Hi All.   For the second time in a row....I'm REALLY REALLY stuck.  Nearing the end of Act 3, I'm on my way to The Gallows, just after Anders obliterated the snot outta the Chantry....I've killed the first wave of Fadeshears and Templars (having finally decided to side with the mages after sitting on the fence for a long while).  The one part I just can't get past is when the HUGE HONKING Pride Demon swarms my party with various other demons and the two mages near the edge of the water.  There's just way tooo many of them, and I'm playing on the Casual setting!

I've got more than three dozen Health Potions, 14 Stamina Drafts, 16 Lyrium bottes.  My party consists of Varric, Anders, Carver (having returned from the Wardens) and myself as a hybrid  Elemental, Spirit-Healing Force Mage (Level 20).  I have tried the "pause & plan" strategic approach to give me time to issue orders and heal various characters....But there's just too damn many demons.   I don't know what to do!  What do I focus on first?   The HUGE thing or the zillion other pride demons?   I've tried to youtube it so that i can get an idea of strategy, but so far I can't find anything.

This was the same spot I got frustrated with last year and wound up just deleting the whole game off my computer because I was so frustrated with it.  But now I am determined to play it through to conclusion.....I just really need help with this part!    PLEASE!!!!

You are at a little lower of a level than I would normally expect, but it is still doable. If you have the ability to respec any of your companions, then I would suggest taking a look at some of the builds that others have posted (there are some really good ones on here.) If you aren't in a position to respec, then try the following. Again, try and have you and your team stay as far away from the Pride Demon as you can, till you take care of the other adds (if possible). (oh, and if you are having difficulty controlling your companions, check out some of the Tactics posters have suggested on these threads. At the very least, make sure that Varric and Anders are set to Ranged, and Carver to Aggressive.)

First off, do you have "Dog"....if dog is available, remember to call him forth. Second, I'm a big fan of getting the Blood Mages out of the way first. If you have Horror, cast it on one of the blood mages, and if Anders (or you) have Petrify, use that to lockdown the mages. One key thing is to keep a distance from the Pride Demon; if you do catch it's attention before you are ready, throw Gravatic Ring right underneath it. That should hold it for a bit, and might set dog on it as well. Cast Winters Grasp on a Blood Mage, and have Carver Scythe in two said mage (hopefully you have Winters grasp upgraded to take advantage of the CCC (cross class combo). Keep hitting the mages till they fall.

In the meantime, make sure to place Varric closer to the stairs you come down. If you haven't had him setup with a Poison yet, give him one (I prefer Deathroot, Debilitating and Arcane). The shades will be everywhere, so wherever they are clustered, have Varric use Raining Arrows (or whatever the name is..hehe). Also, Miasmic Flask works on shades, so again, any that are clustered, have him throw that at them. If the Shades aren't causing to many problems, then save Pinning Shot for either the BM or the Pride Demon. You and Anders should be able to start removing the Shades as soon as the BM is dead. Always keep an eye on the Pride Demon though, and send Carver over to start dealing with him. Another great spell that works fantastic on Shades is Cone of Cold. Kite the Shades a bit, and see if you can get them clustered; once they are run in close and use Cone of Cold. Some will die outright, and others will be slowed to a crawl. Once the coast is clear (or clear enough), start focusing all your most damaging spells and Varric's arrows on the Pride Demon.

Hope this helps, and if not, maybe some of the experienced players that post here regularly, will chime in. Happy gaming! :)

hmmm.....Okay, I am going to make a radical suggestion, but maybe it is time for it. Do you have a Save BEFORE you head to the Gallows to start the "Last Straw"? If yes, then I am going to suggest you go back to it and do a few things before the Gallows. Namely, if you have the Black Emporium, get some Maker Sighs, and respec your team. Check out some of the Build Threads to setup your team to optimize their abilities. If you DON"T have The Black Emporium, then at the very least, go to your Estate, and make the following: Mythal's Favor (at least 4), Rock Armor (again, at least 4), Fells Grenade or Combustion bombs. Debilitating Poison, Arcane Poison, Deathroot Poison get at least a couple a piece (as a mage, I like using the Arcane Poison...same with any other mage team member.)

