As per the rules, before I begin, here are the system details, I believe this is everything I need.

I am running the digital download version of the game, I bought the game yesterday.
System Details

           * AMD Phenom ™ II X2 555 Processor 3.20 GHz with 4.00 of Ram
           *Nvidia GeForce GTX550 Ti
           * Nvidia High Definition Audio and Realtek High Definition Audio
      Configuration Utility | Platform Tab
           * Windows 7 64-bit OS
           * DirectX11
Okay, now to the issue I have been having.  Similar to other people, I have had the fade to black loading... imagery, only mine happens on the Deep Roads Expedition Quest, after the (SPOILERS: fight with the rock abomination demon), right before the big open chasm past the pathway after it, with the reddish pillars.  It has done this multiple times, even after downloading patch v1.04.  When the fade to black happens, the game will soon after freeze and I will either have to bring up the task manager to exit and have the game finish the crash or it will eventually crash on its own.  The middle of the screen will have the mouse go from the larger pointer in the game to the normal white pinter in the middle of the screen, where the "Dragon Age 2 has stopped working" box would appear.

From diving into the forums the only workaround I have seen is the hitting of the [ESC] button once the fade to black and loading... begins, but it has not fixed the issue at all; I have even tried tapping the button or just hitting it once, the most it has done has taken me out of the game screen completely.  I have tried restarting my computer and the only other I dea I have thought of is uninstalling and reinstalling it (again.  I already had an issue with a bad install where the game did not install correctly so I had to spend four hours to install it again when I first purchased the game). I have also tried tweeking my graphics and video setting (even moving everything to lowest graphics setting and an going to direct x9), but that did not work either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, I have not added any mods to the game, the only additions have been the official patches (I don't even have any dlc installed).

How many different nVIDIA drivers have you tried? Which ones? Please, let's NOT hear "the latest", which is a meaningless answer.

Um, I have tired only the latest one I have installed, from 2/29/2012, called version 8.17.12.9610

Edit: whoops, thought there was an error with my first post, accidently ended up double posting, sorry.

Edit 2: To make this post more helpful, I rolled back to the previous version, version
8.17.12.7061 and I still have the same issue.

Edit 3: Also tried restarting the whole mission from before you go into the deep roads and changing who was in my party to see if it was a specific glitch for a character, and nope.

nVIDIA drivers are totally unpredictable in this game. Have you tried running the segment in Dx9 instead?

Otherwise, I'd say to try a recent driver.

I've tried running it in Dx9 (as in, I switched it to Dx9, loaded up the specific scene, and tried to continue. It did not work). How can I get a more recent driver, as my computer tells me that 8.17.12.9610 is the most recent version for the driver. I found the 301.42 GeForce R300 Driver which says it is compatible with my Nvidia driver (I searched Geforce 500 series of models on their website and pulled it up). I guess I can try updating to it after my game reinstalls.

You should know better than to believe Microsoft. They are six months behind on everything. Go direct to nVidia and try the last couple of drivers after the one you have now. Ever since they had to follow the AMD Radeon lead on graphics with the Geforce 8n00 generation, they've had to play catch-up on drivers, and they now supply bad ones so often that I gave up and pulled out all Geforce cards from all PCs.

They may be blazing fast, but the speed's useless when the drivers are not compatible with half of the games people are playing.

So after reinstalling the game, updating to the latest patch again, updating to the most recent driver, and running Direct X9 again I managed to get through it and fight the Ancient Rock Wraith, which is what the game was failing to load. Dunno if the issue would pop up again, and I'm not sure which thing I did fixed it, but it is now fixed, at least for that scene. Thanks for the help Just-Me! You were awesome!

Maybe, but it did not work the first time I tried it, so meh. I thought they had fixed the Direct X11 issues with the latest patches?
