Yes, combat in ME1 was pretty awful. The things that sucked, sucked hard and the things that were powerful were overpowered. There was no real balance.

If they actually fix things with ME3, I would have no qualms over a 10-Year-Anniversary Trilogy Box Set with all the games and their respective DLC on disk as well as ME1 getting ME2 or ME3 Graphics and Gameplay but no Plot Changes. Weather the combat would be the same as ME1 or ME3 would be optional.

I very much like ME 1 the way it is. It's the other games that need improvement

I like the mechanics of inventory management and moding of weapons way more in ME1 then in 2 or 3.

The only thing that I would like form ME3 is movement animation and dodge and some biotic powers.

Oh dear god no, please no.

The movement animations in ME3 are terrible, running especially makes the Shepards look like a hunchback gorrilla.

That's a no-brainer. Hell yes. I would prefer a whole new entry in the franchise before an ME1 remake, but I would play it.  Just bring back crouching and proper exploration mechanics.

As other people have said, I don't think that forcing the game to play exactly like ME3 would work.

However, I wouldn't mind seeing a version of the original with many of the improved combat features like ducking into cover, grabs, cover slips, rolling, and a better control scheme (separate melee button, directing squad members individually, more power buttons for consoles). It would take a LOT of work to make ME's combat good, but not as much (but probably still a lot) to make playing through enjoyable enough.

It makes me sad that when I do a complete trilogy play through, my goal is to get through ME1 as fast as possible so that I can get to the fun parts. ME1's combat has not aged very well at all.

Thread needs to be changed - would you buy ME2 and ME3 again if they were more like ME1?
A - Yes

I for one love mass effect 1, the way you do next to everything in real time, like goin up and down an elevator, i know i know some of you will hate that but thats the little things that make an rpg game an rpg game, you are role playing which means you really want your guy to be as realistic as possible, unlike ME3 and ME2 i do not go into an elevator and end up at the top or bottom after a loading screen.

ME1 inventory also fine, yes the guns could do with some visual remodels so that they look different more or less, but if you do not like the inventory and scrolling through heaps of items, you are probably playing the wrong type of game.

Mass Effect trilogy - started with an RPG ended in a third person shooter.

ME1 makes those elevator rides possible by putting everything interesing in the Citadel within a few hundred feet of everything else, in a station bigger than New York.  It's OK to say you like this better, but calling it realistic is idiotic.

If you care about inventory management more than combat, I think YOU are playing the wrong game.

I always found the cover system in ME1 to be very clunky and hard to use, It'd be great to be running on the same graphics engine too since the textures always took a little longer to load up.

I'd buy a ME1 remake with all that fancy planet exploration, vehicle driving and outdoor fighting...

Not a chance in hell.

I'd buy Mass Effect 3 again though if they put in the mechanics from Mass Effect 1.

Personally I enjoy the combat in Mass Effect 1 more than in 2 or 3. I liked how stats played as big a part as my ability to place a cross-hair and not once did I ever get stuck on an exposed wall in the middle of a fire-fight while trying to run to cover.

Pretty much this ^_^

I'd have to disagree on a few things here. For one, after so much time the combat has become outdated, archaic, and generally not fun. Heck, even going from ME2 back to ME1 can be jarring, and can generally be a frustrating experience. ME1's combat gameplay has NOT aged well and would benefit from a modern update. The Mako sections would also benefit since it handles like crap on the XB360 (I'm not PC gamer so I could care less about that version).

In Mass Effect 1 when entering combat I quickly take cover and fire at one enemy. I use Lift on the next and then Throw on another before spinning around and using singularity. Between each use of power my weapon has cooled down for me to keep firing. Special ammo and upgrades were set before entering the fight.

In Mass Effect 2/3 when entering combat I quickly enter cover (providing I don't accidentally leap over it thanks to the Awesome button) and then apply an ammo power (providing I have taken one as my bonus). Now I shoot at an enemy and use Pull. Now I have to wait a second and then I can use Throw. Then I wait another second and use Singularity. Between each use of power I must reload my weapon (providing I have thermal clips available) in order to keep shooting.

Now call me silly but I'd say that the first example gives a quicker and smoother combat experience than the next.

How could they make you care less about the PC version if you aren't a PC gamer?

hell yeah. the clunky animations and awful shooting mechanics make ME1 hard to play, the story is still worth seeing. im a much bigger fan of ME2/3 tighter environments with high polish but just getting ME1s oen spaces with guns i can aim wud be huge improvement

all the nonsense about role playing in elevators is absurd. thats not realism, its called covering a load screen and it was boring but even worse if u got lost on the citadel

Yes I would. Currently replaying mass effect 1 and it was such a learing curve to get get back to the old combat system but some things I do like about the old game that I wish were in ME3. Individual power cooldowns, this was a life save in pinnical station, radiation ammo that was the s**t in ME1 not only did  kill your target but they turned into green goo.

Are you acknowledging that there are things in the sequels that you liked?

What would make me purchase ME1 again is if:
1. HD version for the consoles.
2. Better sniper rifle action. I loved sniping in ME2 and 3, but in ME1 it sucked. It really really sucked.
3. Kaidan male-mance fully put back in. It's already mostly there. It shouldn't take much effort. And, thanks to the BW folks, all the tags for a continued romance for MShep/Kaidan are already in ME2 and 3.

Yes, change the copy paste guns, the copy paste planets, and the copy paste level designs while were at it.

Let's make ME1 prefect instead of just good.

ME1 with ME3 gameplay would be better than ME1 with ME1 gameplay, but I don't think I'd buy the same game again just for updated gameplay.

Updated graphics, updated gameplay, throw in some missing/unused music tracks, plus some extra goodies for good measure and it's an idea I hope Bioware considers. The dialogue has already been recorded so there shouldn't be any extra costs in that department.

basically this.  I'm pretty much done playing ME1 at this point anyway, making the combat better (as someone else said its dated and just not fun at this point) wouldn't make me anymore likely to play it again.
