I think the best possible story is to play as a new wardend charged with finding the warden comander and hawke. this allows the game to take place over all the map and being a warden gives you that specail athority option. it would make the story about finding the compaions of both hawke and the warden comander. all wail the mage templar war is rageing around you. this also fits into gathering compaions of your own some even former compaions of the warden and hawke that ask to join the new warden. it as a story point allows for the first two stories to be told to new players to the DA franchise aswel as tieing in both save game stories arching over from DAO and DA2 so your actions from both games are carried over to the new but seen from a new point of veiw.
or you could be a fereldon agent tasked with finding them never really liked the wardens manner there are limits to how much anyone should sacrifise
The Wardens seem to share a lot of the same code and ideals as the watch (Black Brothers, whatever you want to call them) from A Game of Thrones, but the watch is a little more hardcore in their rules. I wonder if Dragon Age took any inspiration from that series?
I agree that what they expect of Wardens is extreme, but it is a group of people from all walks of life, killers and kings. When you join, it's a clean slate, you give up who you were, good or bad, and devote yourself to the cause of stopping the Darkspawn and the next Blight. They are the only ones who can do the job, so it is a necessary sacrifice.
The reason he went with another Warden is that the Wardens have a lot of authority over the majority of the nations of Thedas and we saw them sneeking through Kirkwall ath the end of the second game; an agent of Ferelden wouldn't have that much say in Orlais. He/she would have to rely on subterfuge and anyone who sympathizes with Ferelden within Orlais; which could make for an interesting game, or a real hassle.