Try and keep most of your party focused on the same enemies.....don't spread them out in this fight. The BM's and Adds will go down quicker that way, and then you can focus all your might on the Pride Demon. Also, the only real good force spell to use (except on the BM's) is Gravatic Ring. So use it for crowd control and clustering. This fight IS one of the most challenging fights, so don't feel bad. It can be a true headache (as you have found out). Also, what kind of armor/trinkets are you wearing?

Some good advice from coldwetn0se above
Its been awhile since I fought this boss but by the sounds of it I think your tactics and Strategy could be a bit off.

- If you have the Black Emporium DLC go back to a previous save and buy 4 makers sigh potions

- Check out Suicidal Babys tactics and builds below for your companions
.social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/305/index/6699754/1

- Prioritize what you want to attack first. In this case the Blood Mage

- Have plenty of potions, posions and such at the ready

Good morning all....Thank you all for your suggestions. I am going to act on every one of them as much as I can. Starting with the Black Emporium. To answe Coldn0se's question yes I hav the Black Emporium and all the CE content; my staff is The Tiger's Tail, I'm wearing Malcom's Behest, The Belt of Hindsight, Megan Vehal's locket.... I forget the names of the boots, gloves and cowl... will check back......But buying poisions is a good idea, never thought of that!

Question though: If I side with the Templars is there any change to this battle? Or the battle at large? Does the game play out any differently? Cuse I might just overwrite this save with an earlier one and start again.....Thanks though!

No changes for this fight. There are differences in the Gallows fights, but you need to get that far first. B)

First question, nope. The OTHER battles before the Pride Demon one, yeah, you don't have the fight the Templars.

No you get to the same conclusion at the end...just different ways of getting there.

If you side with the Mages, you chill out with Orsino , fight some Templars, then you have to go through the Gallows (fighting demons along the way) to get to Meredith.

If you side with the Templars you're with Meredith first, and travel through the gallows fighting demons to get to Orsino (then back to Meredith)

I DID IT!! I DID IT! HAHAHAHA! I did it! *jumps out of chair and does a happy dance*

Thank you all so much for all of your hints/tips/tactics etc.....

After 19 hours of hanging my head against a brick wall..... I did it!

I found that changing my tactics for each character really helped, and as you all suggested I worked on the blood mages first.......Then before I knew it the Pride Demon had like a 10th of its health.....and then...well, you all know that saying "The bigger they are the harder they fall".....Again I wanna thank everyone who posted such helpful comments!   You guys rock!

*Please do not post any more comments to this thread, as I am now considering it CLOSED

Darn...I was going to suggest sending dog+Aveline after the shades and the pride demon, while your ranged fighters fight from the stairs near the entrance so they don't get surrounded, and if you see the pride demon's vortex attack start, move Aveline out of the blue circle. Congrats on the victory.

I don't have DLCs but i can beat them in vanilla

1. get away from the "spirit trap vortex" from the pride demon. do not fight in it. when seing the vortex, lure the pride demon out

2. kill those shades first, sent your tank to make the pride demon busy

3. if you have bombs, use them, that should take care of those shades. make sure each character have bombs, they all can use

4. If you have Templar spec, or from your companion, silence the pride demon

5. if you have dispell, use it

6. Varric is powerful at end game, use him to harass the pride demon

Is this a troll ? I beat this on nightmare first try. Make your tank get all of them and just make the shades get stuck in the Pride's crushing prison circle. 1 warrior 2 mages 1 archer easy. I can not believe you cant do it on casual.

Is not a hard fight once you get the hang of it but I struggled with it when I sided with Templars and didn't have Anders healing me.

After you manage to get all the shades and trash out, attacking what is left of the 2 mages and pride demon is not hard. Just requires a lot of running around and healing, rezzing people.

Merril + Anders using improved chain lightning and tempest = a lot of dead shades also on nightmare.

Just aggro everything with aveline and then start AoE spells, not very hard.

A properly built DW rogue will burn down the mages and the pride demon very fast, just use some CC from your mages.

I feel badly for this person- lol. This fight took me FOREVER, I just had to kite the whole thing till I learned a few tips for the stupid shades.

Try leaving Anders, one mage is ok, and use Aveline. She is pretty resistant to enemy attacks, often I won a fight thanks to her... she's always the last going down.

Also try to attack the main Demon first with all Party Members, then send 2 members for each minion.

I found this fight hard too... but made it this way...
