Do you suppose the VAs still have to audition for Bioware if they've already had a major part?

Was thinking less 'return characters' (like if, say, Cullen made an appearance they'd use Greg Ellis if he were available) and more 'brand new character but with a previously established VA' like Mark Meers, Adam Howden or Susan Boyd. Like if they wanted Meer to come back and voice the main character from DA3?

I'm not sure how the audition process works but surely if they've already proven themselves to be versatile and reliable, they shouldn't need to audition again? Or do you think they need to prove their right for that particular role?

Question was mainly prompted about reading some VAs commenting about auditioning for other stuff on Twitter and I wondered if they say 'Yay there's going to be a DA3, I'm a total shoe-in for that!!' or if it's just considered as difficult a job to get as any other despite having worked for them in the past?

Yeah clearly I know nothing about acting. :pinched:

Maybe they still have to give the lines a read to see if they're right for the role? It would make sense.

I don't know if we'll be getting any repeats for major roles, though. Once players associate a voice with a character, hearing it from a different character would be weird.

Maybe but if you look at some of the DA2 VAs they did work on DA too...obviously just as small parts but there all the same...

Yeah, there are lots and lots of repeats between the two games, but I agree with berelinde that it's probably less likely that a major character's VA would  voice another major character in the next game. Like, I doubt the new male PC will be voiced by Gideon Emery, altho BW has also been known to shake things up (see: Anders). Of course, m!Hawke's VA was also in DA:O... e.g. laughed when I watched this again the other day. So, I could see it being possible that we've already "heard" the new PC's VA in one of the other games. I have no idea what the audition processes are like, tho.

That is so weird! And weird that I find it weird, actually, because I've seen mHawke's of all shapes and sizes in DAII - it's just strange to hear that VA in DA:O.

And poor Cullen. LOL!

The annoyingly vague but accurate answer is: it depends. Sometimes producers have actors in mind for roles and they will just be asked to do it straight away (as long as they have a good reputation/history with the company). This is not at all unusual for a production company big enough to take their pick of actors. Auditions just for the sake of them even though you know exactly who you want for a role would just be a waste of everyone's time.

For returning characters I would have expected the old VA's to get first dibs on the role, but DA2 has messed around with those expectations already, so who knows what happened there?

You know, that's the funny thing. Just about any fem!Hawke I've had, I never paid any attention to the voice. It was just there. With male!Hawke, it really takes me a while to get used to the voice coming from a different Hawke. No idea why that would be.

I wonder who they'll get for the protag in the next thing.

I actually totally see this. I wonder if it's why all my male Hawkes sort of look the same? My female Hawkes generally look pretty different but the males generally have the same bone structure etc. Maybe I'm too set in my ways in terms of what his voice comes out of. :pinched:

They approach some VAs to reprise roles. They make specific requests for some for different roles. Others respond to casting calls.

Usually, this happens through agents (including casting calls with the exception of extras).

In all cases, they negotiate contracts that ultimately decide who works and in what manner.
