personally I'm much rather play a seeker under the command of Cassandra searching for Hawke and the Warden since as DA2 and Dawn of The Seeker cover this
I'd rather also take the role of some third-party character, but have both the Warden and Hawke involved and ina major way, not like Leliana or Alistair were "Involved" in DA2. Particularly the Warden, wha happened to him as a result of certain decisions has left many interesting questions.
It's the characters that matter in BioWare games, not the setting or the story, that's not the strongest point, for storyline or setting and immersion you should play Deus Ex: HR or Witcher 2. As long as the characters are both good AND involving (and not just have an interesting personality matrix, but not giving the player an ability to get involved with it, like in DA2), DA3 will be a good game. And well, obviously no copy-pasting.
Just bring the old characters back, and do what you do best, BioWare, not need to try to make it "Extra-flashy, less brains invloved", we got Call of Duty to do this.
That said, Darksiders 2/Kindoms of Amaleur: Reckinging combat would certainly be a great benefit for the game. For both Origins and DA2, I had to install the "Skip combat mod", cuz I didn't want to fall asleep while playing a videogame.
