From the notes of Dalit Lee, Project Morpheus Director
Subjetc: Taliah Colborn interview
[begin recording]
[Doctor Colborn and Director Dalit Lee enter Lee's office]
Doctor Colborn: Let me begin by saying how much I apreciate your having me aboard, Director. Your installation is quite impressive.
Director Dalit Lee: My pleasure, doctor. Please, take a seat.
DC: Thank you.
DDL: While we not agree on many instances, there is no need for us to squabble. I understand your concerns about our troops, but rest assured we take their health - physical or mental - with the utmost seriousness. It's the fate of all humanity that is at stake, after all.
DC: I see. Yet, I must insist: Project Morpheus' psychological methods seem... unorthodox. I worry that this may prove deleterious to our troops morale in the short term. If you let me study your methods in depth...
DDL: As I have told you several times already, that will not be necessary. You are doing one hell of a job with our high-level troops. Cerberus needs you there. If you stop your work to study Morpheus' methods...
DC: "High-level troops", Director? Look, this is what I'm talking about. I've spoken - informally, of course - with several of our troopers serving as security on my own installation and they seem... off-key. A little disconnected, even. I don't know what is going on here, but I'm absolutely sure I need to learn more about the training of our soldiers.
DDL: I'm afraid we... [intercom chimes in] What is it? I told you I don't want interruptions, Roberta.
Roberta, over intercom: I'm sorry, Director. Someone's here to see you.
DDL: Well, I'm busy, damn it! Whoever it is, tell them to wait until I'm done with our guest.
R: Sir, I don't think...
[office door opens. The Illusive Man himself walks in, a woman in Phantom outfit by his side]
The Illusive Man: Thank you, Roberta, I think I can handle it.
DDL: ... Sir, I was hardly expecting...
TIM: I was by and decided to visit when I learned the good doctor was your guest. How are you, Taliah? It's been a while.
DDL: You... you are acquainted with her?
DC: And how are you, Sir? We haven't talked since Lazarus' demise. I hope my little debate with the Director didn't bother you. I know how busy...
TIM: Lee, I've know Taliah Colborn since work on Project Lazarus began in earnest. She was responsible for the psychological profiling on Shepard that showed Lazarus was viable. She is one the finest assets Cerberus has.
DDL: Well, that is... Um, doctor Colborn's qualifications were never an issue, Sir. I just thought...
TIM: You thought Taliah should not have access to our training methods. You are afraid she might disapprove of our Integration proccess.
DDL: That's not it at all. At all, Sir! If you read the reports I sent you these past months...
DC: Wait, you've been reporting on me?
DDL: Oh, cut the act, Taliah! Everyone here knows you've been snooping around. That stunt you pulled with Nemesis Operative 3141, for instance. Don't think for a minute that...
DC: You read my patient files? That's unnaceptable! How...
TIM: Enough, both of you. This bickering ends now. Lee, you said it yourself in your last communique: Cerberus is at a crossroads. This war grows more complicated by the minute. If we don't act in coherence at the administrative level, how can we expect to win this war and save humanity?
DDL: ...
TIM: Here's how it goes from now on: Doctor Colborn shall have unrestricted access to the Integration proccess and shall prepare psychological evaluations on our lower-level troops. Including the new recruits. You, Director Lee, will give her any support she needs for this job. And you, doctor, shall report directly to me.
DDL: ...
DC: That's... that's big, Sir. Thank you.
TIM: If you find yourself having any misgivings about our training methods, doctor, I expect you to contact me immediately. Be mindful, though, that this job may be tougher than you expect. Maybe even a little dangerous, all things considered.
DC: Dangerous? I don't...
TIM: The galaxy is collapsing around us, Taliah. You may not like a lot of things you'll see, but everything has a reason. If you are really serious about finding out how we train our troops for this conflict, you need to be prepared to inspect some of our field operations.
DC: Field operations?
TIM: Or you may walk away now and resume your regular work. But then I won't have you interferring with the Director ever again. Do you understand?
DC: Well. That's way more than I asked. Hell, it's a.... it's a big decision, Sir. I need some time to consider it.
TIM: Decide now. Either you are commited in full, or you go back to your office and shut up.
DDL: Sir, may I...
TIM: No.
DDL: [mutters and wipes a sheet of sweat off his brow]
TIM: Well?
DC: I'll... I'll take it. I want to know how we do things.
TIM: Excellent. Coordinate with Lee. You have a lot of reading to do before your next assignment. Miss Takeda, will you be so kind as to accompany the good doctor outside so that she may be given the proper clearances? She'll begin work immediately.
Phantom Operative Takeda: Of course, sir. And doc, good to see you again. I really enjoyed our sessions.
DC: Um, good to see you too, "Kaoru".
POK: Please, it's Keiko. No need for codenames now. We'll be working very closely from now on...
[Colborn and Keiko Takeda leave the office]
TIM: Now, Lee. We have a lot to discuss. But first, turn off the damn devices.
