Hey bioware, since the DLC came out I've been assessing the maps and seeing how they handle and I wanted to give my own thoughts. See if the community agrees.
Rio: Honestly, I like this map not for it's layout, but for it's symbol. When I read about how the new N7 characters were all trained at rio, I saw the "Kamino Effect" and thats why it's here.
For those who don't know, there are a few times in the star wars genre that deals with the clones and impending danger on the world where they came to be. Kamino. Most times where the clones are shown to be defending their home when it was in direct danger they are absolutely viscous. I feel this effect is why Rio was even included.
As for the map itself. It's an okay map, it was obviously tailored to the N7 because of the cargo area's tight corridors making the paladin-destroyer buddy team method nasty, the far corners where an engie can bunker down. The tight turns on several parts of the map that make the fury and the Shadow into deadly traps. But, like I'll explain below with london, there were a couple wasted opportunities.
Like the middle of the map for example where you spawn, that control room above, why isn't that open? It would have made a fan-tas-TIC sniping spot. Add in a single set of stairs to get up there and break out some or all of the windows so you can get easily flanked if your not watching and you have a fantastic spot to sit on platinum. Sure. If you played reapers you would get destroyed by the banshees and brutes racing up the stairs with marauders on your back, but still a great spot.
The other opportunity is the river below the map. I'm not sure about the others, but it would have been an awesome time to introduce environmental hazards. I'm seen my fair shair of enemies go down that central walk with rapids licking their heels. There should have been a switch to drop them into the water or something. Might have been really cool. Make it so that the bridge had a scanner or something that detected the players so the switch couldn't be activated or would cancel if they walked onto the bridge.
London: I honestly love this map. I loved the london part of the SP and this map is no different. You see the distruction first hand in one of the most iconic cities in the world and it's well rounded for all the classes. But again, I feel that there were some missed opportunities.
Because of the bridge in the middle, EVERYBODY flocks there most of the time. (Least everybody that I have played with) There should have been more than one large areas to go to, letting the players see more of the map. You can see a couple areas where you COULD get to if they were open. The areas wouldn't be perfect, but they would be great places. There is a building (Just left of the extraction zone) where, though it's open, it would be an excellent sniping spot. Let you see the whole map without being horribly exposed.
Vancouver: God I love this map. I have no complaints about this map what so ever. Fantastic sniping spot, fantastic hold out spots. I found this map to be perfect.
Now, for new maps, I think we should have something like firebase Giant and Dagger. More open and allow us to either fight inside or out. Let us go inside the buildings we're defending. Like with London, I think an area with lots of buildings to run between and into would be great.
More areas to go into would give a lot more diversity to the maps. With the engie, the maps we have now are a lot more...open, shall we say. Allows you to sit anywhere on any map. Especially so with two. Having maps that gave that same feeling, unlike London that has one dominant area. Like, for example, a map like I described above, streets to run from building to building, but with two or even three story areas. Allows for fantastic defense, but if broken you might be screwed.
I'll probably be editing this with more map ideas and posting other people's map ideas. Hopefully bioware will take our map Ideas to heart now that the DLCs are starting to come to a close.
