Hey all--I am running an ATI 3870 and had been beset by the ostegar crash and similar crashes throughout the game that could only be bypassed by underclocking my card in RivaTuner. Obviously this got old fast, and didnt wanna underclock my card for the sake of one game....so I walked away. But today the ATI 9.12 catalyst patch came out and has COMPLETELY REMOVED the issue for me. So far. Heh. So update away, fellas, and lemme know if this is fixed once and for all.
Possible NON UNDERCLOCKING fix for ATI crashes

should probably have made the fact that the new driver is out as the topic of your thread.

The way the new driver effects the users of the game who have this problem is fixing the issue....so what is wrong with the title.

9.12 did not fix it for me. I've played through the Dwarven noble intro and the game breaks at various points in Ostragar, commonly in dialogue and, as far as I recall, only after or in the process of accepting the initiation from Duncan. I say "breaks" because it seems to do something different every time: straight freeze, freeze to black, crash to desktop, odd exception where I could keep moving around for a bit, VPU recover, spontaneous restart, and once it was even kind enough to corrupt my drivers such that Windows couldn't recognize my graphic cards. Oh, and the DA Launcher crashed once for good measure.
I'm running Windows XP on an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz with 4 GB DDR2 and 2 x Radeon HD 3870s in CrossFire (though I've tried without it), so I'm sure it's the same problem. I had first crashed after I installed the DLC, so I disabled it, reverted to an old save, played to Ostragar, and made it through even fewer conversations than before (this time, I went straight to Duncan, whereas previously I had talked to him last). Presumably the saves themselves haven't corrupted, but I'm running out of options. Fresh installs on everything and failure on all fronts. My last resort is to try the underclocking, which I'm going to do now. I never post for tech support, so this is definitely not in my court! Please hotfix as soon as possible!

It sounds like your bug is a little different than the one effecting a ton of ATI users--the screen goes black, a 'no signal' or whatever your default monitor message is appears, and the only out is a hard reset, never a VPU message or any error crash. But I'm sorry the driver update didnt help you =(.

That is usually what happens, but I had all sorts of things go wrong originally. I underclocked the primary GPU to 85% and was able to play for quite a while, but now I'm getting the same thing in the Brecilian Forest. I suppose it was too much to hope for a fix this soon...

I've seen problems caused by other TSRs (old DOS term, Terminate, and Stay Resident)
My
game was working fine one night, the next day it was crashing to a hard
rest. The only that had changed was I installed CleanMem and Rivatuner.
Not knowing which was causing the problem, I uninstalled them both and
the game worked fine again. Since I dislike having to press the reset
button, I never ventured farther to find out which one caused the
problem.
Try disabling anything that loads to the system tray, like mouse utility (Logitech's setpoint) Video driver resident program (ATI's CCC)
Try as well as possible to make sure nothing useless to playing the game is loaded in memory before you start DA:O
Yes, it should play nicer with memory resident utilities, but it doesn't

9.12 will fix it, a bit..
It still crashes from time to time, but you can play.. Longer..
I got an improvement from 5-10 second crash, to 40-50 minute crash.

9.12 drivers didn't work for me either. The only thing that 'sometimes' works for me is loading the save point in windowed mode and then switching back once it's running fine again. But this has only worked maybe once in every twenty hard crashes. The frustration is building but I'm just going to wait to play this until one of these companies decides to fix this.

It's not just the card themselfs..
Some people dont have these problems with these cards, but they use diffrent CPU's and RAM.
Perhaps a bad combination of hardware is what's really causing it.
Once i get back my server compy, i'm gonna throw in my HD 3870 and see if that makes any diffrence.
I wouldnt expect a fix from these devs anytime soon.
Just look at Funcom & Age of Conan.. It took them 1 year to fix the ATi Problems.
Edit:
And looking at the PatchNotes that they have released.. it doesnt seem like they're focusing on critical bugs.
But mostly on game balance.
Edit2:
Oh, and the fact that they dont even care about us (no response to the ATi Crashes for even a month.) says a lot. (no fix.)

I'm have the same problems.. crashes, "No Signal" message and whatnot.
Also, after each crash my computer won't load past the windows splash screen unless i leave it off for at least 5 minutes. Using a 3870 and haven't had problems with any other game.
Tried installing 9.12, but the installation keeps failing. It half-way worked after i uninstalled all outdated drivers, rebooted, and tried to install again.. but CCC always fails on start-up.
Anyway, here's to hoping we get a fix soon. :/

Yeah 9.12 doesn't fix the problems at all. And like Zethell said, i'm starting to lose hope in a fix the way Bioware seems to be acting about it.

The only solution I've been able to get working is by underclocking both my GPU and card memory by about 100mhz. Initially I tried underclocking but apparently not by enough. I'm using the 9.12's and it makes no difference. Apparently it's not just an ATI/AMD problem. There have been NVidia cards giving the error as well it seems.
Looks like we're not going to get any communication from Bioware. I guess they sold enough copies of the game that they no longer care about us and have moved on to "bigger and better" things. I hope most of you remember this when Mass Effect 2 and Star Wars The old Republic come out.
I don't have this problem with any other game. This is totally unacceptable!

I have a 5870, and have the exact same problem. The only temporary fix that I have found id using ATI CCC to set the fan to 100%. This seems to fix the problem in the fact that it crashes less often.
Also when it crashes it crashes to desktop, but then all programs that I open do not work or give error messages so I have to do a hard restart.

Long story short, had the same issue:
game would crash due to memory leak in 10-15 min
memory leak made me restar windows every time this happened
i have a beautiful laptop capable of running other hightech games etc.
What worked for me, after SEVERAL (about 3 or4 times) uninstalling of ATI drivers and the CATALYST tool, (with driver sweeper or something), ive managed to run the game for about an hour without problems, and to my surprise it was a conflict between drivers, all i can do is show you my stats... hope I can help some of you, if it works please spread the word to other ATI users. Anyway I really think those issues (memory leak, and CTD happen due to a conflict between drivers)

I've got a ASUS laptop with a ATI 5870. DAO ran good on original drivers - no lock ups at all, but WinDVD would not run. Upgraded the drivers - now WinDVD is running good and DAO crashes. Why would changing drivers cause a overheat issue? Sounds like a ATI driver issue to me. Anyway, now what? Choose which I want to run? This doesn't seem right!
