, doctor.

DC: Or so you claim. Kathy... I'm not your superior and this is not a debriefing. I'm here to see how that mission affected you.

K: Unnecessary, doctor. All that matters is that I now know how to defeat the Reapers. We are loosing precious time with this evaluation.

DC: [takes some notes] Well, Kathy. This evaluation is a necessary step before you get sent to the higher-ups with your report.

[silence]

K: Very well. What do you want to know, doctor?

DC: Tell me everything. From Omega to Galbari.

[Kathy nods]

K: So you know I've been to Omega. I see you did a little researching, doctor. That was classified information.

DC: You were part of a special team sent to the ruins of the Collector's base, didn't you?

K: I was. I swelled with pride when I was chosen to be part of that expedition. We rummaged for weeks in that desolation until we found the Reaper artifact cache we were sent to retrieve. Everyone was cheering up, since that meant we could go back sooner. It was when I found it... a Prothean data disc. Hidden in a forgotten corner of the ruined Collector base.

DC: A data disc? Did you show it to anyone?

K: No, of course not!

DC: Why not? Why not give it to your platoon commander?

K: Because... because they were acting strangely.

DC: How so?

[silence]

K: It is hard to tell. It comes with being a sniper, I guess. You must be aware of your surroundings, even as you keep your focus on the target. There were these... cues. As the days went on, I noticed several of my colleagues staring at nothing, or mumbling to themselves. One trooper ran amok the day we found the first Reaper artifact and I had to shoot him down before he did any more damage. But this was not the worst.

DC: What was the worst?

K: The officers, doctor. After we gathered all the artifacts, there was this sort of... calmness. The kind of calm that comes just before a massive storm. It lasted about three or four hours. There was a strange... how can I define it? A deep, low bass sound in the background. Everywhere. In our bunks, inside our EVA suits, in our comms... it was just there. And the officers... after we collected all the artifacts in our transport ship, the officers stood there for several minutes, like ones under a spell. They were not the same. I knew then something was terribly wrong. Then, as if nothing had happened, the low sound stopped and everyone was celebrating. Not me -- I avoided my fellows and found a quiet corner to think. It was when I found the data disc and hid it.

DC: After that your unit was sent to Galbari, yes?

K: Some weeks after our return, yes. At first I had not realized it had to do with our little expedition to the Collector base --

DC: Do you want some coffee, Kathy?

K: What?

DC: Do you want some coffee? I really need some coffee. Here, let me pour you a cup.

[Colborn pours some coffee]

DC: Now, you were telling me about Galbari. It was a Turian medical research center, wasn't it? What was your mission?

K: We were sent to seize their notes on Reaper research. A team from Project Morpheus came along with us, but I had no knowledge of their specific mission. All I know is that the base was heavily guarded. You would think the Turians would rather defend Palaven with everything they have, but a sizeable force was grounded in Galbari. We lost a lot of good men and women there, but took the base. I pride myself in firing the last shot, killing the Turian commander.

DC: What happened after?

K: The base was... not what I expected. They were running some tests on Reaperized Turian bodies. "Marauders", as we call them on the news. There were several dead Marauders in the laboratories, as well a some live ones... and a Brute.

DC: [Takes some notes] Please go on.

K: We were posted outside the main labs, guarding the work of the Morpheus team. I did not know what they were doing, but it is not difficult to deduce. Some of the Turian scientists were captured alive, as well as some soldiers. I heard one of my troopers commenting the prisoners were being sent to the labs and never returned.

DC: [Takes some notes] My god...

K: Is everything all right, doctor?

DC: Yes, yes... please continue. The N7 Special Ops arrived soon after, wasn't it?

K: No. The Reapers arrived first.

DC: What? That's not in my report!

K: Of course it is not. You see, doctor, my platoon was wiped out by the Reapers, not by the Alliance. That was the night after I decoded my Prothean data disc.

DC: What about it, though? How did you get access to it?

K: In my dreams I saw images. Felt emotions. Protheans assaulting the Collector's base. Anger. A sense of loss. I knew it could only come from my hidden data disc, that it was somehow comunicating with me. It told me how to defeat the Reapers once and for all.

DC: How?

K: There are specific frequencies they respond to. Radio, sound, everything. That's how they coordinate so well. If we manage to control these emissions, we can control all Reaper units! I then realized that was what the technicians of Morpheus Project were trying to accomplish in Galbari.

