Today shotguns do what snipers cant. Very effective close and at distance. Do not suffer shield gate problem. Do not have hipfire penalty. So the fact is... beast is not even close the correct word.
If you play SI and QMI it is viable, but it is helped by the class.

Don't the M-98 and black widow have some shield gate advantages still? Not sure. But what I really like is the armor pen. On most maps I don't bother going around to reach an enemy under cover...I put a bullet through his head after going through cover. Much easier with a black widow than a shotgun. Like on FB Hydra, the objective to kill persons of interest does not require me to leave the LZ cover from most anywhere on the map. Especially that back room. Shield gate is not the only issue. Natural armor pen without a buff is very nice if you know how to use it; add the buff and it is insane. Add armor pen ammo and it is funny as hell. Add a male quarian tac scan for the frosting on the cake.

No, unfortunately they don't, and I don't think they ever have. The BW has a shield gate "advantage" in the sense that it has a 3-shot magazine, but that's it..458 wrote...

This is exactly right. It's the same as if you had shot 8 rounds from a rapid-fire weapon at once. Shotguns don't actually "ignore" shield gate - one of the pellets (the one that breaks the shield gate) will not do full damage because of the shield gate.Furian USN wrote...
Also: what lets shot guns ignore shield gate? I assume it is because the pellets all hit but calculate damage seperately.. so you actually hit it really fast in a row, thus damaging past the shield gate, not really ignoring it.
What im worried about is that shield gate may be a trait intrisic to the enemies and it may be very difficult or impossible to allow only certain things to bypass the gate without having a fast-damaging effect. (like shot gun pellets)
I may be entirely wrong - just trying to get this sorted to come up with some suggestions we could actually see.
So far im thinking faster reload and higher damage is what we would get.

Without shield gate mess, I think, maybe, a "fast fix" could be very fast reload times and a damage buff to one bullet snipers. So you can deal more shots and if miss, it wont be a huge problem.
But Javelin needs to be more lighter.

lol lets make the Javelin, an anti-material sniper rifle that can shoot through a vault door like a hot knife through butter! Oh wait, balance! So now lets give enemies with shields shield gate protection!
Now a centurion or Marauder can survive a direct shot! lol, balance.
Single-shot sniper rifles should have some innate ability to ignore shield-gate. Right now they're a joke.

What I used to use on Gold---> SI with Widow/ SE with Carnifex/ Batarian Soldier with Graal/GE with GPS.
What I use now---> N7 Destroyer with Revenant and Piranha/N7 Paladin with Disciple and Carnifex/GE with GPS.
Shotguns, Pistols, and fast firing Assault Rifles really seem to be the only really useful weapons anymore...

Please, just one totally legit sniper to use. I'm getting tired of bouncing back and forth between my Widow (and hitting the Gate like a brick wall) and my Kishock (which suffers the myriad quirks of projectile weapons).
