Rather than going for an abstract 'what if in the future...' concept, I have a simply question.- if Mass Effect 1 was re-made with improved graphics, as well as the shooter aspects of Mass Effect 3, would you buy it? Essentially what I'm talking about is retaining the ME1 story, characters etc as well as things like the Mako, but replacing the weapons, mods, armour, and combat gameplay with that found in ME3.

Vote now.

Not a chance in hell.

I'd buy Mass Effect 3 again though if they put in the mechanics from Mass Effect 1.

Personally I enjoy the combat in Mass Effect 1 more than in 2 or 3. I liked how stats played as big a part as my ability to place a cross-hair and not once did I ever get stuck on an exposed wall in the middle of a fire-fight while trying to run to cover.

I would say yes as long as they maintain the exploration and RPG part of the original game and just improving the combat and the graphic.

No, I am fine enought with the way ME1 is that I won't spend any further money on it.

If the visuals were the *only* thing they updated, sure. However, I do much prefer ME1 overall to the other two games (clunky inventory system notwithstanding).

Revamp the gameplay and fix the frame-rate/texture pop-in and I'd buy it, sure.

Graphics enhancements would be nice, oherwise it's fine the way it is. though the Mako section of the mission to find liara could do with being shortened somewhat.

I think it would take more tweaks than that to get me to purchase it again. But that would be a huge step in the right direction for ME1 IMO. I much prefer the action gameplay in ME3.

How about they add a more expansive universe and bring back the RPG elements into ME3?!

and the levels.

The problem is that if you change the combat, you will have to change the levels.

Pre-fab side-missions not withstanding there is a distinct lack of chest-high walls thoughout the story levels of the first Mass Effect.

Graphics maybe, gameplay, hell no! In almost every way ME1's gameplay was massively superior. The only advantages I can think of to ME3's gameplay are some new power stuff, some new movement tricks and melee stuff, renegade/paragon interrupts, Shepard armor customization, and permanent weapon upgrades and more coherent licensing/fabrication system rather than pure random drops of semi-random weapon upgrade levels.

ME1 however had less cover/run issues, coherent special ammo system, a good original weapons system (before ret-conish stuff switched us over to the pseudo-ammo thermal clip system), better reasons to play soldier class, proper exploration and less linear gameplay, semi-decent vehicle sections (they could stand improvement, particularly in controls and physics engine aspects, but removing them completely is just stupid and lazy), proper conversation options (rather than auto-dialogue), familiar RPG elements (if with a somewhat wonky inventory system, removing the system wasn't the answer, proper armor and omni-tool choices for squadmates (rather than just appearance from ME2 and minor changes in ME3, both with very limited choices) at least one mission with special non-lethal takedown grenades able to be used, a leveling and skills/powers system I like somewhat better in most respects, a proper crouching system, more UI feedback for monitoring accuracy, allowing players the ability to follow a medium between constant hacking mini-games and slapping on omni-gel (rather than forced hacking mini-games in 2, and complete lack in 3), and as bad as the resource gathering and planet exploring could be at times in 1, it was _way_ better than planet scanning in 2, or dull little fetch-missions of 3.

With the driving sections and massive improvements to the repetative landscape, I would play a hybrid. All the abilities, choices and freedom in ME1, with the sleek look and feel of ME3.

No. The graphics could use some touching up, and some areas could be remastered (like Halo 1 was for the 360 re-release). They could also keep the inventory system out and use all the same weapons + mod system as ME3. Other than that, using ME3's combat would necessitate changing the story missions and UNC planets too much.

I like ME gameplay a lot more than ME3, and I don't agree that ME3 has better graphics (atleast on PC).

So my answer is quite obvious...

Well, sorry, but that's not exactly a matter of opinion. ME3 models either have more detail or less detail in ME1, and it's fairly obvious that it's the former.

As for the mechanics, I do prefer a more skill-oriented system rather than the stats-based ME1. But how about a Fallout 3/VATs style compromise?

Having said that, the operative clause is

right now

and right now I wouldn't buy anything from Bioware. It's a simple issue of trust - you buy games essentially unseen; you have to trust that interviews, promotional gameplay videos and the demo (if there is one) are a realistic reflection of the game (rather than e.g. being cut content*). Bioware has demonstrated that they cannot be trusted. Therefore, I cannot justify buying their games any more.

How would it necessitate changing the maps 'too much'?

yes no question, I have been secretly hoping for this.  Although in the interest of continuity, ME2 gameplay would be ok too

In the technical viewpoint, it does have better graphics, but you might not PREFER them over ME1.

Actually, they should have just put it into a Mass Effect 2 engine. ME2 is better than ME3, there was no need to go to a new engine. Everything looks wrong in ME3. Faces just aren't right. They dropped the ball.

Well yeah, but level design needs to be fixed.

That is the major issue with ME1 AND ME3.
