The game hardly introduces anything original. The game engine is the same engine used in previous Bioware titles. Solid engine, but nothing new.
The story? It does seem they did spend a great deal of time writing the story, however I see way too much Lord of the Rings in the game, plus they threw in werewolves for good measure. I wonder why no vampires? That probably will be a DLC
I do understand this game is basically Dungeons and Dragons and not meant to be a real time combat game, but come on. Not everyone wants to be a mage. Not counting specializations like assassin, templar, shapeshifter, etc:
Number of activated battle options (spells) for mages: 53
Number of activated battle actions( talents) for rogues: 17 I'm including stealth and lockpicking Number of activated battle actions (talents) for warriors: 23
Of course, the mage can become an arcane warrior and use armors and weapons, but rogues and warriors cannot use magic.
Cooldown timers on physical actions make no sense. Take the rogue's "below the belt" attack. It is a kick. Why do I have to wait 20 secs to kick again?
Why can't I engage anyone I want in battle? I have to wait until the game tells me it is OK to attack someone, even if I know they are going to attack me. And there are many occasions I cannot place my party the way I want to, because I need to talk to the enemy first, and after the cut scene, my party is bunched up again behind me.
And why can't I disengage combat? Maybe I want to run to a spot that is more to my advantage, rather than trot hunchbacked while everything and everyone is hitting me, because as you know, there is no way your character can dodge anything.
There are some other issues with general gameplay that I found annoying...
I don't like the idea of being "herded" through a static environment. I prefer open worlds where I can run from one place to the other, and not be confined to "travel", where I can bump into things and things fall, where doors are not transparent and projectiles go through them, where I can fall off cliffs or push enemies off cliffs.
I don't know if these are bugs in the game or it is just the way the logic of the quest was programmed, but some quests need to be followed in a very specific pattern, otherwise they will fail.
Like the last quest of the Irregulars and Of Noble Birth. The latter, btw, I failed the first time. I reloaded a previous save, got the right dialog, and still the mission failed. I tried this 2-3 times, same thing.
There's also the issue of the DLCs. There's no reason 2 DLCs should've been out the same day the game was released other than basically charge 80 dlls for the game. That sucky Dragon armor, Warden's Keep, and the golem quest, should have been included in the game to begin with.
I knew the game was more of a D&D game rather than real-time when I bought it, but I thought, since Bioware was releasing a construction set, that I could change the game more to my liking. But that construction set, well, after using Bethesda's construction sets for Oblivion and Fallout, the Bioware contruction set is a mess. Part of it is that a database is used, but nevertheless...
