 Hurlocks- way better in DAO. Worst thing in DA2 is the "hats"

Genlocks- I actually like the Genlocks from Legacy, altough evolution must be happening over night in Thedas, since they look like a totally different species just 4 years after the blight.

Ogre- I actually think the ogre in DA2 looks quite good. I don`t think purple was the right color for the ogre in origins. Let`s call it a draw, both look good.

Emissary- Way better in origins

Genlock Alpha- DA2. Good to  see someone with as shield actually using it!

Hurlock Alpha- Origins, but i liked the one in Legacy as well. But it`s just something about the helmet on the hurlock alpha in origins.

Strongly disagree.

Personally I think the Darkspawn need a more "corrupted human" look to them (and so on with the other races). They can keep the spiky armor though.

Here's one of the creatures from Pandorum, I think it's a good guideline imo:

 Hurlocks - Don't like their armour, except for the Kettle Helmets. Too few games have those. Also not too big a fan of                      their teeth and skin, too clean. Oh, and they walk funny. Their Alpha is awesome, though.

Genlocks - Great, except the Alpha should be sized down a bit.

Shriek - Don't really like the ones from DA:O nor DA2...

Ogre - Looks good, I like the pale skin better than the purple.

Emissary - Too bdsm-ish. They should be like DA:O, were they were just normal darkspawn with magical powers,                          not a species on their own.

Get rid of those stupid hats the hurlocks wear, and then we'll talk perfection.

Using the broadest possible definition of perfection, that is. To each their own though, right?

 And the Alphas and Emissaries are also better designed. Ogres are different, but I don't have a preference one way or the other. The only weak point, in my opinion, is the Hurlocks. They're a bit too... cartoony? Not bad, mind you, just feel like DA:O had better Hurlocks. But all in all, I agree. I like DA2's Darkspawn better.

I have to disagree.

The first time I saw the ogre in dao my mouth dropped open and I said...omg I am so going to die. The first time I saw one in da2 my mouth dropped open then...I laughed. I don't think that was the intended re-design effect.

I don't like the new hurlocks at all. Uniform armor and too pasty. In dao everything had a thrown together shoddy armor look and some sort of tribal almost appearance...not so anymore.

But eh...

Ugh, I forgot about Shrieks. Yeah, I don't like either design, frankly.

hmmm... I might approve of the new Hurlocks, but only if they had these traits:

1) More bloody, dirty, tainted, and less shiny white
2) Had different noses (some being torn or ripped), and have some who have the original Hurlock type nose
3) wore armor that actually looks like the original Darkspawn armor, or something that looks half-assed.
4) had sharp teeth again
5) had monstrous tattoos again
6) lose their hair. That made them look more like Uruk-Hai for me, so the hair needs to go.
7) appeared in high level of detail on all platforms.
8) The Hurlock Emissaries -- since I remember Bioware saying all we would see in DAII's base game were Hurlocks and Ogres -- need to drop the S&M gear on the face and the pointy ears.
9) Seeing the Disciples again

and to go even further

For Ogres, they need:

1) Less mushed up face
2) Completely gray or completely purple
3) Soulless eyes
4) A return to the DAO teeth that they had. There is a difference between the two sets of teeth
5) Some Ogre Emissaries would be nice, as would some Ogre Disciples.

For Genlocks:

1) Tinker around with the color scheme. Most people would like them to not be beige. Me? I couldn't care less about their color. I love the new design. The Genlocks in Origins were the only ones that needed an overhaul, and the new design works
2) Make the Genlock Alphas taller than regular Genlocks like they are now, but smaller than Hurlock Grunts. Or just make the Hurlock grunts taller than the Alphas, and the Hurlock Alphas are also given a height boost.
3) Bring back Genlock Emissaries. Since the Darkspawn use the taint in their bodies to use magic -- per a DG post somewhere on here I believe -- there's no issue with Genlock Emissaries.
4) Genlock Disciples would be awesome.

For Shrieks:

1) a return to the DAO style (color scheme and sharp teeth included)
2) drop the protrusions from the old style
3) move the ears down
4) give them a more elf-like body. Looking at the old design, they seem to have pointed feet, while the new design has more normal-esque feet.
5) make their heads more narrow and have less of a giant forehead.
6) Give us some Shriek Emissaries.
7) Shriek Disciples would be great.

