Attack Rating Confusion

Hi all,

I'm trying to understand and verify the exact formula used to calulcate the attack rating. On the Wiki it says:

AttackValue = 61 + 0.5 * {(Strength - 10) + (Dexterity - 10)} + AttackBonuses

I assume that Cunning has no impact on attack rating even with Lethality, correct?

The in games hints for attributes indicates that only Dex contributes to attack for range weapons. So what is the formula then? Simply the following?

AttackValue = 61 + 0.5 * (Dexterity - 10) + AttackBonuses

I'm trying to verify these in my current game on Leliana who is Lvl 9 and has the following attributes:

Str 18
Dex 28 (27 + 1)

She also has Expert Combat Training which should give +2 attack.

When equipped with an enchanted dagger which has an attack bonus of +4 I would then expect an attack rating of

61 + 0.5 * (8 + 18) + (2 + 4) = 80

But on the character record page it states 74 (68 + 6).

When equipped with a short bow with no attack modified I would expect

61 + 0.5 * 18 + 2 = 72

But the character record shows 70 (68 + 2).

What am I missing here?

I'm using the 1.05 version of the game.

Attack rating is determined by strength and dexterity. 2 str/dex=1 attack.

Lethality only affects damage, not attack.

Also, don't forget stat boosts from specializations, like assassin and duelist, which both add +2 dexterity, and duelist gives +1 attack.

Is this true also for ranged attacks? That contradicts the information in the in-game tooltips for the attributes.

Right, but the Dex boost would show up on the character record right?

Is it really +1 attack for Duelist? I thought it was +1 damage.

At any rate, Leliana in my game is only bard so far.  So I'm still missing +2 attack with the bow and +6 attack with the dagger.

Correct. Lethality only affects the damage modifier and not the attack rating. Even with Lethality, strength will add to physical resistance, be a prerequisite for certain weapons and armor, and affect melee attack.

The in games hints for attributes indicates that only Dex contributes to attack for range weapons.

That is correct. Dexterity is the only attribute that affects ranged attack. And you’re also correct that items which give bonuses to attack should give that bonus when they are equipped. It’s a straight bonus to attack.

Duelist does add +1 damage. But it also adds +2 Dexterity, which amounts to +1 attack in ranged and melee.

Str 18
Dex 28 (27 + 1)

When equipped with an enchanted dagger which has an attack bonus of +4 I would then expect an attack rating of

61 + 0.5 * (8 + 18) + (2 + 4) = 80

Your math is correct, by the logic of the Dragon Age Wiki,

However, I did some searching and found this from the Dragon Age Toolset Wiki. It draws all its information from the game’s scripts.

Apparently, the Dragon Age Wiki has made a mistake. The base number for the attack rating is (or could be) 54 and not 61 as stated. Assuming it's correct, that partly explains why your attack rating is less than you would expect going by the Dragon Age Wiki’s math.

But...that means the equation for melee would be: 54 + 13 + 6 = 73, which is 1 less than the number you're seeing. It would seem you're getting another +1 attack from somewhere. Perhaps from another piece of equipment, a specialization, or a spell or talent boost? And with range attack, the equation would be: 54 + 9 + 2 = 65, which is 5 less than the number you're seeing.

Are you seeing any discrepancies with the attack ratings of your other companions or your Warden, or is it just Leliana?

When looking over the class descriptions on the Wiki I see something called "Base Attack" which is 55 for rogue and 60 for Warrior. Perhaps it is this that should be used instead of 61 or 54? See dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Rogue_(Origins)

Regarding the bonus from Combat Training I think that I probably misinterpreted this. It says Expert level gives +2 attack and Master gives +4. This is probably cumulative, which means it would be +6 in total.

I have now progressed in the game and forgot to save at the point I described above. But I have gone over the current stats for all characters and for melee, for Alistair, Leliana, Zevran, Sten and Shale the given rating matches exactly the calculations under the assumptions I'm giving above. For the PC otoh the actual rating is +5. So I'm assuming the PC gets some bonus from somewhere. Will try to verify this from an earlier save.

For ranged though, it doesnt match up at all:

PC: +6
Alistair: +13
Leliana: +5
Zevran: +5

That is the actual rating compared with calculated. Alistair is equipped with a crossbow, the PC shortbow, Leliana and Zevran longbow.

Oh, yes, that's right! I forgot that each class has an individual base attack, with the Warrior's being 60, the Rogue's 55, and the Mage's 50. Yes, those are the numbers you should use instead of 61 or 54. Good catch.

As for that extra +5 bonus for the PC, I think it depends on the difficulty of the game. There's an attack bonus of +20 on casual and, although the wiki doesn't say so, I believe there is a +5 on normal. But I thought a bonus like that applied to the entire party, not just the PC.