DC: Do you still have this data disc?

K: It is... hidden. For safety reasons, of course. I had to hide it, after what happened.

DC: What did happen?

K: I tried to contact the Morpheus leader and tell him what I saw. They wouldn't let me. Told me they were working on something too important to be interrupted -- red tape talk, basically. Then I... I...

DC: Yes?

K: I broke into the lab. Killed two technicians and stole their keycards. I saw what they were working in.

DC: What was it?

K: You... you do realize I did not tell this to anyone else, do you?

DC: Of course, Kathy. You can trust me. Our talk is completely confidential. That's why I'm not using your real name. Nothing we discuss here will be relayed to anyone else but the rest of the Psych evaluation team. We work to make you feel better, nothing more.

K: That is... that's... refreshing to know. I feel a little dizzy right now. I am... I'm sorry.

DC: Here, have some more coffee... now tell me, what did you see?

K: I broke into the lab as I told you... then I saw it... they were, the Morpheus people were... experimenting on Marauders. On the Turian captives as well. I saw the Morpheus leader talking about something about "corroborating Lawson's work", I do not... I don't know what he was talking about [wheeze].

DC: Lawson's work [takes some notes]. Go on, Kathy, go on. What else?

K: You seem... to be in a hurry.

DC: What did you see?

K: Could I... could I have something for this headache? Maybe we could talk later, I don't know.

DC: Tell me what happened next and we'll see about that headache.

K: All... all right. Some of the Reaper artifacts we got from the Collector's base was being modified to emit a signal. I just knew it. It was like I was being drawn to it. It was my data disc, maybe... at any rate, I killed the technicians working on it and...

DC: Why did you kill them?

K: I... I don't know --

DC: Did anyone, or anything told you to?

K: I don't know, I just --

DC: Did you hear any sort of voice?

K: I don't --

DC: Why did you kill them, Kathy, what made you decide to do it?

K: I DON'T KNOW! I just did it! It felt right doing it! I just had to --

DC: You just had to activate the signal emmiter, didn't you?

K: Y-yes... It would prove that my data disc was telling the truth. That I had the key to defeat the Reapers.

DC: And then the Reapers came.

K: I... I sneaked out out the labs after activating the emmiter. I just wanted to test it. To test it! The Marauder specimens responded to it, so I know I was doing the right thing. I was doing the right thing...

DC: The Reapers killed everyone. And you hid.

K: Are you implying... I didn't call the Reapers! They came out of nowhere, with no warning! They released our test subjects. I managed to kill quite a few enemy units but... but... I felt my disc had to be kept safe. So I just ran away and hid... no one, not even the Reapers can find me if I scuttle away and hide... I... I went to the swamps near the labs and just hid there. The Reapers sent troops after me, so I had to take them out... one by one... making every shot count. It was a nightmare, doctor. Three days and three nights, then silence. They had just left. I was all alone on Galbari for the next two days. I thought I was going mad... until a Cerberus search party arrived. They told me the base was destroyed by an N7 unit. But I knew the truth. I knew the truth.

DC [soothing] It is all right now, Kathy. It is all right. Here, I'll get something for that headache.

K: I don't even know why I'm telling you this. I should't. I should not. It told me not to trust anyone with this information.

DC: You did the right thing, don't worry.

K: I shouldn't. I shouldn't. It told me not to. The disc.

DC: Here, take this.

K: ... I shouldn't... unless... the coffee! You put something on my coffee, didn't you! You... you!

DC: Kathy, listen. You escaped from the Reapers. You recovered a crucial bit of information. You are a heroine!

K: I... I am...?

DC: You are. You even have a Prothean data disc. All you need to do right now is rest a bit. I'll recomend a leave for you, then you can go to the higher-ups and I'm sure you'll get a medal or something.

K: That would be... good.

DC: Andy! We're finished here. Take Kathy back to her room.

Orderly: OK, doc.

DC: And, Andy... [mumbles something, inaudible]

Orderly: You got it.

[Kathy leaves with the Orderly and Colborn turns her recording off. Minutes later he returns with a bundle]

Orderly: Is that what you needed?

DC: Yes. Thanks, Andy. I'm glad you were at the door. She was almost jumping on me.

Orderly: I told you she was creepy!

[Orderly leaves again. Colborn goes through the bundle and finds a strange-looking device]

DC: Now, Kathy, were you telling the truth, or were you dellusional?

[end recording]
