Conversation Lag

http://social.biowar...8/index/8744640. I thought it might be a mod issue but the irregularity of the lag is making tracking down a particular mod troublesome. I also thought about going S.L.I. with another graphics card- does this game support this?
My system:
AMD Phenom II X4 975 3.6Ghz
8 GB R.A.M.
NVIDIA GTX 460 With 1 GB R.A.M.
Sould Blaster X-Fi Go! Pro!
Windows 7 Ultimate 64- Bit

1. Have you installed the 1.05 patch?
2. Have you installed the latest nVdia GeForce drivers? (I'm runnig 304.48 beta with excellent results.)

2.) Got the game through Steam so it's fully patched to 1.05- I did, however, have the exact same problem with the disk version.
3.) Just checked for updates through NVIDIA Control Panel. Right now it's at 301.42 with no updates available. Where can I get these beta drivers and would they support my card?

With those specs, you should be able to run the game fine. Sounds like a mod issue.

LOL! Yeah, looking at that list, mod issue fer sure.
Perhaps you could be more specific?

The only true way to test if this is a hardware versus software (mod) problem is to do a complete uninstall of the game, reinstall a pristine copy, patch it, and see if you have the same issue. Unfortunately, the fact that you have so many mods means your previously saved games may not be usable (you'll get a "Force Load" message to override the missing mods, which can lead to other problems).
From a hardware standpoint, it's important to note that, unlike other games (such as Mass Effect, which uses the Unreal 3 Engine), DA:O uses its own engine and is very CPU-intensive. Also, while it makes use of multi-core CPUs, it does not do so very efficiently. Going the SLI route, to essentially plow your way through large chunks of graphics data may not work. The only solution would be to clean up the game completely (the aforementioned uninstall/reinstall) and add mods back one at a time, testing after each addition. A laborious process, to say the least....

It's impossible to be specific; by their very nature, mods have unpredictable (and largely untested) effects on the game.

Fairly sure it's not a hardware problem as this problem has persisted across two different formats (Disk version to Steam version.) and an almost completely different rig. The only components that have remained since I first started playing are the case, power supply and the hard drives. I'm already planning on getting a new power supply- not only for the S.L.I. but also to assist in overclocking the proccesor. Might a solid state drive help with this?
I was hoping to avoid your mod testing solution, which I knew was the next step anyway. Is it at all possible that it's not a single mod but rather the combined strain on the engine?
I'm going to start a new game with only a few select mods and see how that goes. I've had this problem since I first started playing so if it is a mod that drastically reduces the number of options.

No, I can't say an SSD will help. I suppose the game may run faster overall, but any mod-created lag will still be there. I am pretty darn sure what you're experiencing is mod-related. BTW-- some users have reported that overclocking actually causes *more* lags and crashes of the game. It's finicky that way.

Sure. And since you have so many mods, it could also be that one or more of them we're never tested using the latest patches.

I hope that works. Just keep in mind that the only way to remove the effects of some mods *for sure* is to uninstall/reinstall the game.

What I did notice is that with mods installed the game used up over two gigs of memory. I know this because I checked when it started lagging. With no mods installed, where I encountered no lag, the memory usage never went much over one gig.

In my next playthrough I'll try to remove some mods, but I'm really not sure it's caused by a mod because of the randomness of this problem (as you remarked). And I don't use many mods.
The mods we have in common are :
(All the DLCs)
Advanced Tactics
Make Console Commands Visible
Morrigan and Zevran restoration fixes
A similar game mechanism fixpack, but not the same. This one : http://dragonage.nex...ds/2053#content
Respecification
Other mods I'm using :
Custom number of Tactics slots
Ser Gilmore as a recruitable NPC
And that's about all.
My hardware specs are far above the recommended ones (Core i5-3570K, 8 GB of RAM, Radeon HD 7870). And that's on Windows 7 64-bit too.
And upgrading your system (SSD, second graphics card) would be useless for this problem !

Hi, I have the same problem, though not as bad as described in your first post. The game begins stuttering after some time, but it can vary a lot : a few minutes, 15-30 minutes, or 2 hours ! Other times it runs fine. This is especially noticeable during conversations (but for me the conversation options come up smoothly). If you do a search on these forums about "stuttering", you will find many results with people discussing the same kind of issues...

I did a test run with absolutely nothing but the base game installed and couldn't get it to stutter/lag. Granted I was skipping all of the conversations/cutscenes in the inital errors to get to the later ones. With a Human Noble start I notice the lag starting up around the Kokari Wilds.
In that run I played for awhile and then quit and added in a few mods, played some more then quit and added more mods and so and so on. I couldn't get it to lag and I did two of the main missions. I think this might be because I was restarting so often, which I've noticed in the past temporarily solves the problem. This also seems to be the solution for memory leaks.
I've since started a serious playthrough will all my stuff installed. I turned on TrilinearFiltering & TripleBuffering in DragonAge.ini- not sure they actually do anything, but I'm desperate. So, far just finished Ostagar and I only got some very minor stuttering during The Joining.
As for upgrading that I was going to do that even before I started replaying this game. And frankly there's every chance it could help given that I've yet to see someone conclusively nail down a cause. Although if it is a memory leak I don't think anything can be done as far as I'm aware.
