'Orlais has brutally occupied Ferelden, its rather logical that the Fereldans perceive Orlaisians as cruel people.

That's for the 'cruel' part of Orlesian character (I guess it would be the easier part to correct in DA3...)'
Occupator form every country is cruel. That's why there is word "occupation".
Hah, Orlais concuered Fereldan but in history England occuped France.:D

FOR FERELDEN!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway if Orlais would try to take Ferelden the super-overpowered godly even Grey Warden mage the ruler of Amaranthine, slayer of thousands of dark-spawn, fear of ogres would all by him self stop the army by unleashing, fire storm, death cloud and storm of the century consecutively on top of each other to decimate the entire attacking army. Hell he will call dragons to his aid because he is so terribly powerful and beaming with magic power that they will yield to his rule.

Ferelden reminded me more of Poland than England. Maybe because I was born there.

The story of the Orlesian occupation seems to be more inspired by Edward I's occupation of Scotland than by the Hundred Years War. And given the co-existence of more or less vaguely English and Anglo-Saxon names with Scots-Gaelic ones (Alistair), in some ways Ferelden is more similar to Scotland than England.

It's a mish-mash (pastiche) really B).

That's...strange. As far as I can tell, there is nada zilch zip Polish in there. There is some German, though that may be unintended as I've read Gaider took some names etc. from roleplaying sessions that he attended.
Some of the names and terms, for instance (Landsmeet = Landtag, some of the personal names are medieval German, though most are either modern English or Anglo-Saxon and Gaelic and so on).

The landscape? Looked pretty generic and unidentifiable to me, certainly not typically English.

Yes, I support this idea very much. But only if we get to see a scene where Loghain -- if alive -- flips over a table and punches a few Orlesian Chevaliers after hearing about the impending war against Ferelden that will begin (again), and he then proceeds to grab an ebony mare and ride off to Ferelden's defense in the midnight rain.

Bonus points if he has a Stroud mustache.

It depends on where in Ferelden you are. The Frostback Mountains look like the alps, The Brecillian Forest like the Redwood National Park in western USA, the Kocari Wilds Look like German swaps and the Bannorn mainland look like inland Sweden.

In short, a mish-mash, though to be honest it nowhere felt like a properly natural landscape. Can't really connect the landscapes to real examples either. The mountains feel inspired by, well, mountains, but don't do a terribly good job of it.
But that ultimately comes down to the engine and/or the 3D artists.<_<

Uh.  No.   Occupation has nothing to do with "cruel."  The word means simply to occupy.  An occupying nation CAN be cruel, of course, but there's nothing inherent in the word as you try to claim here.  So no, that is NOT "why there is word "occupation."  Maybe try NOT to make etymology claims about a language that is clearly not your primary one?

Given Loghain would have to cross water to do that, I'd love to see him try to ride off to Ferelden's defense on nothing  but a horse, yeah.  It has the makings of a Captain Sparrow maneuver, it'd be totally epic.  :o

They can't.  Whatever's going on in Orlais, Ferelden has its own problems, what with much of its armies having been decimated by a combination of the Blight and its own civil war.  To invade Orlais right now would likely result in Orlais unifying in order to repel the Ferelden threat, and that would give Orlais a damned great excuse to re-conquer Ferelden all over again, given that they co-exist peacefully thanks to a treaty Maric signed with the Empress years ago.  To violate that treaty in a self-serving attempt would just give Orlais an awesome excuse to re-conquer Ferelden.

I don't think Alistair is that stupid, and Anora certainly is not.  It would destroy Ferelden to do something to tactically idiotic.

Hmm.  In response to another post, I guess I got it in my head from reading the Stolen Throne that Ferelden was primarily accessible from Orlais by sea.

as others have said.. it'll depend on the character and where we start. As nice as the clothing and cheese may be in Orlais, I have a feeling I'll be playing 'For Ferelden'.
I can't wait to see Bodahn and Sandal again.

actually, it was 'tea and incense'
(I'm only being picky about that since I heard the banter again last night)

Seems that Qunari/Kossith have good taste then. ;)

As for the Fereldan/Orlais thing, it depends on the situation. And I also like to rp from my characters background, so it would probably have to take a bit to make my character turn against Orlais, if that happens to be what they are...

I'd like to be a Tevinter mage that seeks to change how blood magic is seen, and abolish slavery in Tevinter though. Or atleast get some moves in against it.

Considering the beating ferelden took from the blight they probably could even beat the chasind.
