Things DA2 did right:
- Improving talents: (Meaning the ability to make your fireball have a larger radius etc.) Big thumbs up here.
- Increasing mage auto attack DPS: Again, nothing bad to say, early level mage combat in DAO sucked because once your spells were on cooldown you were basically useless.
- Making your weapon class less important: In DAO the most important talents came from your spec/weapon class, the generic ones generally weren't as important. Trees like Vanguard which are available regardless of weapon class were a big step up, letting your S+S W focus more on DPS etc.
- Multiple companion quests: I liked this, I liked the DAO companion quests for sure, but I wanted more of them. DA2 delivers in that regard.
Things they were on the right lines with:
- Time progression: It was a good idea to let you see what happened a couple of years later, but was poorly implemented. Have people change their position and status over time (the bloke who never gets in to see the Viscount etc.) and be able to talk to your companions about what they did during the interval.
- Speeding up combat: Combat could do with a 20-25% or so increase in speed from DAO and could do with feeling a little more fluid. That does not mean the animations suddenly become ridiculous, or that you can do away with the tactical camera and pause and play style of gameplay. I play mostly in real time, but I still liked to pause at the start of the fight and use the tactical camera to get an overview. It was a really nice feature, which I hope returns.
There are no doubt other improvements I can't think of off the top of my head.
Agree with all of these things (espeically multiple companon quests), and would also like to add:
Friendship/Rivalry SystemIt felt like a real improvement over the "we can't be friends unless you agree with me about everything" model. I still found myself metagaming a little to lock character's loyalty, but far less so than the "I'm about to do something Morrigan wouldn't approve of so let's just switch her out of the party for a moment" model I found myself using sometimes in DA:O. Also, the reactive gifting system was wonderful. The first time I gave Fenris a book and he rounded on me...it blindsided me in a really excellent way. Still needs a little tinkering in that you can now lock in a character's friendship and then do some really terrible things in front of them with no affect, but it's a big improvement and I really hope it stays.
Player-sexual Romances
No reason not to have them, and it's absolutely wonderful. I can play the game the way I want - I can play F!Hawke and romance Merrill if I want, but she's not locked out of romancing any players who want to do a M!Hawke run with her either. Awesome.
Also:
- Iconic Armour
- Voiced Protagonist and more importantly, the focus on
tone as well as actions (I've just started another DA:O run and I'm actually really missing this.)
- Combat pace
- I agree with Saberchic in that I liked having Hawke interject in banter sometimes. Often in DA:O the companions talked like the Warden wasn't even in the room, which was a little odd.