Side note: I really wish I could wear the armor the Withered wears.

I don't get all of the hate directed at the new darkspawn, seeing as how they just looked like Muppet Orcs in DA:O. So what if they look like goblin juggalos in DA II?

And honestly, isn't there something better to argue about? The Darkspawn were the worst thing about DA:O, clichéd both visually and conceptually. The Blight was just an overarching excuse plot that sends us around Ferelden so we can get involved in the much more interesting sub-plots (Nature of the Beast, Paragon of Her Kind, Landsmeet) and I don't think anyone that isn't breathlessly rubbing themselves with Tolkien memorabilia would disagree.

And why is it that when people see an unpopular opinion, they assume it's a troll? Do you all seriously come onto these forums to talk to people that all share the same opinions? The only requirement here is to be a fan of Bioware (at some point, I honestly don't know why some people stick around when all they do is whine and nostalgia), not that you have to all like the same aesthetics, stories, or gameplay mechanics.

Just to play contrarian the new hurlock look does have potential

It could probably be enhanced if they did follow TEWR's criteria

But darkspawn aren't corrupted humans. It's impossible to turn a human male into a darkspawn. Corrupted humans are called ghouls.

Darkspawn are a race of their own.

They may be a race of their own, but they do each have their specific analogues in Thedas.

Hurlock = Human
Genlock = Dwarf
Shriek = Elf
Ogre = Qunari
Emissary = Mage

Coincedence?

Don't knock the new Hurlock Alphas. They were more visually impressive than their predecessors, who were hurlocks that wore better armor than the other hurlocks.

AH MAKER NO THEY'RE MORE FASHIONABLE

The Darkspawn when from Lotr to Silent hill in some retrospectives, I preferred Lotr, they look more suited for the horde.

This image as is would make a decent human male Ghoul type enemy.

Though I should probably edit my criteria a bit, because I also want the Disciples to remain relatively unchanged. Though if done right, my criteria might improve the new type of Hurlock -- blegh -- whilst keeping the Disciples the same as they were in Awakening or just changing them slightly, depending on which ones we saw (assuming Bioware wanted to give them all variety in appearance).

Seriously, doesn't get much better then this:

darkspawn come from broodmothers which are made from human/dwarf/elf females.

They don't recemble dwarves anymore, but i approve of the new design as they make more varied combat available.

Hurlocks just look like monkeys, they are not improved.
As posted further above neither are the new emissaries.
Posted Image  This alpha looks like an alpha, the armor represents its superiority.

The old ogre is so much cooler too, doesn't look like a overgrown horned Gorilla.

And i miss the shrieks.

Lies! Posted Image They resemble the Dwarves just fine IMO. Remember, the taint seems to distort the size of a Darkspawn in relation to the race they spawned from -- seeing as how Ogres are 20 feet tall and twice as jacked as a Kossith who are 8 feet tall give or take. And the Genlocks seem to be even stockier then Dwarves.

Definitely agree about the Ogre. DAO's Ogre is infinitely superior.

DA2 Darkspawn are far from perfect but they're much better than the Mudspawn, imo. Make the DA2 Darkspawn appear more disease ridden (and in the case of Genlocks, look like dwarves) and it's perfect.

After Awakening, I expected so much more from the darkspawn. Where were the Disciples struggling with sanity and identity? I felt the DAII darkspawn were a disappointment in design (I used mods for detail on most and to replace the ogre with the armored ogre of awakening) and relevance. The battle of Mages and Templars took the place of a villain because there was not enough of Meredith for me to care about her, and even she could probably be described as an anti-hero, and that was very unsatisfying compared to the more tangible and imposing villains of the Archdemon (who seemed to have an agenda until it was revealed to be the cause of (spoilers) in awakening) and the Mother. I miss the "unknowable" darkspawn. Awakening promised me that everything we knew about them was about to change and that more was on the horizon ... And then they were dropped like an old boot until Legacy (which was a great DLC). My two cents, as spoiler free as I felt was necessary, but correct me if I've revealed too much.

I dunno, if I saw a Genlock Alpha barreling towards me with a shield that huge, I might be pretty freaked out.

The Genlocks Gremlins of Origins on the other hand, those are things I'd just laugh at. They didn't frighten me.
