... unless you've already passed the test and didn't notice. Go talk to Hlam and see if you can tell him Khelgar passed the trial.
Also - what are the conversation options with Khelgar that ARE presented?

This is literally what happens when I talk to Khelgar:
Me: I wanted to ask you about some of your companions.
Khelgar: Eh? Like who?
Me (dialogue options): 1. Never mind. I had other questions for you. 2. We've spoken enough, let's move on.
So yeah I'm having pretty much the same problem as the person in that link, as well as this person - my influence with Khelgar is 12, so enough to pass the check, if it showed up. I have also tried talking to Khelgar with and without Neeshka and Elanee and the dialogue still won't come up.

As I recall, when you first talk to Hlam and get the Trial, one or two conversation options open up. One I'll call Square 1 should appear for everyone. The one you're quoting I'll call Square 2; that one also appears if your influence with Khelgar is high enough. Since you tried Square 2 and failed, you might go back to Square 1 to re-enable it. It's a different line of questioning that goes something like - Player "There are good and bad elves" - Khelgar "You're talking in circles. It makes no sense." - Player "Will you let me prove it to you in our travels?" - Khelgar (suddenly sporting a trim goatee and arching his eyebrow) "I will consider it."
Or maybe I'm off and that's just the conversation line you get from I wanted to ask you about some of your companions if your influence is low.
I can't tell since you didn't say what conversation options you actually have - not just the one that doesn't work, all of them.

This person - LittleBlueMan - points to something you can try if I'm off and there's no Square 1 to get you back on track:
"used the console to max my influence and the result was the same. When i decreased my influence to 6 i got the influence fail again"
If I'm reading that right, he got the influence check to come up again by lowering his influence. You could try lowering your influence* to under 7 and see if I wanted to ask you about some of your companions reappears - but don't use it then, not until you've returned your influence to 12 so as not to fail again. (Even if you reset your influence back to 12 you might still have to wait until you gain another point of influence with Khelgar in the game before trying.**)

In your saved game folder there is a file called globals.xml. Back this up. You can now edit it with an xml editor or just use wordpad but be careful not to mess with any of the formatting.
Find 10_nkhelgarvqstate and raise it 1 point. Specifically, it should equal the number of trials Khelgar has passed (including this one), so it should be 1, 2, or 3.
Find nkhelgareven and set it to 1.
That's what passing the check does. Save your changes and that should let you report to Hlam that Khelgar has met the test. Also, make sure 10bKhelEvenQuest_TurnedIn is 0 (or not there at all).
.................
Looking at that some more, you said:

The Never mind ... option appearing under the You don't like ... or You seem more ... branches in neither case does [END DIALOG]. The dialog may just be hung up waiting for you to finish. Before resorting to any of that editing, try the dialog in-game again and be sure to click the We've spoken enough... option. This would seem to comport with the first GameBanshee poster above who suddenly just got it to work and didn't know why. You might also try clicking through some of the other chats such as "tell me about yourself" to reset the thing.

1. Who are you again?
2. Why are you so eager to fight?
3. Tell me a little about yourself.
4. I need to know more about you if you're going to travel with me.
5. How did the meeting with monks go?
6. I wanted to talk to you about becoming a monk.
7. I wanted to ask you about some of our companions.
8. Never mind, let's keep moving.
I did notice yesterday that sometimes, some of the dialogue points disappear. They later re-appear. At no point do the companion options return.
Just clicked through all the chats, and selected We've spoken enough, but nothing happened, except for some of the main dialogue points disappearing again. I might try editing globals.xml at some point, at least there will be a way to get around this bug!
Another thing - I recently installed all the expansions and fully updated the game, like LittleBlueMan, and I've heard that MotB/the patches were a bit buggy, perhaps the issue could be related to this? I haven't really encountered any other bugs so I'm not so sure.

Hm, just looked at globals.xml, and nkhelgareven is not there at all. Made a separate save, followed the pattern of the other Khelgar trial codes and added it in to the latest actions, as well as changing 10_nkhelgarvqstate, and was able to resolve the quest as if I had just asked about companions. Still no idea what could have caused the dialogue to disappear, but at least there is a workaround. Thanks for your help, I_Raps!
I too wanted to thank you, Raps. You too, Sympathy.
I had the exact same issue, and your solution worked. I have no idea how nkhelgareven disappeared, but I did get to turn in the quest!
