ME2 is by far and away my favourite in the series.
Then ME1
Then ME3 with its awful buckloads of auto-dialogue and attempt to define Shep.

Is it though? If a game series is touted to be about (focused on) immersive, character choice, based story. Doesn't it stand to reason that the installment with the best story is the best part of the series?

Pointless post if you do not like the discussion please feel free to leave instead of being rude with useless comments that do not contribute to the thread.

I agree with The Angry One now everything we are doing in ME3 is just random shooting at everything that move....what happened to the dialogue and possibility to persuade or intimidate enemies without having to fight. I still remember Noveria as a typical example on how a determinate mission can be achieved through different ways....where that aspect went????

I'm playing it again. Combat is actually a challenge. The story is coherent. There's neutral dialogue. The Mako is great. Exploring planets for random things is awesome. The Citadel remains the biggest and most detailed of all 3 games and that's withother hubs.
Then there's the little details. Staying on the Normandy when docking with a hub world, attempts at an almost seamless world, "XO Pressly has the deck" and so on.

Ironically Pinnacle Station (yes I bought Pinnacle Station, shut up) reminds me a LOT of ME3 multiplayer.

Don't feel bad I bought it too. BDtS was pretty good so I figured Pinnacle Station would be too. Crazy to think it was actually a preview of things to come.

ME 1 is a masterpiece as far as the atmosphere and the writing as well as the portrayal of an interesting scenario within a very well crafted universe are concerned.

ME 2 was a typical case of a successful new franchise being significantly changed to appeal to a larger mainstream, which resulted in a game that in my opinion lost much of what made the original game great.

ME 3 has numerous very well written characters and scenes, in that regard it comes close to ME 1. It is also more of an RPG again than the second part of the series.

I have a hard time believing that the quality of a story is a subjective quantity.

There are hundreds of threads like this, starting a new thread about this is pointless.

I wouldn't mind these threads so much if there was an actual discussion, not everyone just blindly agreeing with the angry one.

If someone says they prefer the ME 2 story then they prefer that story, making it subjective.

Obeded the 2nd. You disagree with the "angry one". So make a case for your position instead of telling everyone to shut up.

Story was awesome

Ish.

ability to customize

The inventory was a complete wreck, but yes, the armor and weapon customization was actually quite good.

SuperMegaWolf wrote

emphasis on exploration/discovery

Differently colored planets with differently sized mountains and random crashed probes and mummified aliens here and there, all a complete PITA to navigate in the Mako. The only really great thing about exploration in ME1 were the skyboxes.

SuperMegaWolf wrote

loot

Which is a feature that can burn in hell.

unique universe based mechanics

Now you're just making stuff up.

forced to make hard choices

Gooby pls

SuperMegaWolf wrote

hidden/integrated loading screens

Yes, that was a cool feature, but even in ME1 it was limited. They should have gone the God of War 3 route and made the whole damn game completely seamless.

SuperMegaWolf wrote

random cow-alien that robs you.

That, sir, is not a random cow-alien but the Destroyer of Worlds. The Destroyer of Worlds does not rob people, he convinces them to give him their money without them knowing it.

Bad rebuttle is bad. Support your argument from something besides the game. i.e.- Prefering one story over another has no bearing in the quality of that story. Someone may dislike spinache but their dislike doesn't mean that spinache is bad. Spinache is still good for you.

No i'm saying everyone just starts agreeing with you and it would be refreshing to see more disagree with you.

I started my new infiltrator walkthrough a couple of days ago^_^. Man, I love this game, I bought it like 4 years ago and I was so excited about it, before that I played both Kotor games and I can say that they are one of my favourite. Since, I became the big fan of ME series (maybe except ME3, though I still kinda like it)

You could hardly ask the CoD fanbase to level up their Charm or Intimidation for dialogue options.
That would distract from shooting things too much.

It's funny that you mentioned it. The first thing I did when I leveled up, I spent all 3 points on my charm.

I wish that BioWare simply fixed their game instead of what they did do. We like the Mako but the controls are weird/bad. So they scrapped it. We like to customize but the inventory was kinda cluttered. So they scrapped it. I think the only thing they did improve was combat but that didn't need improving. Sure it wasn't as seemless as most generic TPS but that's because Mass Effect wasn't a TPS.

I prefer the ME 1 story to the others, i'm saying someone could prefer the ME 2/3  story to the ME1 story, and you can't just change everyone's view.

Yes it did, combat in ME1 was a trainwreck.

When I want to play critics I prefer ME2. ME1 has a little special place in my mind though, that ME2 hasn't. It's a bit like I consider Broken Sword to be better than Loom, and I might even have more fun playing the former, but Loom is just something else.

But combat wasn't the main focus of the game. At least, not at first, it is now of course.

I prefer ME2. In my book ME1 is a 9/10 and ME2 is a 10/10. Is lack of RPG elements a bad thing? I don't think so. If anything ME2 compensated for things like less spread-sheety statistics and less exploration with things like the improved dialogue and varying planet-side missions. I hated the Mako, but it would've been fun to explore planets in the Hammerhead. That was the fun part about Overlord. Alas, "If it ain't broke and people complain about it, don't fix it, get rid of it," seems to be Bioware's motto.

I liked the Hammerhead but it was too fragile. At least the Mako could take a few hits
