DA:O can be quite tough if you are not used to the combat system, your best bet is to lower the difficulty for the tougher fights.

I struggled the first time I played it too but subsequent playthroughs became much easier.

Don't worry, your age is definitely not the case. When I started playing DA:O after years of playing NWN, I found it very challenging, as well. Some boss fights seemed completely impossible. But I was too proud to lower the difficulty, so I kept dying and dying. But playing on Easy and learning what you need first is probably the best option. Also not so frustrating, let me tell you.

I recommend reading this post: http://social.biowar...877830#12883762 The poster there gives a load of useful tips. I'm sure there are other threads where you can learn further information about strategy. Tactics are very, very important.

What kind of characters do you have with you? What weapons are you using? I'm sure we can find a way how to make them more effective.

EDIT: So, I looked at Leske. (Haven't played any of the Dwarven Origins yet.) It's a rogue, which is great. Make sure to use Dirty Fighting a lot and position him behind his enemies.

Yeah don't worry too much about it. The first time I played I found the game challenging on normal difficulty. Needless to say some battles took a good number of tries and experimenting with skills/tactics until I managed to get pass it. But the sense of achievement was well worth it :)

Distributing your attribute points and skill allocation is very important in the beginning as it helps a lot. For a warrior focus on strength and a bit of dexterity in the beginning.

As for spells/talents focus on the ones where you can disrupt your opponent from fighting back. e.g shield bash (weapon + shield) or pommel strike (2 handed weapon)

Make sure Leske is set to attack the same enemy as your dwarf. When everyone attacks a different enemy, that usually leads to longer fights, with more healing needed.

Is this the fight against Beraht? I did this fight just the other day without too much trouble, as a rogue. Just go after one of the two minions, as to lessen their numbers, then go after Beraht last. Have Leske use dirty fighting to stun an enemy, and don't forget to use health potions. Also, try to make sure that Leske is able to backstab from behind the enemy for extra damage and a boost to melee accuracy.

Btw...a dwarf commoner warrior has dual weapon strike by default. They might not have shield bash, unless the talent was purchased manually. A dual wield warrior doesn't have many crowd control options; it's all about damage.

Thanks....i thought I'd be cheating by lowering the difficulty but now I'll try it..

I was going to find my earlier post, but I see it already linked - thanks Vanilka! :)

Much of that won't apply this early in the game, but will be useful later on. I remember my first playthrough, and it was also with a commoner dwarf, and I did find it challenging as well (I was playing a two handed weapon wielding warrior, which is probably, I would say now, not the easiest class.)

The "retreat to a better location" idea should work for the toughest battles, and if you are a rogue, then remember to try and position yourself behind the enemy. Since Leske is a rogue, you can position Leske on one side of the enemy, and you on the opposite side. This way, if the enemy attacks you, Leske will be dealing backstabs, and if the enemy attacks Leske, then (if you are a rogue) you will be dealing backstabs, and/or (if you are a warrior) not taking damage.

The game may take a little getting used to, before you get the hang of it. Don't be discouraged, the story is well worth it. If you are finding a particular battle truly impossible, switch the difficulty from the options down for the fight, and switch it back to where it was afterwards. (So as not to make the game too easy - it's supposed to be a bit challenging.)

One thing I would add is to remind you to use the TAB key, often. VERY often. As in all the time. It highlights objects and NPCs you can interact with, and without it, you'll miss out on a lot. Missing a lot of loot, for example, will mean having less stuff to sell, making less money, not being able to upgrade your equimpent as often, and maybe missing useful items and equipment - this, in turn, will make the game more difficult.

If you want a more specific analysis of what you may be doing wrong, post a little more info, like the class you are playing, what fighting style you are concentrating on, and what skills and atributes you've picked thus far.

I thought I was just stupid because I kept dying all the time, turns out that I was just waaaaaaaay too impatient. Just gotta take your time with tough fights, or turn the difficulty down if you're having too many problems.

I found I had the same problem as thepringle ^^^^ had on my first character playthrough. I was way too impatient and just didn't understand the fundamentals of the game. So, I quit playing it. I recently picked it back up again and am enjoying it. I've found that patience is key in DA:O. Biggest thing is, don't get discouraged, take your time and hone your fighting skill. Oh and just have fun!

@ttomm46: Don't worry buddy, like everyone said, dao can be very overwhelming to beginners. The first time I played pissed me off so much I didn't pick the game up for one year.
Just take your first playthrough slow and read all the tooltips and in-game tutorials. You just need to understand what each talent and spell is supposed to do, & some combat mechanics. Take your time, once you climb the steep learning curve, dao is very rewarding. Keep rocking bro.
